mind suggests we leap
transcending the concept
of an extra day imaginary
brought forth on this day
being a leap year
a sunbird builds a nest
knowing only love
renewing within its heart
in the ever present now
with no memory imagery
ah! to be the bird …

I'm sunbird of the sketched skyline,
Soaring across soft sheaths
Of ebony moonflowers,
Inhaling gossamer death, tonight.

Egocentric, engaged in games of one-upmanship
I developed a jaundiced and judgmental eye
Over time, losing over mind-body my grip
Belied expectations oft made heart sigh
My reflex response was to put others down
Mocking both the living and dead, saw love die
Lines on face hardened, sarcasm bore a frown
Demonic dreams deepened my dark despair
In images thus conjured, I began to drown
It was a Joro spider that made me aware
When a small sunbird was caught in its net
Defying base instinct, it released her with care
I took this as a message to change my mindset
Enabled simply by melding head with heart
Taking no more, mere rebuffs as a threat
I now mock myself; it is a learnt art
Choosing slow consciousness correction
Simply mindfully and gently, adding love to cart
Soul centric introspection cajoles us to shift direction
Igniting bliss within, paving way for soul’s resurrection

On my daily evening walk in the park, I pause to see
Beautiful squirrels and grotesque rats together feed
With neither pride nor prejudice, sharing and caring
It is clear to me that they live by need and not greed
The adjectives I assigned to outer forms I so beheld
Reflects my narrow, unevolved and judgmental view
Oh, woe on me that as yet I see not God in each form
Why on earth does my heart as yet such toxicity spew
Moving on I am captivated by a koel’s melodious song
She minds not an interruption by a crow’s jarring caw
Atop the same tree, in joy and harmony, both coexist
With no anchor for rancour, they understood God’s law
A sunbird constructs her nest patiently, straw by straw
She fears not fierce predators that around her abound
Although she’s so tiny and fragile, in God’s grace trusts
Oh, where within my fickle heart can such faith be found

from behind a window
that leads to my balcony
I observe the sunbird retire
to its beautiful and cozy nest
a gentle, elixirous breeze
seductive and enchanting
beseeches that I step outside
to admire a lustrous full moon
it’s a temptation I decline
for how can I be so callous
to cause a tremor in the heart
of my guest who’s about to sleep
such are the minor victories
of ethereal spirit over instinct
for which we may take no credit
as we follow diktats of the universe

SPRING NOTES
I don’t ask for the meaning of the song of a bird
or the rising of the sun on a misty morning.
There they are, and they are beautiful.

SPRING BIRDS

Before the dawn ripens,
My beloved wakes up.
By her side I’m still roused
In the bemused dream.
The fragrance of her hairs
Itched my placid nostril.
The cool breath of the morn
Unruffled the gist of my body
The thin seam of my skin
Sore by depth of the night.
Breathed into life again.
The luscious lips of bygone day
Kissed the juicy lips of the day
The imagery of my poetry
Blush her lips in velvety glow.
Out of the window
Of my room of passion
The sunbird whistles.
The tree with ripe fruits
Plunges to the earth
Dispersing the fine words
Of my poetry scribbled.
In the terrace between
In and out of the moment,
Me and my beloved
Rest on the day to come,
In the flashes of sun
Just out of the East
I snap a selfie – my selfie.

I look at the eagle sat high up in the tree,
I’m envious of all that he can see.
I look at the agapanthus, a brilliant blue
But the most beautiful flower of all is you.
I watch the falcon soaring higher and higher,
A blue green kingfisher lands on the wire,
Vivid red poker flowers stand stately and tall
But you are the most beautiful flower of all.
The bright flashes of hovering sunbird so small,
The hadedah bird with distinctive call,
The lilies that glow with a vibrant orange hue
But the most beautiful flower of all is you.
White storks tiptoe delicately up the hill,
The dam reflects mountains quiet and still,
Mauve and white flowers grow shaded by the wall
But you are the most beautiful flower of all.
Plants of every colour grow in the flowerbeds
And swooping swallows dart over our heads,
So much beauty’s there in the garden to enthral
But you are the most beautiful flower of all

perching on tender
floral vine...the sunbird sings
the lullaby tune
colors of tender
wings- compete with the flowers...
nature's mastery
the sunbird's song on
floral vine...scents and tunes
like milk n honey

Scrambling across the sky
Oh, just to know
How the sun bird flies
With my brain in tow
Growing in my mind
Fluttering on a wing
Flight from shoreline
Oh, how he sings
Lift on high old one
Perch upon thy crag
Closest to the sun
Waving your feathered flag
How we so enjoy
Your screech of ahoy!

Can only smoke remain visible to thee?
I arraign the distance carved out in gashes.
Proximity charred me to ashes,
Left me to burn, yet never felt the flame.
One glare from the dazzling dame,
To burn one's own nest, how absurd!
Blazed my heart, that sunbird.
