Notes About The Poem

Honestly, I do not feel isolated in this strange new world today. I do all the same things as before except that I teach with Zoom now (and the advantage is that I get to sleep in). I do miss the fun sociable part of interacting with my students in the classroom, but basically the only thing making me feel weird  these days is a strong sense of foreboding. Also it is so strange to me going into the stores and even seeing little kids in masks.

I realize isolation is a big problem for many people, and sadly, it's a big problem for the elderly who are alone, but I think the contest was about how we are personally affected, so this tanka is basically it for me!~

A Type of Isolation

grocery shopping
I see everyone in masks

does anyone smile?

strangers even stranger now -
a type of isolation

I totally second your thoughts on this one Andrea. Though I've wandered in this world for only three decades but the world is getting stranger than earlier each day. We are already isolated. The only changes being those safety measures now. Congratulations on your win! :) Stay safe!

Not to much has changed for me except people trying to get out of your way. A lot still do not wear masks and our virus numbers are low. Do wash the hands often and they are getting dry. Well stated. love phyl

This is how I feel too, Andrea. I don't teach but nothing has really changed for me other than using Hand Sanitizer way more often and wearing a mask and feeling like you said, a foreboding, that I believe might come from the fact that the masks seem to cause others to "not smile"... or greet in anyway.. sad. I know exactly how you feel here. Love and prayers

"Strangers even stranger now" is a great line! I miss the smiles, too, Andrea. Rico's right, I look at the eyes, and try to smile with my eyes when I make eye contact. But mostly, I'm just sitting at home. Strange times, indeed!

Don't look at the mask; look them in the eyes! One wink could change your day! Aloha! Rico

So true your feelings Andrea. I feel the same way. What these monsters have done to society and mankind is sickening. Stay optimistic and know that the good in Christ win in the end. God bless you...

Strange times we live in Andrea, it was tough at first not seeing family but thankfully restrictions have eased a bit. Good luck Tom
