Hi, thoughtful poetry and confronting art..... and mathematics, are my interest. Have been writing, poetrying and painting for about 20 years and mathematicing for about 25. Of course we all have thoughts about random stuff often enough, I like putting those random thoughts into verse making sense or putting them on canvas to be a provoker. I prefer all styles of poetry depending upon my mood.

By the way, unless i state that a poem actually occurred to me, then they are all made up, fiction, whimsical, not true events, they are not biographies and only touch on uncomfortable topics to make the reader question things. I believe poetry has the ability to make us question our own morals intimately, like how the bard made us question suicide in Romeo and Juliet.

p.s. the bard didn't do suicide.

What I write in poetry does not necessarily reflect the opinions or morals of the NSW department of education...

PPS: Sprry, one more for the road. PS - I won't say to avoid omniscient point of view completely. It was used in early fiction and if used the wrong way in THIS century? It dilutes your characterization. However, it can be used correctly. One point of view per CHAPTER. (think Stephen King.) Still, you should have a MAIN p.o.v. ... but omniscient p.o.v. works well when the characters end up CONVERGING, coming together in a profound way which is necessary to the story. If you have seen the movie "Crash," (2004, starring Don Cheadle and Matt Dillion) then you see how this can play out. Stephen King used this approach in "The Stand." Slowly, the reader gets to know each character first, before the characters even meet...

I've used and continue to use all three points of view in both my poetry and fiction. In fiction, I tend to use a lot of first person because it makes dialogue a breeze. When two female characters are chatting and both are "she," it can get confusing for the reader if the writer doesn't ensure there are two very different characters conversing. In poetry, I LOVE to use second person because it can heighten a feeling of inclusion. It works best in poetry if the poem is about something nigh-universal that the reader can easily relate to -- an experience like finding out someone has died, loss of love, exposure to violence, global news... (i.e. you saw the second tower fall and you were its rubble...) If I choose third person, I ensure that it is third person limited, as close to first person as I can possibly get. Most of my short stories I've had published are in third person.

First person is best -- you get to act in the story (with occasional narration in the third person).... :-)

I mostly use first and third person:) but sometimes use the second person too, as Andrea said, for didactic writes.. I prefer the first person though:)

I think second person would seem a bit like you were a dictator. Imperative voice: Do this, do that. I rarely see people using it. First person gives a personal feel. Third person seems natural if you are telling a story. I use first and third normally. For something didactic, I would use second but I don't normally enjoy reading didactic verse so I rarely write it either.

It is said, never cross the streams (1st, 2nd and/or 3rd) -- however, I believe it can be done by an expert word streamstress. ;-)
