Harry, I am sure we have all used a few similar phrases unintentionally. To me plagiarism is intentional and often copied word for word. There was a poet here on PS a few years ago who did that. He copied concrete poems from the internet and posted them in contests. He was reported and removed. For myself, I take pride in knowing everything I post is my work.

I remember this guy, not sure of his name, he even copied some of my shape poems and won contests using them. He was finally banned from soup.

Tania, if it's the same person I remember, this happened long ago, and still he came back and tried it again. Unbelievable!

It has been said, “ There is nothing new under the sun.” Harry I imagine that applies to writing. ”The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun” King James Bible. SuZ

A true life incident comes to mind ~ a musician composed a lyric but didn’t publish it or bring it into public domain, for personal reasons. A few years later, he was astonished to find that some other musician had composed exactly the same song! He asked a medium how it could be so … the answer was simple ~ we’re all connected to universal consciousness and so vibrations set up can be ‘tuned into’ by those who seek likewise or resonate. I’ve often remarked ‘wherefrom came the exalted thought, that inspirations with it brought?’

Harry, for years I read little contemporary poetry for fear of some phrase sticking in my brain and winding up in one of my own poems. Then, I realized that plagiarism is deliberate and intentional. Of course, I would never appropriate another's words on purpose with the intent to deceive or steal, so now I just write and don't worry about it.

Harry, my footle form ( originally conceived) as a witty, pertinent, topical etc 'as is ' moment (as ethereal as candfyfloss) The sequenced hybrid 'footles' has( like topsy )grown here at PS into a ' different animal ' as a poetic couplet form it seems

Can happen inadvertently. Just today someone pointed out that maybe a line or two of my poem or perhaps an idea was similar to a book or a movie … could be, who knows, coincidences can happen. Oscar Wilde had once observed ‘I was born too late to be original’ or words to that effect

The more we read the more we absorb and when composing may be looking for a sentence that seems to come out of nowhere not realising it may have been a sentence in someone else's work that we may have read in the past. It would never be an intentional act though. Tom

Harry, there are only so many ways to write something especially in a form like footles, rest easy, no one here would ever accuse you of plagiarism

Footles are so small. it is impossible that some would not have been repeated, though unintentionally. Actually I find the title to a footle to be where the joke lies . If the title AND the footle are the same, that would make me wonder about plagiarism. Don't worry, Harry. All poets are bound to use same imagery over and over again in one way or another in their poetry and we can't even know it unless we read every single poem here!!

No expert here - sometimes I read a poem here, and it makes me think of a different angle on the same topic, and I try to provide a "hat tip" to the original author. On at least one occasion I can remember, I wanted to use a very specific phrase in a poem, and sent an e-mail asking if that would be ok. I do figure if you put enough of us monkeys in front of keyboards, we're bound to pen the same phrases from time to time, but I certainly don't give much consideration to the idea that someone is "stealing" my words. Thanks for a good reminder to us all Harry, to enjoy, to encourage, but not to steal!

someone once theorized that "if you put an unlimited number of monkeys in front of an unlimited number of keyboards they would eventually write all of the great works of literature.."

Hi Harry! I doubt it very much that you have intentionally plagiarized other poets' work (here on PS or elsewhere). Sometimes a word or phrase just "sticks in one's mind" (like an old forgotten song), and you feel compelled to include it in your scribbling (in a Footle, etc). If you are still in doubt about what constitutes plagiarism (other than the commonly held believes), you are kindly invited to read my article her on PS: "Plagiarism versus Being Inspired By".
