Lewis Raynes Biography

Hi, thoughtful poetry and confronting art..... and mathematics, are my interest. Have been writing, poetrying and painting for about 20 years and mathematicing for about 25. Of course we all have thoughts about random stuff often enough, I like putting those random thoughts into verse making sense or putting them on canvas to be a provoker. I prefer all styles of poetry depending upon my mood.

By the way, unless i state that a poem actually occurred to me, then they are all made up, fiction, whimsical, not true events, they are not biographies and only touch on uncomfortable topics to make the reader question things. I believe poetry has the ability to make us question our own morals intimately, like how the bard made us question suicide in Romeo and Juliet.

More males are in top of active community, more males have entered bulk writes, yet top ten contest winners are all female???? Thoughts. More males like poetry written by female?

I can only speak for myself and agree with FJ..women in general do tend to write more poetically..as for the men there are quite a few on this site who are very poetic, but not as many as the women therefore they tend to win more..also there are some guys on this site that tend to dump 10 to 15 poems at once causing the active numbers to be inflated

Sad to think of all the great poetry lost to the world because women could not get published in many countries for hundreds of years. And even when they could, they might not be taken seriously, thus the temptation to write under a male pseudonym, as with "George Eliot" in Victorian England.

(Have to laugh - 2/3 of my 'Favorites' have to do with the seasons.) Since we're talking about you, Andrea, I have to mention your poem 'And Sweet Is Her Demise.' I was blown away the first time I read it, and it still always brings tears to my eyes. I literally get light-headed just thinking about it. Tears, but laughter and a big smile shooting up through the clouds. Poetry.

Yes, I see it is fixed now. And Stephen, don't say lesser poets. I just read so many amazing poems this morning (as usual up too early not able to sleep). There is a lot of poetic genius, male and female , at PoetrySoup!!

Finally, my fave poet and model as a youth was Sara Teasdale. However, here at Soup, I have a great many fave poets that are men as well as women. I enjoyed reading the comments of everyone here and they all have some merit!

I didn't read much poetry as a kid. But there were Impressionist paintings, the 'Intermezzo Sinfonico' from Pietro Mascagni's opera 'Cavalleria Rusticana,' Samuel Barber's 'Adagio For Strings,' or perhaps only a few high notes from a piano at the end of a sad movie. Sad music, but surely there is poetry within.

I think women simply enter more contests. It would be interesting to know the stats, but Soup got rid of "numbers" last year, where we could check out our number of wins, vs N/A's and stuff like that. There are a few people who post tons of poems every day just to be in the list of most poetry written. Therefore, the argument of males having more "bulk writes" is meaningless to me. One person on was simply posting the same poem over and over again with different titles. Unfortunately, public sites have many unfair issues. And everything is so subjective in this poetry world!

"This poetry world" - one thing I like about PoetrySoup is seeing poems from Africa and Asia. Australia, Europe and South America too are represented, but it usually seems more familiar to me, less exotic.

Poetry is open to interpretation. It all depends on the sponsor's taste. I'm sure if there were an independent panel to judge, all results would be different for every contest. If one reads enough poetry on this site, it is very easy to pick who wrote which poem, simply by the style in which they write. their uniqueness is their signature. My $.02 :)

So true. Some people "want rhyme," for example. Some don't want it. Some want simple, some want extravagant language. Rainbows and unicorns, or visceral grit? : )

No offence Daniel, I agree with you. You raised a truth about poetic styles, it is noticeable the preferences for judges sometimes..... That's not a bad thing at all. Just something to do with human nature.

I wasn't on the offensive, Lewis, merely stating the obvious. I'm sorry if I offended you. However, since you brought it up. If one is looking for a certain kind/style of poem, perhaps putting that in the directions would produce a better selection.

I just deleted 2 pages of poems from the site back to 2014 and have been removed from all the rankings, who knew, lol. Rankings have no memory.

In 56 of my premiere contests finalised over past 110 days the top two podium placed poets were male.In my ten years here I would say poetic giftings are spread equally between both sexes.Present company excepted ,my top three favourite poets are Adelaide Crapsey,Emily Dickinson and Christina Rossetti but that is probably more to do with the form of their poetry than anything else.I cannot tell the sex of the author in the 2000 poems in the aforementioned 56 contests.It is always a delightful moment to learn the names of the podium poets after I finalise and check out the ' Contest winner' link .
