They used to call it The Mafia.
They used to call it The Mob.
No matter how you look at it,
It ain't your average job.
There is no way their efforts,
Could serve the common good.
When my mom and dad were young,
Their members were called Hoods.
Then they became Big Business.
They wear expensive suits.
If you cause them any problems,
They'll find you in a mail chute.
They've had many different names,
But still have the same old tricks.
Now they're just "The Family",
Their business, --- Politics.
Testing times for the masses

I have six thousand things in my house that I do not need
Cannot find, do not hope to find. I would rather call Amazon
And have them bring me scotch tape, a hammer and nails

I have a fondness for gemstones that meets crazy at the border.
Today I sorted out the top drawer of my desk, and realized this is where
A million of the missing pieces are hanging out.
Laughing at me probably as I type above their heads
Having no knowledge of them whatsoever.
How jewelry gets stuffed into drawers I do not know.
Are there shoving elves that come at night?
Because these little rascals have commandeered
At least two, maybe three kitchen drawers also.
I clean them out every year or so, and yet,
Everything seems to make its way back.
I found six hundred and eighty-two dollars in change
One summer week when I was cleaning out
My husband’s drawers.
No pun intended, and no, I am not a hooker.
But thank you for showing me that your mind
Also wanders into the gutter keeping mine company.
What is that? The jewelry is screaming for me to wear it.
All of you? I ask.
It nods savagely.
If I had thirty-six fingers, I would.
My toes are large though, and I do not want
To even glimpse at toenails I can use as spades now.
I have to go. There is a little riot here, and I am the sane one.
It seems there's a decline of civility in America in most every deed and word,
Especially among politicians and many members of the common herd!
Folks do things and say things that don't make a tittle of common sense,
Then they cower behind the First Amendment using that as their defense!
I'm proposing the formation of The National Catfish Syndrome Organization,
And emulating the trait of the lowly catfish is the membershiip qualification.
Alas, the members, like catfish, have a large mouth and a very small brain.
They spread vicious venom and silly tripe which has become our Nation's bane!

can be savored and remembered.
Then there is the world of interlocked
organizations. A world of missions and contracts
finely tuned and binding.
Is the formation of associations
as instinctual as nesting and gestation?
A leader may be one who asks a question.
Or may be one imposing order.
Imposed through consensus and broad shoulders.
Waits, watches, acts his part.
I was impressed by the list of distinguished senators
from Vermont. He placed himself among men,
orators, imperfect, in history.
We march forward, imperfect in our justice
and compassion. Overriding logic with conscience
sometimes, not often, when it counts.
And mercy. A seemingly irrational, total
abnegation of the markets, rules of war, law.
Good to be so flawed.
Democracy operates on the principle
That all power comes from people
Church power comes from Father Christ
