CONTESTS FROM THE OTHER SIDE

Blog Posted by Harry Horsman: 3/2/2020 3:16:00 AM

Hiya Soupers, this is a blog about the other side of poems being judge. We read so much about contestants not happy about their placement, and yes i have had my share of complaints, when running  contests. So to my point the other side. I've been a member of soup for over 10 years now, but never a part of the click or clique so to speak. Not my doing, just too shy i guess.  Anyhow back on track   on 7 yes seven occasions, i have received mail from the judges of contest i have entered, with apologies of not being placed higher in their contest, on 3 of those the mail stated i should and would have placed first, followed by a lot of excuses, some rather personal..Not once did i complain, although a tad disappointed because i know it is not an easy task, and i've always maintain it is soley the judges opinion, but  with that in mind i have become very selective on contest that i now enter, afterall we are told if we cannot stand the heat don't enter, and i agreed entirely with that sentiment.  And to be honest with so many of todays contest where one can almost forecast the outcome, not to enter is becoming an easy decision.,,,

Interesting blog Harry, I haven't hosted a contest but I'm sure it can take up a lot of your time so hats off to those honest poets who judge and hold contests. I remember when I first joined I saw some comments about placements and how friends looked after friends. I thought that can't happen as you don't put your name on your poem. ( I was new to the site) Two poets have also told me in confidence what goes on, so I kept an eye on winners lists, sure enough there it was, so now I predict who's going to place with some judges ( you know who you are) Even Greg was soupmailed once by someone saying place me high and I'll do the same for you, obviously Greg declined and highlighted it in a blog, dishonest judges are as bad as trolls in my book. In the end, the truth will set us free but only if we allow it to---how can we value something that is given to us that is not earned. Sort of circles around like a vulture, devouring what really matters in its wake. As you know Tom, our most valued victories are those no one else knows about because they're too simple to be important to others...and all of that's okay=some still have that to learn, even we

This sounds like you have a great idea for a poetry contest. I would love to see you host your own contest on this subject. It's always good to see both sides of the coin. Have a great day my friend.

These contests are good for flexing the brain. Who cares if we win or not. It’s still fun. Don’t give up
