BIG TEX*
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There once was a cowboy named Big Tex.
was huge like Tyrannosaurus Rex!
His hat large like Texas barn,
he strutted ‘round town with charm
But his love life was a complete wreck.
Big Tex hung out at Texas’ State Fair,
Wore humongous boots and jeans with flair.
with deep voice, wink, and a grin,
He says, “Y’all come on in!”
Look! 'Tex' has buckshot in his derrière!
With lasso in hand, he aims to impress,
missed every steer, what a terrible mess!
He'd shout, "Yippee-ki-yay!"
in a most clumsy way,
And the longhorn would just laugh, no less!
With a chuckle, he dusts off his hat,
“Guess I’ll stick to the dance and the chat!”
So he twirls 'round the barn,
With a laugh and Texas yarn,
The best cowboy—now how 'bout that?
Go Tex! Go!
I thought it would be fine
to find an alien in the jungle
talked about it to everyone
We headed into the Amazon
I was thinking about running into a puma,
space ships, aliens, a dragon,
and possibly a Tyrannosaurus Rex
You cannot imagine how horrified I was
to find an extra large twenty-foot snake
headed my way making hisses
I admit, I'm awfully proud
Of traits with which my son's endowed -
Handsome, kind, thoughtful, wise, and bright.
Could it be, I did something right?
If I was as big as a Tyrannosaurus Rex
I would go to Paris and hug the Eiffel Tower
You might scare people, her husband suggested
I would not look like a Tyrannosaurus Rex,
I would just be as big as one
How would that scare anyone? she asked him
I would be scared of a hundred foot woman, he said.
She rolled her eyes at her husband.
I know, she said. For you are scared even of me.
he did not know where to go with this,
since she held grudges, he quietly tiptoed into the living room
where his beer was waiting
We exploit her gifts, polluting, robbing.
Mother earth has a soul and we've
all heard her sobbing..
Too many species are now extinct.
We need to slow down, reassess, think..
Exxon, Shell, Chevron need new tools,
stop their reliance on our fossil fuels.
These companies must end their
greedy ambitions. They are responsible
for 71% of our global emissions..
We've known that it's coming.
Don't act perplexed.
We could be the next Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Man has been so blessed with this beautiful planet,
for goodness sakes, lets top taking her for grant it.
We have seen every ghastly act and recorded it.
Grisly deeds yellow in archives waiting to be refined and improved.
Tyrannosaurus Rex wakes in a drop of amber, takes a look around,
decides to go extinct again.
Cell phones retweet daily holocausts over coffee and donuts
Evil has friends on Facebook,
the commonplace entertains the unspeakable
as if it were merely an eccentric uncle.
The unborn and the born are culled and are tax deductible.
On the other hand the plague business is thriving.
There are killings on the market –
and of course everywhere else.
From marble and granite to steel and glass,
we were discussing Rhina Espaillat’s On the Avenue in class,
was it 1950s or 1980s NYC and were the fifties
the city’s halcyon days or is it now, the 2020s,
the boroughs teeming with immigrants
from the round earth’s imagined corners,
Hasidim and Muslim, Haitian and Russian, as we
Italians and Irish in an earlier era were. Everything will
be ok or not, the recombinations which make
prediction and intuition fortunately hopeless
and each individual an experiment gone well or wrong.
On the avenue God speaks by spewing
toy and clothing stores, breakdancers and ice skaters,
the Brooklyn Navy Yard seen from the Brooklyn Bridge,
the skyline admired when my car broke down on the Triborough Bridge.
The numbers of us overwhelm, there exist powers
overwhelming for the human body and mind.
I don’t mind but I can’t make sense of it.
Gandhi said What you do may not seem important
but it is very important that you do it. By that what is meant?
Linda complained Why does God always have to be a man?
I opined He could be a she but She’s probably really
a Tyrannosaurus rex. I like to be in America!
We have seen every ghastly act and recorded it.
Yet more grisly deeds yellow in archives
waiting to be resuscitated and refined.
Tyrannosaurus Rex awakes in a drop of amber,
takes a gander, decides to go extinct.
A Dark Net spreads like arsenic and syrup.
Cell phones retweet daily holocausts over donuts.
Evil has friends on Facebook.
The commonplace entertains the unspeakable
as if it were merely an eccentric uncle.
The unborn and the born are culled,
Plague businesses thrive.
There are killings on the market, viral wars
burst spiky eruptions of emojis.
Slave traders operate from strip-malls
owned by chauffeured demons,
while journalists huddle in their alabaster cities
undimmed by human tears.
Pandemonium is the addiction of choice
and the eyes of those in power
glitter in the clear blue sky-dreams
of both the heartless and the homeless.
Drugged you are America,
soon to be sold on an auction block
of your own drugged choosing.
We once sang for you America,
O Beautiful America.
Most well-known dinosaur I suspect
Is the star of Hollywood, Tyrannosaurus Rex
These guys vainly
Walk around mainly
But to fly Pterodactlyls must flap like heck
every ghastly act
and recorded it.
Grisly deeds
yellow in vaults no longer.
Tyrannosaurus Rex wakes
in a drop of amber.
A towering ghastliness
roams free
on a darkening Net.
Cell phones
replay the daily holocausts
over Cocoa Pops and OJ.
Evil has friends on Facebook,
The commonplace
entertains the unspeakable
as if it were merely
an eccentric uncle.
The unborn and the born
are killed legally
culled like baby seals.
On the other hand
the import and export
plague business is thriving.
Have a forcking nice day
America.
Mummy took us to the zoo
she hoped it wouldn’t bore us
In truth I think that mummy knew
we’d see a Brontosaurus
I stroked a small Triceratops
it had a tiny pink horn
I fed him all my chocolate drops
the keeper eyed me with scorn
I kissed a Tyrannosaurus Rex
When I climbed a big step ladder
Mom did all the safety checks
else the keeper would get madder
We were chased by a big Diplodocus
I could hear him snapping his jaws
Then he turned and he winked at us
and began to lick his huge paws
One dinosaur wore dark glasses
and tried so hard to ignore us
His breed no other surpasses
it’s a Doyouthinkhesawrus!
Dinosaurs
Whoever would have thought- a great big dinosaur
would start out very small, inside an egg and bore
A hole to then come out-
just like a bird, would peck;
into the world, be born-
grow tall with a long neck.
There were so many kinds,
Tyrannosaurus Rex
Ceratosaurus and
Sauropods, Raptorex!
What funny names they have- all different as can be,
as were their shapes and size- but all ate hungrily.
Some ate the leaves on trees-
we call them herbivores;
the others, killed for meat-
are known as carnivores
And did you know that they
became extinct in time?
They were not able to
adapt to change in clime.
But they still carry on- in quite a different way-
the genes from dinosaurs- helped form some birds today!
You've probably never heard of the mighty loud roar
Of an tyrannosaurus rex...dinosaur
Because children, did you all know...
That dinosaurs, roamed our lands...years ago
You can see their fossils...In the American National History Museum
A great part of our history...you should really go try to see 'em
There are big ones, little ones, and middle ones too...
And, you'll see some dinosaurs that even flew
Some of the biggest dinosaurs ate green leaves and trees
Some of the smallest dinosaurs ate the birds and the bees
Did you know another dinosaur, was also, good ole...Mother Goose
And, did you know that the last dinosaur left...is Turtle-Bird (see) Dr. Seuss
