Today it's a soundless murmur

The cold light of dawn nudges awake
A new day. A day full of possibilities
And promises, sometimes empty but
Convincing nonetheless, like a nest
Intricately pieced together and crafted
By a doting mother's beak, only to be found
Empty.
What has become of them?
Flown, now grown, or tumbled out by
The cold-hearted cuckoo?
Perhaps deconstructed by the greedy jaws 
Of a fox, whiskers bloody, satisfied....

at times
Though I would be first
to admit
of needing nudges in different
directions

inclined to linger too long
under shady canopy

or at the seashore
gazing off into dreamy
horizon

my mind inclined toward
repainting sunsets
rearranging stars into
unique constellations

or writing poetry
strictly for sojourners

each poem a gateway
to ports further unknown...

A calf pushes free from his mother.
The cattle call and none do yield
As she cranes her neck in welcome.
She licks the womb’s natural shield
And nudges him to awaken,
But he lies where he fell in the field
As the grass breaks free beside him.

The prairie to the sun has kneeled
Until the line between is illusive -
Golden of sky, golden of field -

Getting dressed is a conundrum
Doe's this go with that, I don't know
The whole debacle has me numb
That's where my wife steals the show

She doesn't tell me, what to wear when

I'm ready to go out, but then
Crafty questions float through the air

Was it last night you wore those pants?
I agree because I don't have a clue
