Imperial Manila As I See It

Manila the Imperial City of the Philippines
It is like a mirror reflecting itself
What you see in Manila is you see the Philippines
There you see high rise glass building
The modern mask of modernity
You see commercial establishment
The breathtaking Mall of Asia
The century old China town is here
Manila is different for me
I see Manila the old walled city
I smell the fresh noodles of Ongpin
I still see the largest Rizal park along the bay
I still witness tourist attraction horse drawn calesa
I still like the hopia of Binondo
The age-old long line stalls of pawnshops along Escolta
Maybe the skyscrapers are the other version book of Manila
And the places I went in is the old version of Manila
Though the city changes, I still like the old version
Which version you are in
It's up to you for your choosing
My memory of Manila is eternal
Not to forget the Binondo Bridge whose ancient
Now being constructed modestly
This is the past and the future
Common denominator of history.

‘Let a little water be brought
I’ll bring a piece of bread’
          Avraham modestly said…

Each of his guests was served
a whole tongue, the choicest of meats
loaves of fresh bread, delicacies sweet

Charles Messina

So here we are in the new year
Throw confetti wishes and cheer
January opened its doors nicely
Merry old me entered modestly
Shook the monkey off my back
Took his banana in place of a snack
How losing a few pounds inspires
Now I can climb the tree of desires

Premium MemberButterflies, Moths, Ants and Bugs

A butterfly lights from flower to flower
with golden wings, he whiles away each sunny hour.
A moth comes out at night, while the world dreams,
guided by the light of silvery moonbeams.
An ant toils away, working hard for the pack,
dressing modestly, he's attired only in black.
I try not to judge, as I consider each bug.
They all have different ways of feeding their mug.

if

If I have not walked in nature,
Once a day,
If I have not heard a bird sing,
If I have not crouched before a blade of grass,

If I haven’t prayed in front of an old tree
Covered with climbing ivy,
If I have not seen a tiny insect fly
without fear of the hour,
If I have not seen a field sparsely covered with ancient wheat,

If I haven’t shivered in front of a red-throated
curious about my presence,
If I have not regretted his absence for long seconds,
If I have not laid eyes on leaves
or stones without destiny,

If I have not walked in nature
once a day
If I have not seen the Ajonc in winter
and the poppy in summer, modestly red bright,
If I have not been dazzled by the flamboyance
of a mimosa,

If I have not looked up to the poets
and clouds of the sky,
If I have not left the neighborhood tired of everything, and posed
1000 questions to nature,
I’m losing my mind, I’m going crazy like a cockroach.
Men do that too often.

Premium MemberKeeper Of The Sea

At a very young age
He knew what he wanted to be
Like his father before him
A ‘Keeper of the Sea’

He married his childhood sweetheart
They loved unconditionally
Dreams and hopes for the future
Of raising a family

They lived in the lighthouse cottage
A loving home comfortable and cosy
They didn’t have or want for much
A happy life lived modestly

Both felt at one with the lighthouse
Admired the splendor and strength of the sea
The magnificence of the night sky
Awed by the stars and moon's artistry

Sadly, the universe had different plans
She left this world prematurely
A devastated broken man
Now alone in his lighthouse by the sea

The years rolled by slowly
An old man now was he
Still in his beloved lighthouse
As ‘Keeper of the Sea’

Each night since she passed he talked to her
He felt her presence and love in the Lantern Room
It soothed his lonely soul and his sorrow
Being closer to heaven, the stars and the moon

Premium MemberClad in Winter

Whirling flakes of fantasy softly tango,
cheek to cheek, or modestly waltzing strangers.
Blizzard whiteout buffaloes moon and starlight,
   cloaking the lovers.

Frozen fountain, brazenly fetching, catching
coins of ice, those stupefied flattened pennies.
Queen of snow and fairies do bluster shavings.
   Breathless the statue.

Snowmen slurry tottering, wayward listing.
Melting, baring, chattering cherub crystals.
Water flowing merrily whistles sport at
   winter’s undressing.

Premium MemberThe Demure Muse

Quiet inspiration, a flickering flame,
A restraining hand with demure's acclaim.
Whispers of beauty, softly spoken with a sigh,
Belies the insight within that lifts the eye.

A demure muse, content to hide,
Modestly nurturing the wellspring inside.
No grand applause, no spotlight to glare,
Has the simply joy of creation to share.

In unpretentious grace, the muse remains,
Engaged in a demure and modest refrain.
For in being demure, the spirit's muse is free,
To yield what the brash, rude impatient cannot see.

Premium MemberAt The Pier

Contemplative bliss communes with the serene,
into the spirit of the placid marine crystalized in my mind.
As the sun’s reflection spreads glitter upon its open sea,
throngs milling to the melodious tunes of the guitar.
Strumming troubadour, slim and rangy toe headed youth
grins modestly as his tip jar fills welcoming spared bills
And to the sounds of the seagulls
gleeful squawk, soaring through the azure.
Beyond the pier the magician plies his trade,
tricks which awe and stun
the enthusiastic crowds gathered about.
And what lovely crowds willing, mellifluous, madrigal,
thoughtful, kind, and respectful.
Smiles abound as though the world conspires for a pleasant mood.
I inhale the familiar primordial sea air’s briny scent.
I take pause to ponder gazing out onto the vast ocean’s expanse.
How much longer can I bare this aching fulfillment
as I anxiously transpose these images and feelings
into meriting words.

To Sock Or Not To Sock

He wore his desert wellies
With suitably besocked feet
As he strode manfully along
The rain driven wet street.
Britain in the summer time,
Ten climates in one day,
So the British stiff upper lip
Really is the only way
To extract maximum enjoyment
From such a variable clime
And to spend hours pondering
Is just a waste of time.
So we wear our Desert Wellies
Ensuring we’re not being rude
By appearing on the street
With feet that are nude.
A man can maintain his dignity
Ensure his social stock
So long as each sandalled foot
Be modestly clothed in sock.

Sweet
Primrose
Modestly
Presents herself
At a midwinter
Cotillion, opening
Herself to the enchantment
Of warm Spring's coming arrival.
She calls sisters: Daffodil, Tulip
And shy Buttercup, to come join the dance.

Love Letter From the Soul Minuet

Her eyes light up when I enter her view
a radiance reflecting
off the mirrors of our soul
a deep penetration of mind
our love language unique
a rarity to find
she mouths her intentions modestly
feeling drawing us inside
just two in the wind coming together
I am hers, she is mine

Cheers For the Janitor

Did you know
At the community hall
The janitor cleans
For no pay at all

Quietly cleaning
Day and night
Crumbs and wrappers
In his sight

He never complains
He just gets on
Busily cleaning
Til all is gone

Modestly staying
Out of view
He seeks no praise
From me or you

Even leaving behind
Gifts for us all
Droppings aplenty
From the rat at the hall

Animals

Friends, animals humanize us,
Whether it’s the fearful doe or the wise doe,
Fleeing from our presence, our wickedness,
May it be the fox, smarter than a star?
May it be the scorpion, which makes us fear death,
Whether it’s the monkey, mocking our laughter,

Friends, animals humanize us
Whether it’s the white, red cow,
Offering us her milk, butter and our cheeses,
Let it be the horse, raised by our gifts,
This horse, which walks us on the beaches,
Or the eagle that shows us how to fly,

Friends, animals humanize us, yes,
The lion, despise all our arrogance,
The elephant is much wiser than our philosophers
Lizards teach us to nap,
The ladybug speaks of God,
The cat distrusts our reasonable voices.

Friends, animals have many powers,
To show us our wrongful or unjust deeds,
They reveal our deepest wounds,
Friends, animals humanize us,
Let us frequent them modestly, beware of appearances,
They know us, they run away with reason.
