Roused by a rude jolt
I start up from my half-slumber.
Utterly clueless I move about
clinging to my pet delusions
in complete darkness of my past
coming after me swinging a truncheon…
I vaguely hear screams and yells
hurled at me some time before
echoing in my memory’s vault
as from a distant past.
But yesterday seemed like a bowl of cheesecake
the food of love served on a gold plate;
but today my startled eyes flit over
milestones giving way to milestones…
Life is a squeezed rubber ball
that retrieves its shape before rolling on.

When one cycle comes to its close
A new one of hope begins!
Let us thank the Lord in prayer
For the blessing of life's milestones!
Let us speak words of life and grace
For this is the season of
Divine recovery and transition!
Darkness can no longer conceal.
Let there be a light in all that we see
In His perfect and timely plan
A brightness all around; so heavenly
Let us view the land through His eyes
A covenant of promises we can trust
Signed by the Lord; made by the Lord
Let life burst out: resurrection life
Be a beacon of strength so strong
Be a powerhouse so powerful
Life-giving power you carry!
The Kingdom inside; the Great I AM within!
God has faith; you are a kingdom
Surely goodness and mercy shall
Follow you all life long!

As silence trickles behind, our message is woven ahead.
We can no longer wait, we must create understanding instead.
This patience we are beginning to lose.
It is true that our needs have been refused.
It is too late for some of us, we have already been denied.
But there is hope for the children, the milestones they shall ride!

The milestones I never surpassed.
Are a reflection of the behaviors I learned to suppress.
Even though I learned to talk.
Fear of communication caused me to balk.
As if standing on the edge of a field of tall grass.
That I am afraid to put a dent in, there is no clear path to pass.
As the other children scattered and played.
I did not care to swing on a swing set that caused my head to sway.
What was left was my feet on the hard ground.
I would say goodbye without making a sound.

I wanted to take the road
you had once travelled,
and cross the milestones
you had erected accomplished.
You climbed up the soaring stairs,
called the stepping stones of success,
but you designed on each a springboard
to ascend high and higher.
I could see your footprints
etched deep on the stones
by the skilled sculptor of life
you had made out of inimitable you.
I could find the carved out rocky pathway
winding up to the summit of your world,
I wanted to reach, but in vain,
for my steps didn’t match yours.
Your milestones turned into
unique landmarks on your life’s topography,
but for mine, I couldn’t find the right stones
to place on the road, walking the last mile.

For our son’s milestones, we rejoice
seeing his choice
for triumph gain
conquering pain.
Thanking the Lord* that he strives well
we let doubts quell
since hope persists
as heart insists.
Victory by faith we do claim
midst progress aim
for special child
notably styled.

Four
police
escorting,
a tomato
thrown at her, still she walks with a calm face,
unperturbed by surroundings, determined
to bring about
a change for
good of
all.

Milestones Toward Oblivion
by Michael R. Burch
A milestone here leans heavily
against a gaunt, golemic tree.
These words are chiseled thereupon:
"One mile and then Oblivion."
Swift larks that once swooped down to feed
on groping slugs, such insects breed
within their radiant flesh and bones ...
they did not heed the milestones.
Another marker lies ahead,
the only tombstone to the dead
whose eyeless sockets read thereon:
"Alas, behold Oblivion."
Once here the sun shone fierce and fair;
now night eternal shrouds the air
while winter, never-ending, moans
and drifts among the milestones.
This road is neither long nor wide . . .
men gleam in death on either side.
Not long ago, they pondered on
milestones toward Oblivion.

If life is one long journey,
There are milestones on the way,
From birthdays and bar mitzvahs
To a graduation day.
A wedding and a baby’s birth
(Or two or three or four),
A moving day or brand-new job
Are other ways to score.
A prize, award or write-up
Of accomplishments will count
When milestones are considered;
There’s no average amount.
But when we look back on the lives
That we have lived or made,
The milestones are the memories
That somehow never fade.

MILESTONES
Small stone posts stuck in the ground,
mark life’s fleeting journey.
From birth to death these small posts,
remind us of our odyssey.
Some people have stones aplenty,
while others not so many.
These small stones tell the tales,
of all our triumphs and tragedies.
A stone is etched,
with our first cry.
With our last breath,
the last stone marks our death.

It rained the first day
It rained the last
Tears fell each time
It’s moving too fast
So many days in between
Victories and regrets
A painfully beautiful time
Another giant step
Once again, I sit and reflect
As the crying sky mourns
I realize how helpless I’ve been
Starting the day they were born

I passed my driving test when I was seventeen,
then I could vote at eighteen, didn't know what it would mean;
my first blow-job was a cause for celebration,
but when I was limp, turned out to be a deflation.
Fashion lured me to a pair of pointed shoes,
making love was okay, I had nothing left to lose,
although I had to wear a raincoat as everyone should,
commendable behavior was surely worthy of a 'knighthood.'
When I got married, I gave my freedom right away,
but when in love, you're still thinking of a roll in the hay,
the children kept me young, told me not to be 'yesterday,'
I was playing more games than I could buy on e-bay.
Tell us 'the facts of life,' suddenly came from Dan and his brother,
I said that I think it's best if you speak to your mother.
