Audio- what I learned

Being of the younger generation, I should be the one more in tune with all these apps, mp3s, and so on ... but I've always been "technologically challenged" ... ha ha. It took my brother a lot of convincing just to get me to get a smart phone (and even now it's 4 or so versions outdated) ... oh well. Save for a few, I feel that quite a lot of my poetry wouldn't quite work with being read aloud.

Hi Tim: ' your'e just an old fashioned guy' at heart lol. I am not sure how I figure these things out ( being self- taught) but I do ask Google and somehow muddle through with a strange mixture of naievity and determination. It is always a learning curve. Thanks for your encouragement, always, SuZ

Thanks for notifying me, Suz. Nice to hear what you sound like ... I should have expected the accent as you said you were originally from Australia. Lol. I think you did a great job on your voice endeavor ... for me, I think the Audio aspect is most fitting for very traditional poetry: with strict attention to meter and rhyme, and less on free-verse. The problem with doing Audio is that one can lose some of the "visual aspects" of poetry ... like spacing, parenthesis, phrases in italic, and so forth ... one must wonder if the individual mental voice a reader imagines is conflicting, or not, to the author's perception ... just some thoughts. I've always loved your poetry.

I'm so impressed by your beautiful poetry, Suzanne, and how lovely your voice while reading. You have done an amazing job!! One hesitation I have in reading my own, is that just as when a novel or story is turned into a movie, the reader might lose his own personal "picture in their head" version, they had upon first reading it. I'm still not sure if it enhances or takes away......hmm...still thinking it over.

Lol ... I just posted my comment, and realized you said a similar thing about the individual "picture in their head" ...

Or to put this another way. An actor can win a Tony award for a perfect performance and the playwright can receive nothing.. because the acting was better than the play. OR the playwright could receive the Tony but the actor walk away empty handed. Because the play outshone the acting. Right? ;) The written words should be able to 'speak' for themselves...

I can add tone, anger or fear, read slowly in one stanza and add urgency to another... all with my voice.

I have a love/hate thing with technology (my cell phone is ancient and it doesn't text THANK GOODNESS) Like you, I believe in the art of poetry, that the placement of words, the line cuts and the punctuation are what make the poem readable, audible within the reader (?) I can easily lay stress, create an effect with a read aloud (like I do for my girl when I read her stories.)

Hi Carrie. We're on the same page in every way with this. I am waiting for the delivery of a cheap microphone. I have an older computer with Windows 7 and when I checked I do need a microphone for recordings. Once I get the microphone, I'll stop by here and tell you how it went :)

I'm still trying to figure out how to do the MP3 thing !! (I'm such a dummy!)...so I think you must be thinking of a couple of youtube poems I did quite awhile back. I can't believe I figured out how to do that !! LOL !! Thanks for remembering !!

Hi Carrie: I can understand your hesitation. I can remember being impressed by a reading you did. I think it was for one of the competitions or maybe it was for Dukes radio show? In any case you have a lovely speaking voice and are one of the finest poets we have here.
Date: 5/20/2016 5:33:00 PM
Hey Suz :) I really liked your reading! Me? Well, some of the best Canadian online literary journals also feature recordings... I've been thinking about this, fighting with myself. I finally caved (yesterday) and I've ordered a microphone (cheap, nothing glitzy haha!) I do believe that a poem should hold its own on paper. Reading a poem is performance art, not literary art... but I do see its merits, too. I'll give it a go... I've just been a purist (lol! go figure, me!??!! ) on poetry is for PAPER.. hard to change... Thanks for the blog! So helpful! Cyndi

Hi Cyndi: you are so right about it being Performance art. As most are finding out not every poem is entertaining as a reading. I remember when we had poetry readings at Cafes and some were definitely more entertaining than others. I guess that is why Slam Poetry lends itself to Performance. I'll look forward to your first audio.

Suzanne, I am afraid of aps. I have not even tried one on my new cell phone. I was using the old fashioned kind until a few months ago and it takes me ages just to figure out how to save someone's phone number or send a picture. now they are doing this stuff that must require some kind of way to send one's voice and I have no clue if my computer is even capable of it. I asked our computer geek at school and he did not even seem to want to check it out for me at the school computer. I think I am lost.

all this talk of apps makes my head ache!! Anyway it will be fun just trying listening to people when I come across their voices recorded. I will be happy to hear them once and then resume my old habit of simply reading their poems after that!! I think this kind of things should be reserved for special occasions.

It is a new learning curve but I couldn't' resist the challenge of trying it once. I doubt I will spend a lot of time airing my poems. Maybe special occasions as you say. You do feel more exposed when doing this.

Yes Suzanne all are not meant to be read. I do read most aloud in my head to see if the line breaks and cadence works... nice blog

I agree with Tom.. some poems are better just read from print, and not read out loud... but I do love hearing some being read! I will listen to yours in a little while when I have time alone :)

Suz you have a beautiful voice! I really loved hearing you speak.

Suzanne, I have listened to several so far and in my opinion it is not suited to all poems, and some the sound is so low, it is hard to hear, or is that just me, now having said that let me go listen to your poem... Constance

I found the sound an issue in the different apps I have tried. If I stumble on to one with good sound quality I will pass it along.

Hi Constance: It really does reveal you so much more than one he written words. I also had trouble with the volume. I had the line below the gauges fully blue when it should have been white.

Absolutely beautiful, now that was worth all the work you went through to get it on the poem, and what a beautiful voice you have, excellent !!!
