today is a day for heroes
a time to salute the bravest
the ones who went beyond the call
put life and limb on the line
for their comrades and country
let us give thanks
for those Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine
and Coast Guard veterans who
have earned the right to
wear

But, can't buy each story
Tiredness and hardship.

Once I won a bronze medal
For running
Sixty meters 
I wore the medal 
Every day
Even when going to bed
Put it under my pillow
One day it wasn’t there
I think my brother 
Took it.
It was found 
Behind the bookshelf
Yes, we only had one
10 years later.
By then I had become blazê
Gold was the goal

The sweat before the shower,
Feeling weak where you once felt power.

The trips and the podiums,

Uncle soldier Sammie
is too flashback	    far Saigon 
The bad memory withdrawals 
are too ganja gun smoke strong
So he pumps up the blame volume,
saying who’s dirty napalm wrong

He’s got a shaky second and third finger condition,
a LSD (long standing delusion) induced affliction
So spaced out on 
psychedelic visions of 
democracy victory
It triggers poppy field

Carved a niche in history with his javelin throw
Neeraj Chopra, the Indian with golden glow
He speared it in his first attempt, cool and composed 
The next was ev’n better, he triumphed unopposed.

Never ran marathons in Korea
   Won Olympics in Rome
   Took a gold medal home
His country then named, Abyssinia
