There once was a girl called Elsa
who was given a balloon for her birthday
It all went so swell
Then Elsa went and
let it go .let it go, let it go
Ilene went for her morning walk
She saw some friends and stopped to talk
The rain fell down
And soaked her gown
And everyone else stopped to gawk
Elsa, My Brown Eyed Granddaughter
by Edmund Siejka
Even when you were a little child
Your watchful eyes
Saw everything
Missed nothing
Your baby laugh was infectious
And rightfully so
Because you were the brown eyed Princess
In your mother’s heart.
Years later
On one Spring day
On a wide field
Boys lined up for soccer
Accompanied by their Dads
Tattooed men, baseball caps and beer bellies
When some one in the back said
“Y’know the government says they gotta let the girls play.
Ain’t that something?”
The question hung in the air
Unanswered.
You bit your lower lip
And we were afraid that you would get hurt or wouldn’t be able to compete.
Against the boys who were heavier and taller
But we were surprised
The look of determination on your face was that of Wonder Woman
Racing onto the field never looking back
You were running against the wind
Bypassing the bullies
Pushing them out of the way
And scoring two goals.
After the game
The coach came up,
Clip board in hand,
Looked down on you and asked
“Whaddy say your name is again?”
You told him your name and he shook his head
Saying to everyone and to no one in particular
“She’s really good. She’s better than the guys on the team.”
When we got home you did somersaults and back flips
And I cautioned
“Be careful Elsa, be careful”
And your response was the same
“I’m always careful Grandpa.”
With your determination and tenacity
You can become anything you want
And if you should find your dreams
Blocked by a closed door
Summon your true spirit
And kick the door wide open
For you are Elsa.
Elsa was a tall lovely Swede
Cross-eyed and knock-kneed
Million-dollar smile all agreed
Flashing her favorite dress made of tweed
A chain at her neck with a simple bead
Loving kindness was her creed
Drenched in thoughtfulness her every deed
The biggest heart kind to any breed
Elsa couldn’t stand to see any creature bleed
Cautious steps not to crush spider or centipede
When Elsa’s turn was up for vacation, no need to plead
She chose her dream destination easily indeed
All wished Elsa a heartfelt Godspeed
And off went Elsa to visit the Calgary stampede
She was impressed with how it was refereed
And how the bulls got their revenge with speed
As it was humans who most needed to heed
Elsa would be back it was guaranteed

Lost silver’s feral
As it swirls aqua ~
Elemental chance
looms on fins primal
Sated or not, swims
and grins......eureka!

When we leave the house this morning,
into the half light of the early dawn
from home’s warmth to cheek-slapping cold,
high in the western sky the bright New Moon
hangs like a silver penny there
innocently watching over the grey
mist shrouded secrets of the river.
We follow the path down to the water’s edge,
as the ducks shout out their clam’rous challenge
see the moon now greet the dawning eastern light
caught like a paper lantern in the branches
of skeleton trees while, shining from the bridge,
lights of gold and silver, like jewelled pearls
linger in reflection and await the rising sun.

His parents’ assignment of his gender left him cold
Inside he was Elan, not Elsa, but how dare he tell them?
Their approval meant everything; so he kept his secrets.
Making him icy, frosty, showing him a wind chill of two below.
Others wondered why Elsa was not lively and happy like her sister.
He could not explain it, because it was not “done” in their land.
A “they” was not accepted, he wondered if he was the first they actually.
No one had spoken of the possibility and yet here he was.
Frightened to show his true colors, afraid to share his gifts.
Everything he touched turned brittle, icy, cold, dead frozen.
People shunned him, which was okay. He shut himself away.
Feared their reactions if they discovered what he knew.
I am a man! Elsa said into the mirror. Why do they not know?
He tore up his gowns, turning them into britches and blouses.
The mirror smiled. Congratulations she said. You are now finally you.
He looked out the window staring into the blue snow shadows.
Would they receive him in a kind and loving way? Or would they banish him?
The mirror showed him a self-confident lad, one who knew himself well.
He put his shoulders back and walked outside where Anna was waiting.
You are so handsome! She said, embracing her brother.
Thank God you are finally you!
