A grocery shelf in Soup Creek
Has been vacant throughout the week
With Pinkerton care
Now Vegemite's there
Tom's living on bubble & squeak?
If you ever need to fall in love
watch her pick through
red onions in the produce aisle,
alone,
on a warm July evening.
Quick trip to the grocery store
not looking for anything more;
Suddenly a cute cashier!
Damn! Didn’t fix my hair
before I walked out the door.
a young man reaches for green tea
with lemon
but the shelf is empty and he sighs
it’s the tiny deaths in life
that prepare you for the big one
beer is on sale again.
it always is.
brown bottles
sweat.
their tears largely ignored by the squeaky wheels of a tired mom’s shopping
cart.
A question that's no longer needed
For its answer is largely unheeded
Where'd you go on vacation? ~
Grocery shopping & the gas station
out grocery-shopping
with her mom. she shrieks with joy...
mom picked up ice-cream

there was once a fish in a store
who wanted to be free once more
So he flipped and he flopped
and he rolled and he hopped
until a kind soul opened the door
My iguana bit my nose off in Muskogee
I'm ashamed I let myself run out of beer
If I'm caught driving sober to the grocery
They might deport my ass right out of here.
cracking like a bat
the summer storm
moves in quick
like ants to aisle nine
where chocolate chips
litter the floor
& the culprit runs away,
scared of the thunder
Grocery prices are now so inflated
I eat dried yams 'till my hunger's abated
Everything cost a mint
My billfold grows lint
Then again, food is so overrated!

The pure joy of buying
hummus on sale,
watching the green numbers
shrink on the checkout screen -
saving thirty cents
what could be more
important than this?
outside the window
male goldfinch eats fennel seeds....
drinks birdbath water
think~ husband likes coffeemate
we're out, jot on grocery list
cold front moving through
heavy snowstorm approaching
darkening shadows
grocery with empty shelves
setting up zig-saw puzzle
written January 14, 2022
the sun sets maroon
around eight o’clock
it mixes elegantly
with the electric streetlights
in the parking lot.
I take out my pen
& add cranberry /
orange juice to the list
Silly goofy
Could be looking 40 years
If he’s anything like me
Grocery shopping
Looking for book
we both could get lost
Stick with Anna Mae
Pete the cat
then we both wanna go home
Grocery shopping is sure a lot of fun
Especially waiting in the car sitting on my bum
Oogling girlies go by
Showing boobs and thighs
Even though my parts sometimes go numb
This is where
I will work out
my poetry.
It is only for
my poetry.
It is not for
grocery lists.
It is not for
phone numbers
although
in a pinch
it could be.
Everywhere I look I see words.
In Magazines
In newspapers
On Billboards
Words are in books
Words are in grocery stores
Words are in malls and even parks
Words surround me
Day in and day out
Going to the grocery store?
Look at all the food galore!
Empathetic for all those without
Give to church and maybe charities without a doubt!
Lucky to live in U.S.A.
Have enough money to pay!
grocery shopping
I see everyone in masks
does anyone smile?
strangers even stranger now -
a type of isolation

I watched a man in a red and black flannel shirt
walk into the bathroom holding a box of tofu
and then
the man in the flannel shirt walked out without it.
He is alive and breathing just like me.
Grocery shopping is sure a whole lot of fun
Especially sitting in the car waiting on my bum
Oogling girlies go by
Showing boobs and thighs
Not too old but sometimes my parts go numb
I write 'em in a car, on the back of a horse
I write 'em while sitting on the throne of course
One place I won't
While crossing a moat
And definitely not shopping at a grocery store
i can smell her chocolate and peanut butter as i enter the grocery store
do you smell that?
sweet salty Reeses peanut butter cups
i envision myself unwrapping her aluminum foil
bite sized?
heck no!
