You're a Street Map that has to be believed.
George Street 1975 then a jewel in everybody's Crown, Mister K too.
Croydon had it all, the weekly Safeway shopping -
Grants , North End, Greyhound and L & H Cloake,
even a Manhattan skyline -
Shop girls I was too young to know
a la W.H Smith's Whitgift Centre
with a surfeit of ready Queen and Eagles albums!
even the YMCA
would have done Disco
B.T Express's "do it till your satisfied"
I believe,
and the always evergreen
Van Damme Bar.
The Tavern in the Town
fondly recalled.

Every time I go to the store;
I see those same bare walls;
What's the issue;
What's America doing eating toilet tissue;
Shelves are still empty,
no matter what time I go;
And every time I go to the store;
I see those same old blank walls;
America what's the issue;
What you doing eating toilet tissue;
Shelves are still empty no matter where I go;
I go to Sam's Club, Kroger's;
I go to Fairway, Wal-Mart, Safeway;
I go to Kmart, Sears and Walgreens oops!
Some of those stores,
not here anymore;
Not trying to whine and cry;
I just want to wipe my behind;
America what's the issue;
Why y'all eating( buying) all this toilet tissue;
It's not that much bowel movement going on;
So please stop hoarding and give me a roll;
Every time I go to the store;
I see those same bare walls;
Oh!, ah! Could someone anyone somewhere give me a roll,
I,
I gotta GO-
What's the issue;
What's America doing eatN toilet tissue

In my dream they were an old couple wrinkled
small and gray smiling faces wishing us well
as I was growing old myselff with crinkled eyes
away from any medical unexpected surprise
instead I felt the sun’s warmth, the trees, blue skies
and all the potential with future bright living days
my husband was no longer in a hurry
no running to the pharmacy at Safeway
instead we walked in the rocky cliffs by the bay
hearing the tumble and rumble of waves
the seal barks, surfers shouts, the ocean spray
no worries about hidden dangers of infections
no tired, achy muscles. no daily injections
only reflections and projections of life
of music and lights with the body’s insistence
moving through the earth with persistence
to fight for the life of the forests and seas
to listen to the rhymes of music’s dances
the light of transcendence the reality of excellence
the sentient force organic in the cosmic universe
that transforms all life in an open free existence
And when I awoke in the light of the sun
I heard the small birds' songs ——-
——- offering my heart their assistance

5 and 10, a quarter to nine
The shops opening up at downtown, Man
Must hurry up and hurry out
Get out of Woolworth, Brandis, Richman Gormans
With a dollar, I would by twenty dollars of merchandise in them days
And with 45 cents I would by at Safeway a pound rice
That was so nice
Goodwill's second hand stores so much so buy and believes in,
I would so much be achieving
Because I AM a...

Thought about over thirty years of Easter eggs
done up in a thousand different ways.
Finding late in the evening that the dregs
of eggs were spoiled and quickly to Safeway
to buy a few dozens to boil and dry,
then wax and dip and batik and paste
and make a mess, oops!, forgot to fix dye,
run to get some vinegar, have to waste
a few experiments that went awry,
oh well, we will just have to eat them with
some salt and pepper, then with quiet sly
steps throughout the house in greatest mirth,
in semi darkness hide the little oval
messages of love to be found by all.

Dirt under my nails
A withered feeling
I did not notice the sun
Until I succumbed to a weakness
In by back and knees
My shoulders sagged
My eyelids were
Like those lead fishing lures
I found in a corner of my scrape yard
I’d like to call my garden old
The simplification of watching the
Process of spring
Is a spring
Daffodils sprout from my table
They are yellow, from Safeway, butter-cup gold
Morning glory bells and daisy clusters
Could not be crushed
In their proliferation on the chicken-farm road
The old lady sat triangular
A heart’s distance to my house
She thanked me for a gift of an orchid and gladiola
They were on silken paper, but not fake
She thanked me for the real thing and some
Potato salad my children had delivered
I smiled-
There was no dirt under her nails.

Whispers crackers to the cheese,
"Lean a little closer please...
I'll bet the party's tomorrow night"..
Cabernet shivered in sudden fright,
The olives decided to bide their time,
And snuggled closer to the lime...
"Hope the party is a raging blast,
'Cause I think it's going to be our last!"

Haughty Banana turns away from Cabbage and holds her nose.
Amorous Apple whispers to Peach, "You're much lovelier than Rose".
Fragile Lettuce edges away from frozen Maiden Ice Cream,
And shy Violet cries to one and all, "If you come near me I'll scream".
Butter is quickly looking around to find his close pal Bread
And Cauliflower has stolen a mirror to gaze at her pretty head.
Young Weiner says to old Hot Dog, "Now what are we doing here"?
Old Hot Dog smiles and cajoles his friend, "We're going to a picnic, Dear".

There once was a house up on that hill.
Just a stones throw away from the old saw mill.
It stood so tall, majestic and bold
with tales and fond memories waiting to be told.
Four generations had called it their home.
Most born by a fireplace handmade from stone.
Reared with firm hands in comfort with care,
I'll bet they ate lunch somewhere right over there.
The walls were all painted in yellows and blues.
There was an old woodstove once thought of as new.
Many a night voices echoed from the porch
beneath a dimly lit lamp from a brass antique torch.
Quite often the house was filled with music and glee.
No doubt in my mind it was really something to see.
There were laughter and tears, hearts mended and broken. T
Times of sorrows and joy though rarely spoken.
Oh I swear if that house had two eyes and could speak,
the tales it would tell of all it had seen.
But we'll never know. No unfortunately not.
For now it's a Safeway with a huge parking
lot.

I Did Not Melt
I did not melt
To ERLINE(the safeway girl)
I am positive I will not melt,
I have only to exist.
My love is now for me,
I am no effiminant.
I am not meant to be a gay,I am a guy.Instead.
If there is a woman meant for me,
It was not you,and I have not met her yet.
I will go away,I will live today.
I did not.(melt).
I have sown my wild oats.
I have lived a sorry life.
I am threw with all of that.
Do not look at me like that.
Somehow I will function anyway,
Why did you not love me.?

small boy at a game kiosk
vending machines that smell stale
separate stairways climbing up
to hombres and mujeres
a ticket vendor chained to his desk
wearing shiny black shoes
below wasted legs
mandatory alcoholic in checked shirt
with faded vomit spots
the homeless sober bearded man
Safeway trolley overflowing
with trash from a lifetime
of buses come and gone
helpline poster for the runaways
twelve to twenty one
if their revolution
is done
a police cruiser
wrapped around
a profusion of cigarette butts
shapely thighs in halogen white
outside
the neighborhood dance club
buses are late
people wait
the clock strikes one
