Elsa To Elan Now a They

His parents’ assignment of his gender left him cold
Inside he was Elan, not Elsa, but how dare he tell them?
Their approval meant everything; so he kept his secrets.
Making him icy, frosty, showing him a wind chill of two below.

Others wondered why Elsa was not lively and happy like her sister.
He could not explain it, because it was not “done” in their land.
A “they” was not accepted, he wondered if he was the first they actually.
No one had spoken of the possibility and yet here he was.

Frightened to show his true colors, afraid to share his gifts.
Everything he touched turned brittle, icy, cold, dead frozen.
People shunned him, which was okay. He shut himself away.
Feared their reactions if they discovered what he knew.

I am a man! Elsa said into the mirror. Why do they not know?
He tore up his gowns, turning them into britches and blouses.
The mirror smiled. Congratulations she said. You are now finally you.
He looked out the window staring into the blue snow shadows.

Would they receive him in a kind and loving way? Or would they banish him?
The mirror showed him a self-confident lad, one who knew himself well.
He put his shoulders back and walked outside where Anna was waiting.
You are so handsome! She said, embracing her brother.
Thank God you are finally you!
