What would a Halloween Stew be?
Would it be a mountain of bones under a tree?
Something mysterious like-
A carving in an untouched forest on a hike.
Would we be cooking rabbit fur?
We really can’t concur.
Why is there a pinecone on top?
For sure, this is a terrible slop.
A few bats appeared from their cave that night.
To eat this festive delight.
The werewolves lagged behind.
But they were feeling kind.
No fights broke out at all.
Even when a vampire got a call.
They took his last bag of blood.
Mixed it with old mud.
For the stew to be a feast.
For every kind of beast.
They saved him a bowl as well.
He liked the poisonous smell.
What would a Halloween Stew be?
Without some stolen candy!
So they threw in a few chocolates and some hard candies too.
After snacking on a few.
Then the stew turned the perfect green.
Started to glow with the addition of a jelly bean.
What could a Halloween Stew be about?
It gives us the energy to howl and shout.
We like the taste as well.
We treat it as a wishing well.
Toss in as much garbage as possible.
So that us monsters will be unstoppable!
Fruits are good for snacking,
Like an orange or a plum
Or a peach or nectarine
Or pear or apple, even some
Within the melon family,
Where even just a slice
Of a cantaloupe or honeydew
Or crenshaw would suffice.
Most people are content with one
When looking for a munch
Except, of course, for grapes because
With them, you’d want a bunch.
I wonder why, when Mother Nature’s
Plan for fruits was hatched,
She came up with the strange idea
That grapes should be attached.
There must have been a reason
Why on stems they’ve gotten stuck,
But it’s kind of fun to eat them
‘Til you find you’re out of pluck.
Toss a smidgen
To a pigeon
And you know he’ll eat it,
Though once fed
A crumb of bread,
You can’t get him to beat it.
Still, what’s worse
And worth a curse
Are seagulls if you’re snacking,
For I’ve found
When food’s around,
They sometimes try attacking.
My advice –
You’ll pay the price
By tempting those with feathers,
For they know
Where humans go,
There’s food in any weathers.
‘I was born with the meaning of home running through my veins.’ Lauren Eden
inside the back door of our house our laughter rang out
as we sat chit-chatting around the kitchen table
playing board games or telling silly stories
upstairs at night we giggled in our bedroom
snacking on treats we had sneaked into our room
when dad would yell up the stairs at us to go to sleep
not able to quell youthful exuberance
for we had ties bound by a forever sisterhood
born by fate – I don't know
but molded nevertheless by our time together
secrets whispered in the dark
and heartaches assuaged sympathetically
fighting at a minimum
the place where today
though it be no more a building made of brick
is but a phone call away
When I was a kid, pistachios
Had shells they dyed bright red
And sure enough, that color
To your fingers quickly spread.
It didn’t wash off easily,
But left a tell-tale clue
About what you’d been snacking on,
That bright red proof on view.
Today, I cracked pistachios
And wondered, as I ate,
Why someone once decided
To disguise their natural state.
No matter why, that dye is gone –
Red fingers not the answer.
For all we know, pistachios
With dye might have caused cancer.
Twas the night before Christmas, I finished the trees.
And feeling good cheer, I'd drank a few beers.
The treats I'd laid out didn't last very long.
As I found myself snacking, I knew that was wrong.
Then, later in bed, I awoke with a start.
And realized the reason: my own noisy fart.
Like sounds of ducks quacking, my buttocks were clapping.
I was almost surprised that the bed sheets weren't flapping.
It woke my poor spouse, and he yelled, "What the hell!"
As the noise from these quack-ers had caused quite a smell.
I told him a flock of wild ducks had flown in.
And although it was late, they'd decided to sing.
He said grab the Gas-X and tell them to leave.
As their singing was lousy, and he felt he might heave.
I told him I'd looked, but the Gas-X was gone.
And I feared that the duck tunes may last all night long.
So I handed him earbuds plus nose plugs as well.
And I said that would help block the sounds and the smell.
He gave me a look, then he quickly fired back.
"There's a wine cork downstairs; it will help plug that quack."
Excitement is building there is no time to spare
A trip awaits, I ponder what to wear
The kids are all dressed anxious to get out the door
Upon our arrival, we are met by a guide who lets us know what we have in store
We are reminded that we are their guests who greet us in their unique ways
First up, a pride of lions let out a roar, listen to what they say
Giraffes snacking on tree leaves look down and shake their heads as if to say hi
Chimpanzees leap from tree to tree almost like they can fly
Ever wonder what they think of us and why we are free
Think of what they sacrifice just to be on display for us to see
If they could talk what do you think they would say
We must be kind to all living things every day
Tried to prevent,
Dogs from snacking on the cat litter smorgasbord.
Bought a gate,
But it's too late!
Cats to old,
Not very bold.
Pees outside of gate,
Oh, what to do,
He's peed in my shoe!
The gate works fine,
For those dogs of mine.
Now if I could just get my cat,
To pee on the other side!
While he's still alive!
My lifetime dream is about to take place
A trip so spectacular it creates a smile lighting up my whole face
Camera in hand I board the tour bus
The roar of the mighty lions a greeting surely directed at us
Mischievous monkeys scatter from high atop trees in a quick flash
Rays of the sun reflect on a herd of hungry hippos eager to splash
Impressive elephants cross right in front of us
Lofty giraffes snacking on leaves look down checking out all the fuss
Darkness starts to creep in as the jungle starts to fall asleep
The excitement of this adventure has reached its peak
Lasting memories of the journey I will cherish forever
Thanks to the animals who made it so much better
It will remind you of alchemy
how taste and image don’t align;
Lypophrenia hits you,
best friends the county fair;
Memories play back
while snacking on
those cotton
candy
grapes.
When you go shopping, do you browse
And stroll up all the aisles,
Searching for surprising “Wows!”
That might elicit smiles?
Or do you clutch your list in hand
And check off every item
That’s always purchased as you planned
Each time, ad infinitum?
No matter how you shop, at least
When you’re back home, unpacking,
You’ll know that chances have increased
For some impromptu snacking.
My reading nook is a quiet place, filled with my favorite things.
Books I have read more than twice, plush pillows and cushions.
The sun filters through the cherry blossom tree in the spring.
In the summer I often fall asleep on the blue window seat.
I have spent more hours in this room than any other place in the world.
Taking my time devouring books, snacking on crackers and peanut butter.
My hound Bluebell lies here during the day, waiting for my return.
It is a comfort to know someone is waiting for me all day long.
Dark is home for this rogue Lioness,
still some monsters I can’t benchpress;
So I do whatever I can to survive;
The hunt can never really be over,
even while being courted by a lover;
Handsome he is at the foot of the bed;
Pretty words can persuade it’s true
that when needed he will shelter you;
Until you’re a weapon too hard to wield;
Snacking on the crust of upper class
similar to a kill in Serengeti grass;
I always protect my safe haven.
