Notes About The Poem

The Wolf, the Moon, and Me

Tarnished gray, as the doves you have scattered away
you were yelping as if the moon were your prey

Eclipsed by the sage you then vanished from eyes
disguised by the chaparral, just as clouds hide the sky

With cunning assurance, you were closing the distance
Watching me closely, no resistance between us

~

No one can profess to have full understanding
of the secrets existing, ......or the spirit that binds us.

Yet, we are as one, and as creatures we dwell,
upon sacred land, upon ancient tales

You've followed me closely, with caution, a friend,
I feel a new spirit, that drifts in the wind

quite the experience is it not, i had a similar encounter in the Olympic Forest sitting by a creek and a wolf came to drink, looked across at me with a face of dismissal of my existence then turned and disappeared into the forest....so much for being the top of the food chain...glad you were richly blessed

You've captured the mystical kinship we share with wolves, whose society and relationship with nature we might do to more closely emulate. Again, your closing line is masterful...leaves me floating among the clouds.

Wow! I wish I could write half as good as you Carrie! Your internal rhyme, your imagery make this poem something special with a connection to the wolf that dwells within the heart of us! I love how this poem made me feel. You honor this beautiful animal with all the reverence it is so deserving of. I expect to see this amazing piece win a trophy! It is going into my faves! : ) xxoo
