September
SEPTEMBER

Leaves were at the treetop
Now they are round the bottom
Wind’s in gusts and just won’t stop
I must be ankle deep in autumn

Elation-
taking the long way
Grandma with her stick and me
ankle deep cold creek

homing pigeons rise
circling evening skies
fledgling blue-bars in training

blackberry stained lips
sipping hot sassafras tea
fireflies welcome home...

Seven Candles
SEVEN CANDLES

Balloon hysteria,
Paper hat pandemonium,
Blur of arms and legs,
Dance music deafens.
Seven candles in one big blow -
Almost impossible.
Carefully wrapped presents stripped fast -
Ankle deep in patterned paper.
Same next time;
Except eight candles....

Below the Maples
Last night a high wind
undressed the maple grove
it broke both twig and bough.

A flying carpet fell,
blood-tinted gold
spackled the woodland floor,
all in a heap and litter.

If you walk ankle-deep there
your shoes learn to speak
with the dying and the dead....

Sebastopol
Sebastopol

Was it a dream
Soldiers
In thick ankle deep
Overcoats
And I had none
It gets dark early
In Sebastopol
A blessing
A tried to buy
An overcoat
Was arrested
Sweet wine they sold
For cigarettes
Sent back on board
Brezhnev
Did the driving
What do I know
It might still be
The darkest place
On earth....

Swishing Leaves
Leaves fell like confetti, upon an autumn bride

Swirling in their multitudes, across the countryside.

Along the path I walked they lay, some were ankle deep

I took such childish pleasure, as I swished them with my feet.

The wind was fairly blowing, branches nearly bare

I pulled my collar around my ears, a chill was in the air....

Copper Leaves
Layer upon layer of copper leaves,

Lay here, and all around.

As the birch tree lost it's canopy,

And carpeted the ground.

Beneath my feet, some ankle deep

Some falling through the air.

Autumn's gusts gathered strength,

And spread them, everywhere.

Ankle Deep
And the night I wade ankle deep
in stars, and moon dusts caressing
fall. Bespoke in the cloak of your
eternal love, these footsteps of
passion and desire are easily
made. And to my side you I
whisper with words so sincere,
words so delicate, for only you to
hear. Answer me with open arms,
before the fated dawn, that I may
take of you and your heart adorn....

Written In Blue Mercury
snow falls
as silently as sleep
pressed snowflakes
icicle flowers
between the wind and windowpane
melt their way to sill

polished chrome darkness shivers
ankle deep in frost
night’s breath spills
along the frozen glass
its silver shadow rolls
and condenses with the dawn

night’s epitaph
written in blue mercury
trickles down my windowpane
in the light of a new day...

Only For a Moment
Biking along Lehigh drive
On an early sunny morning
Not a cloud in the azure sky
My! My! What a wonderful day!
I continued onward until
I reached the Lehigh boat-launch pad.
No longer able to resist
The allure of the calm river
I laid my bicycle against
A hillock, shed my shoes and socks
And walked to the shallow rivers edge
Stood there for a moment or two
Walked in ankle deep from shore
And became a young lad once more....

With Child
He put his ear to her belly, heard a milky cloud gurgling like a water spigot, the ankle-deep sounds of red plasma and urine, the murmur of mollusks in mouthing waters; succulent voices pushed through narrow throats. ‘Love me’, she said, ‘make love to me as I swell and sweat into a woman you have never met’. He said nothing but did tickle her glowing anus, did tongue her swollen, blue in-between lips.

A Day By the Ocean
Smell the sweet and salty air
Roam the wide beach without a care
Walk ankle deep in the ocean's cooling foam
Dig in the sand till the cows come home
For the fleeting moments spent in this magical place
Forget the outside world and its fanatic pace
Be a child once more, let your mind roam free
See life not as it is but as it could be
We live but once and time is a but a fleeting friend
So cherish this time from glorious beginning till end...

Ptarmigan
Snow chickens dust the high moors.
White partridges grounded by rain
crouch and huddle
burrow into the gorse

then as if forgetting the storm
heave up into the wet air
just a little way
cluck, bluster, and rattle,

only then to settle back
scolding and flustered
as only termagant ptarmigan
can.

Binoculars tight to eyes,
soaked, ankle deep in mud -
chilled to the bone.

Highland cattle
stare back blankly
as if I were another
silent P....

Ether Real
Could I hold your hand in my rough callused own
Walk you through soft Summer rain
Hold you so closely my nostrils explode
In joy so exquisite it’s pain
Wouldst care to go dancing on beaches of sand
Splashing in ankle deep surf
Close eyelids so tightly the red glows and clouds
And dream into softness of safe
We’ll travel together in dreamland of sight
Holding to pleasured delight
Winter wet wonders are yet to unfold
It’s not nice to be lonely at night...

Cypress Evening
Cypress ‘knee's’ lap in the light
as dusk wades in.

Evening parachutes down,
it plants shallow pother
around ankle-deep trunks.

Anhinga necks stir shadows
under a low moon.
This is the gurgling gills
of a melting evening.

Florida ends at every lakeshore
where night-fevers begin.
A heated gloom that thickens
where bugs quicken.

We are locked into the chaffing songs
of crickets,
the drilling buzz of mosquitoes,
as cypress roots soak
in the dark dank air....
