Pata-pat pat pat
Making tortillas by hand
They have to be round,
And the masa must be fresh.
Ah, but so good when they're fried....

The Spanish had armadas; the Americas, flotillas. The Amazon has capybara; the Andes has chinchillas. Kentucky has its sassafras; Madagascar has vanilla. Napoleon lost at Waterloo; Frazier, in Manila. Will a person tell the Mexicans how to pronounce tortilla?

yam yam I went to the store to buy six eggs
and twelve cans of club soda
campari tomatoes smiling at me
I love my negroni and can make a mean martini
spinach came along to make a tortilla
mariposa a butterfly
walking the street with my bag
they chant we love your tattoos
nothing like the shit we see today...

Listen to poem:
Mi Mexico lindo:

Burnt orange and ochre --
color de cafe --
pineapple, lime, red pajaritos...
land of mananas, grace in mantillas...
balanced canastas, ojos expresivos.
Sunshine and heat, fiesta y corrida,
salt and tortilla, pride and tequila.
Frijol and machismo and chile con queso.
Adobe, caliche, sweet agua fria...
Mexico, te amo mucho, y su gente amable!...

Slimy gloppy corn smut
Smeared on a tortilla
Tastes like a monkey's butt
Thank you, Pancho Villa.

Crows' hearts in chili sauce
Beer-battered crickets
Bad luck and double-cross
Ten dollar tickets.

Bar fight in El Dorado
Devil on the trail
Mule train in Colorado
Bandits of the rail.

Vampires and gunslingers
Snakes off the grill
Harlots, saloon keepers,
Ghosts of Boot Hill....

Don'T You Want To Be There
Don’t you want to be there
When I look back and turn around with it all
Behind us with it all
Wrapped up and we can be and dance
I may sing, or at least we’ll laugh until
We choke and they can all stare
With you there was never anyone else around anyways
It is with you that I lose it all and
It all falls away
I want to be there when all we have to do
Is eat scrambled eggs and bacon in a tortilla
And outdo each other and laugh until we can’t breath

MFL 10/20/2009...
