Recipes for Those With No Mouths” – Stark Hunter’s Meat Loaf – Circa 1962

Stark Hunter’s Meat Loaf Circa 1962
It is 1962 and most of the United States is still primarily white, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant/Catholic. It is a Saturday night and Jackie Gleason is on our deluxe black and white television set out in the living room. Cooking in the little suburban kitchen is my mother’s Meat Loaf. Soon, along about the time Crazy Gugginheim comes on, my mother is dishing up this amazing Meat Loaf, served with Au Gratin potatoes and mixed vegetables.

You will need a big bowl.

And a strong sturdy kitchen spoon; this spoon must have character indeed!

Think James Bond.
You will need to grease a cooking pan on which to cook your loaf.

Use aluminum foil and spray it with Pam.
You will need the following ingredients for the best culinary experience to be had:
*Buy only the best ground round. Low in fat. One and a half pounds.
*Select one egg, a noble one, from the carton in the fridge.

(Crack it open and gently, cleverly, spills its contents inside the big bowl).

*Acquire one onion whole and one green pepper whole. Chop! Chop!
*You will need 1 cup of dried bread crumbs, fit for a royal pigeon!
Chop! Chop!
Now, put all this stuff together inside the big bowl and…

*add one cup of milk.

Stir. Stir. And stir.
*Add salt and pepper here and there along the way.
Now turn on your oven to 350 degrees
And let it get hot!
Now for the most important part…
In a separate container, mix together
*2 tablespoons of brown sugar
*2 tablespoons of mustard and
*One half cup of ketchup… One half cup…
And mix it up thoroughly!
(Be sure the brown sugar doesn’t clump up).
Now with nimble hands and fingers
Transfer your stirred and mixed meat loaf onto the cooking  pan.
Shape the loaf into a nice round size,
(Providing substantial portions for each diner).
Now pour the sauce  on top of your rolled loaf.
Spread the sauce liberally all over the top and the sides.
Now place the loaf inside the oven,
And cook at 350 for 55 minutes.
Then, increase the heat to 400 and let cook for an additional 10 minutes.
The crust will be crispy and add a great flavor.
This will feed a family of four  (and

will cost less than 15 bucks to make).
