Best Animal Nature Poems
walking gracefully
with a pendulum movement ~
a herd of giraffes
the mass migration
crocodiles at the river~
food for the taking
gazelles are running
a hungry cheetah gives chase~
speed is the winner
a lone male lion
approaches a sleeping pride~
the battle begins
an elephant herd
arrive at the water hole~
use trunks to cool down
a swarm of locusts
devouring vegetation~
skeletal branches
army on the move
soldier ant battalion~
have left a scorched earth
vultures in the trees
animals weakened by thirst~
death is imminent
a downed buffalo
lions watch as herd returns~
bulls scatter the pride
basking in cool mud
the african river horse~
hippopotamus
laughing hyenas
find an unguarded carcass~
scavengers feasting
at the water hole
animals quenching their thirst~
alert for danger
a crash of rhino
hunted for their ivory~
extinction looming
a small antelope
found on the African plains~
cute looking dik dik
the baobab tree
silhouetted at sunset~

In the winter
it is more difficult
¤ ¤
to be animals in the forest
When the thermometer
creeps below zero )
and no food to be found
)
But all animals
have their solutions )
about how to
get through )
the cold season
It is most critical )
for small bodies
Through millions of years )
the mice go to sleep from October
They know that ... )
cold means life or death )))

Creatures of feathers, fur and fins
gather ‘round to touch her heart.
Somehow their instincts assure them
she will strive to offer protection.
Wee winged one that fell from its nest
she cradles in loving hands,
feeding and nursing
till it can soar through life on its own.
Abandoned kittens and pups
find a temporary home with her,
until she can place them
with loving souls who nurture.
Baby dolphin stranded on a beach
receives prompt attention,
when she carries it
to those with healing talents.
Rewards are rightfully reaped
as she hears birds singing,
feels love in a kitten’s purr,
finds joy watching dolphins play.
Each act of kindness is repaid
a hundred times and more.
Leaving gentle impressions of hope,
one life to another..

Look at that sun shining so bright,
I had such a good rest last night,
I do so much, just love this tree,
this is the best bed I’ve ever seen.
Old oak, old oak, my gentle friend,
I must go now and attend
to foraging treasures for my winter’s nest,
I’ll stage my very own, winter-fest.
Inviting friends to my lovely new tree,
we’ll dine on acorns, walnuts, chickpeas.
Perhaps we’ll have dried apples too,
there’s such a mighty harvest of foods.
Then we’ll bed down, in slumber deep,
in snugly warmth, this tree, we’ll keep.

- I wish my name was Jane ... and had a pretty
swimsuit ... (Tarzan yell) - quote by poet
The jungle waited with deep bated breath
silence broken by a pack of howler monkeys
In truth the jungle is never quiet
Morning sun shines through the leaves of the trees
the air is filled with birdsong
A sleepy sloth with movements
as a slow motion movie
Everyday routines for an effective new day
Further into the jungle a predator stirs
Muscles undulate under rosette-dotted fur
A slender muscular jaguar moves gracefully
First mission of the day with deadly grace
The strongest will survive
the law of the jungle
It rumbles in the treetops
elephants wander through dense foliage
waving their huge ears- no trumpet sound
Enigmatic giants in silent march
The jungle changes at sunset
don't dare stay here at night
Remnants owlish wisdom wafts through nighttime’s purple sky.
Fox settles down with her kits, against a nurturing oak stump.
Meadow and forest perform their nightly slumbering rituals.
Vigilant deer mama is resting in a bed of fescue next to her fawn.
Fireflies blink sheer happiness, laughing in Morse code.
Owl’s successive tri hoots are followed by coyote’s excited yips.
Forest and meadow slowly close their eyes, under the bright stars.
The day relinquishes her responsibilities to night, gladly.
It is a magical time when day and night greet each other, happily.
You need to go far, farther, even farther
Over small streams and tracks
The moon is distant, but can be glimpsed through the trees
A moose lifts his head, a beautiful antlers
King of the forest
Can smell the forest and wildlife
The fox howling at the moon
Echoes in the woods
Two yellow glowing eyes
It is the owl which are on the night watch
Hope that all mice are safely home
The moon disappears behind the clouds
Darkness falls, deep into the forest

(5th in the contest)
into blue skies
pink wings take flight
ripples on the pond
Deep in the Canadian wilderness she gave birth to four pups,
It was a large dug out hole at the base of a tangled tree;
Her mate for life was out hunting with the pack for deer or elk,
Some wolves remained to protect and guard her.
She was a mottled grey and resembled a domestic dog,
Perhaps a german shepherd or a sled dog but much bigger;
Her paws were huge and she had thick fur to protect her in the cold
But she was so gentle with the pups snuggling them.
As dusk fell she heard her mate's mournful howls in the distance,
She knew his howls, growls and barks from all others;
They were mated for life and this was their first litter of pups,
The pups were blind and defenceless without her.
The pack had been more than thirty-eight wolves until recently,
But farmers had trapped, shot and poisoned many in fear;
And trappers had killed others for their beautiful thick fur,
So these pups were so important to the packs future.
And then he was there in the den with her and nuzzled her neck,
He was taller than she and stronger a truly majestic creature;
Crouching with his ears straightened his facial expression was love,
She moved over so he could join them and all was peace.

Tarnished gray, as the doves you have scattered away
you were yelping as if the moon were your prey
Eclipsed by the sage you then vanished from eyes
disguised by the chaparral, just as clouds hide the sky
With cunning assurance, you were closing the distance
Watching me closely, no resistance between us

No one can profess to have full understanding
of the secrets existing, ......or the spirit that binds us.
Yet, we are as one, and as creatures we dwell,
upon sacred land, upon ancient tales
You've followed me closely, with caution, a friend,
I feel a new spirit, that drifts in the wind

Enchanted forest
Trees stand tall, leaves of color
Creatures camouflage

hesitates to crack the gilded grass

Songbirds loose small chirps,
Tiny enough to slip through
Momentary rain.
azure blue ocean
grey seal sunbathes on dark rocks
picture perfect scene
I witnessed this scene this morning when we were doing a recce for a walk with are doing tomorrow with people with visual impairment
3/1/20
Deep in our forest woodland,
where white tailed deer roam free,
I thought to take a moment,
to listen quietly,
to the whispered sighing,
of breezes in the trees.
As pleasant a sound as I have ever heard,
for my senses it doth please!
There I came upon deer grazing,
they showed no sign of fear,
the moment was endearing,
as they watched me standing near.
Silently I stood watching,
twas heaven sent for me,
until a Ruffed Grouse drumming,
disturbed my reverie.
Like a painted pastoral scene,
captured by an artist’s eye,
it was a moment frozen in time,
though time itself flew by.
Then with their white tails swaying,
they trotted down the glade,
which ended my encounter,
with a moment heaven made.
It’s often I remember,
that quiet, forest scene,
when Nature’s generosity,
with pleasures seldom seen,
offered me an insight,
into her hidden realms
where her favour was revealed.
A delight that overwhelms.
