Creator
I wish I was a scent creator
for Yankee Candle
I can just taste them now:
fresh cut grass,
gasoline fumes,
dragged dirt,
after rain smell,
where you breathe in
and the air tastes like dirt
or earthworms....

magic oil released in the air
prior to rainfall
alerting us to earthworms
and April showers
Being a pluviophile I adore
the fragrance of petrichor
it opens up my memory
light delicate rains
and cold bitter pelting rains
I savor this scent in silence...

Me Before I
I reek of trauma and a soiled past,
my lungs are full of mud
from when I was buried alive.
Life was not kind to me,
neither was I;
I berated myself and took down
my own worth.
Now I sit among the earthworms
and the grieving beetles,
remembering how I was
before me....

The Verge of April
Green twigs drip late into the day, birdsongs bloom from the windblown. Soft are the veins that leach from the leaf. Sweet the prodigal sap that seeps. Earthworms salt and curl in the opulent swirl, swell in the muddy and proclaiming. Full are the snuggery wombs.

Outdoor Reading
Would rather recite poetry
in a forest
in a dell
in a woodland
in a meadow

Would be joined by
squirrels
chickadees
earthworms

Would not judge
my poetry and say you suck

Would rather recite poetry
by a river
by rocks
by jolly green giants
by humming birds

Would rather recite poetry
in nature than at an open mic reading...

Summer Storm
by Maureen Staley Cary

When I hear that faint rumble, deep in the clouds,
The summer sky will darken, lead-gray
The rain will come in slanting sheets,
Forming mist as it hits hot, hard earth
The birds will retreat, like the ants,
But the earthworms will emerge from the softened soil,
Content in the break from August heat....

Daffodils are here.
Lilacs are whispering.
The earthworms rule.

Tomatoes are green.
Tulips are having tea.
The earthworms rule.

The green peas need shucked.
The marigolds are splashing.
The earthworms rule.

Garden is alive.
There is buzzing of the bees
The earthworms rule.

Garden is greening
But Papa is going fishing.
Earthworms are now gruel....

Autumn
Cold drops of water hit her face
Her glasses begin to fog
The smell of earthworms in the air
Icy puddles to splash through
Rubber boots shiny with the wet
Crunchy red and amber leaves
Autumn has descended once more
And with it dampness and chill
The winds pick up with gale like force
She dreams of summer beaches
Her house is in sight just ahead
A welcome haven at last...

Frames
Frames hold nature best.

A shafting of light sifts gray marsh and water--
turning past dim hills of hay
solemn in silence.

An essence of earthworms fill the air
as light seeps through a colander of clouds,
catching the ephemeral cattle in a vase of sun.

How gentle is the hand that lightly places
and is gone
as evening rings clear and cool
like the edge of a wine glass....

Bask in the light
Linger in the shadows
Dig

Earthworms are good and
Slugs are bad
If you’re a gardener, that is
If you’re a bird it doesn’t make a difference
Children love rolly pollies

Some spiders and snakes bite
Most don’t
Daddy long legs don’t
Neither do boa constrictors
But they hug too hard

If you think giving up cigarettes
Or chocolate
Or television’s hard
Try giving up suffering
Now THAT'S an addiction!...

Animus In Prelude
Coffeeblood castings surface
Earthworms rip through trenches
Tangleweeds tug at my limbs
Twisting ferns rake through my hair
As spikes of foxglove ready a violet strangle
The sun itself is fixing to swallow me up
Its incisors cutting through the sweet dream sky
Grass wet with venom spit
The vapors rise to sting my eyes
Red and yellow seeps through thin skin
Sweat, the traitor, dares to join with soil

Morning is the enemy....

Premium Member In a Box
This box is too short; I’m in a cramp,
needless to say, it is very damp.
Earthworms are crawling; moving in,
at least it is not a next of kin.
I cannot see without my lamp,
besides, the air is mighty thin.

In this cold drab box I lie,
left without saying goodbye.
I wasn’t in a hurry or rush,
to fill this still breathless hush.
Nor did I have the time to cry,
before hidden by earthy lush...

April Rain
The long awaited needed rain finally came in gentle drops. Thirsty daffodils greedily quaffed the tepid precipitate while their odoriferous scents reluctantly merged with ozone creating a pungent bouquet that stimulated the nostrils. Far afield from the daffodils robins comb the newly wet grass for ever emerging earthworms that are coaxed above by the rain. Soon the tugs of war begin between the two adversaries.

Premium Member I Saw a Robin Today
I saw a robin today and hope swelled in my chest I wondered all winter where they had been hiding, These harbingers of spring with tangerine breast. I saw a robin today and hope swelled in my chest Immediately I forgot my troubles, realized I’m blessed The ground is wet, rich with earthworms providing, I saw a robin today and hope swelled in my chest I wondered all winter where they had been hiding.

Premium Member Call Him Pops
Hey there, old man, old man
  Where did you come from

Son, you can call me Pops, and
Like you, I came from a putrid drop

Hey Pops, Hey Pops, tell me
  Where are you going

Like you, son, I'll need me a dug-out
'Cuz I'm headed for earthworms and maggots

One more question, Pops, if I may
If I get to Heaven, what should I say

Tell Heaven the Truth -- Earth was pure delusion
And you're hoping God will clear up the confusion...

Premium Member Going fishing
I miss early mornings
the chill on my legs in the boat
as we glide easily across the lake
the smell of fish and earthworms
the sound of birds in a faraway tree
I miss hearing the water ripples
as fish come to surface
I miss my great aunt and uncle
teaching me to fish
as I cast the line and
hook the back of my shirt
not once but several times
I miss the lake and it's surroundings
wondering after 36 years
how much it's changed...

An Injurious Fly On the Wall
if i were a fly on the wall with a paintbrush,
i'd be lost and every reflex of mine would be disabled by confusion
my handicap would prevent experiences with bliss but would cause catastrophes with heartbreak
by dawn i would dead and unknown with the dried up earthworms beneath the ground of your throne
a familiar footprint would represent the mediocre attempt of my amorous stint....
....and splattered would be i, the proverbial wall dwelling fly.......
