The dilemma of threes
applies whether it be,
the way gravity pulls them
in space,
Or how the space
is divvied up or the rent divided up
between the three sharing a flat,
Or even when cutting a cake
to fairly divide into
three pieces by eye
or to give one more or less icing.
Sharing the pie
and sharing the sky
are equally problematic dilemmas
for three of a kind in a bind.
Three of a kind for as long as we can
remember. Parents would shake their heads,
wonder when we’d grow up and get serious
about serious stuff. We egged each other
on. “Did you see that strawberry roan
in the field on the way to school?” “I’ll loan
you my book of ranch-girl poems!”
We loved dogs and anything with hooves,
and words that rhymed or not, that made
sense in a westwind sort of way.
We rode our imaginations bareback.
We never grew up. And now it’s come
to this – no Cowboy Poetry this year
for the old-west Wagon Train event. We’ll
meet on Main Street anyway, to watch
the teams come into town; stand
on the corner, listening for hooves
on pavement drumming to the heart. Just
the three of us reading horse poems
to each other and anyone who cares to listen.
And when the first big black Percheron
comes into view – a wagon-teamster’s Pegasus –
we’ll be flying 17-hands-high on the horses
of our never-grown-up dreams.
TWO JOHNY WALKERS ON THE HOUSE
LINE THEM UP IN FRONT OF ME
GIVE ME FOUR AND ONE FOR FREE
LET ME DROWN MY PAIN IN BLACK LABEL
BECAUSE I'D STOP CRYING IF I WAS ABLE
I ASKED THE BARKEEP TO TELL ME WHAT TIME HIS WATCH READ
HE TOLD ME AND I SAID THAT WOULD BE A COOL TIME FOR ME TO BECOME DEAD
THEN I MADE MY WAY TO THE BACK ROOM
WHERE BIG BRUCE MEANS LOSING MY MONEY AND BRINGING ON DOOM
POET
FOUR CATS SITTING WITH FIVE IN THEIR HAND
NO JUKE BOX, NO SINGER NOR THE BEAT OF A BAND
JUST THE SOUND OF CHIPS FALLING ON THE TABLE
AND I'D STOP CRYING IF I WAS ABLE
I CRY BECAUSE A MAN IN THE SUDAN DIED TODAY
I CRY BECAUSE A WOMAN WAS SODOMIZED IN A MOST HORRENDOUS WAY
I WEEP BECAUSE TO ME JOY IN THIS WORLD IS JUST A FABLE
AND I'D STOP MY TEARS IN IF I WAS ABLE
SO I BET A HUNDRED BUCKS BECAUSE I HAD THREE OF A KIND
HOLDING TRIPS BUT LOSING MY MIND
I WEEP BECAUSE THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO JUST CAN'T STAY FREE
SO LINE UP FIVE IN FRONT OF ME

Tomorrow’s the day
New job on the way
Interview at eight
You gotta look great
In bed on time
Wake up at nine
ALARM NOT SET!
You are the Star
Step out of the car
Know all the songs
What could wrong
Open your mouth
Nothing comes out
LARYNGITIS!
A Poker Contest
You’re at you best
Got three of a kind
It all on the line
Last card is dealt
Guy gives a yelp
INSIDE STRAIGHT!
You’ve been invited
You’re so excited
Relatives in Spain
Arrive in the rain
Then a sign you see
You’re in Turkey
TOOK THE WRONG GATE!
A sports car’s fun
You’ve got one
Cruising along
Not doing wrong
Flashing lights you see
Give your license to me
WALLET’S AT HOME
Find someone to love
You fit like a glove
You want to sin
She finally gives in
Love making’s through
I love you Sue
NOT THE RIGHT NAME!
JESSE JACKSON - KOSOVO MISSION
Belgrade, 1999
They thought to the west
and the homes they all knew
in a meloncholy dark and blue,
these three of a kind on a mission of peace,
these three knights willing to die for you.
America's best
they had dreams of their own,
but now held in a land and alone
where everything is hate and loose in a world
that beats with a heart of stone.
A man from the south;
of their home now unreal,
like a dream time can never steal;
who had hope still alive that love conquers all,
and a love he'll always feel.
His sword was his word,
and he spoke them so well;
they tolled like a liberty bell
Jesse Jackson was truth and light from us all
and the three are now home from hell.
Between the flower, butterfly and the bee
Lovely to look at, but beyond that
Everything is mysterious
From the silence they shared
Until the significant scheme they had achieved
It all became a question for us to think
The rain and the sun are their companions
And the wind will spread their divine scents
On earth, their beauty is untouched
Like the sound of a guitar
The melody can calm a shattered heart
Or a love song, you’d sung repeatedly
Between the flower, butterfly and the bee
A natural process of equilibrium
Where one will covert the others
The sun will rise,
The sun will set.
Love's a gamble,
So place your bet.
You can have a pair.
You can have three of a kind.
If you play the game too long,
You can loose your mind.
There can be two hearts,
There can be an ace.
You can win,
If they are in the right place.
The sun will rise,
The sun will set.
Love's a gamble,
SO PLACE YOUR BET !
