Sensitive Content- Sincere Apology

Blog Posted by Suzanne Delaney: 3/29/2023 4:01:00 PM

My apologies:

It was brought to my attention today that using the term Bantu might be taken offensively by some people in Africa.  My source told me that Abantu - meaning people - would be better to use,  but best of all would be to simply say, "people. "

I quote my source here, "Just remembered that both Abantu and Bantu are one and the same. The first mentioned is the word in the African languages and the second is the English version. Who ever wrote the articles (listed in the Contest Challenge) were not familiar with the sensitivity of the word in especially South Africa. So, how about creating a unique name for this fun game as it is really incognito:))
My suggestion: Spider Plant Verse (in honour of this first contest that was triggered by our poems)." End QUOTE.

So if I start a blog titled Spider Plant Verse, please post a a thread that is  a challenge (call) and others can reply under that particular thread with a triggered response and so on.

IT MAY CAUSE TOO MUCH CONFUSION NOW TO CHANGE THE TITLE OF MY CONTEST OR MY PREVIOUS BLOG .....Please know that no offense was intended.

Personally Dear Suzette, you did ZERO wrong and anyone that gave you notice that you did...did everything wrong. I'm so sick and tired of these correctness police-- they can go screw and get a freakin life! There is a significant separation between subtleties and overt offense...anything anyone might say anywhere might be taken wrong on Mars-----notice taken, but not embraced...when I consider a source so demonstrably as empathetic as you...

Hi Craig: Thanks for your kind words but Suzette and I had amicably worked this out before I posted the Blog. I think this situation fits more into respecting others customs than a censorship. I became aware of this when I lived in different countries where you could easily offend someone’s customs (without meaning to) I believe we have settled the matter now and I appreciate your thoughts.

I did mean Suzanne and still stand behind my comment---in a world where everyone is offended by something----no one speaks! BTW, everyone has an ASS, but very few have Donkeys---good thing, I'd rather hear a fart than a hee-haw--hope you're not offended?

PS From the onset of the contest, I had activity supported it, but for obvious reasons, I did not enter the contest. I wish all the contestants well and took no offense to either their comments or their enthusiasm for this very enjoyable word game.

I am confused by your post Craig. Surely you meant to address Suzanne and not me. Regarding the location of the sensitivity of material I would like to point out that only in the USA the other word for "donkey" is deemed to be offensive and PS would automatically substitute it with asterisks. In SA the word under discussion is not only offensive, but the use of it is punishable by law in that country. We are an international site and we need to take other people's cultures and rules into consideration. I also don't hold with mindless censure as my poem, Burning books, testifies to this, thankfully, isolated occurrence. Have a nice weekend.

Suzanne, I don't really understand what is going on but I hope the poem I wrote for the contest Bantu is still valid, it has nothing to do with Africa or people and has nothing offensive in it, I think it is beautiful !

Hi Constance: No ….Your poems are still valid. it was just to do with the term used for the style of poem. The Contest will be judged as previously planned. My attraction was to the actual game of looking at something in a different way. I will visit everyone’s poems once the contest is judged. Thanks for seeking the clarification. Cheers, SuZ

Thank you for the update, Suzanne. Your apology is accepted. I think that the renaming is fitting as the spider plant with its multitude of offspring echos this verse form perfectly.

Thanks for your diplomacy in this matter, Suzette: Your input has helped avoid a big misunderstanding.
