They existed, they were here
Real people made to disappear
Hidden history, lies and erasure
For them it was protocol
For us It became normal
What really is normal
In the conversation of racism
Of different rules
When it comes to black people
It becomes opposite -
What is, is what's not
What's not is what is
A confusing cycle
We are expected to follow
When they themselves
Aren't reliable
This isn't about judicial rule
More control of a certain race of people
Don't be fooled -
By the fake smiles they draw
This is not societal
This is purely individual
If it wasn't, their morals would be total
The system of law -
Would be equal
However that is not the case at all
When eradication is their goal
It's why they deny their history of violence
It's why they bury our stories in silence
It's why they bleach the stains of their hate
It's why they burn our bodies to rid of their guilt
It's why they drown our voices in the ocean of their lies
It's why our history books are empty of our ink - just the erasure of our names
Our dreams, our callings and our reason for being
We need to hold fast to them if success we hope to be seeing
For if we lose our dreams, those core longings that help us to cope
We'll be like a bird with a broken wing flightless and without hope
We won't be able to realize our full potential and we'll be stuck in place
Unable to have authentic lives nor receive God's infinite grace
Living your dream in 2015 by acknowledging the Lord God Christ
As He's the beginning and the end of everything in life
And when you have a relationship with Him you will come to find
That no matter what life has thrown at you with Him there is peace of mind
And no matter how rocky the road that you travel through
God has your back and will always be there for you
For He is the Creator of all that you see
He gave you life and controls your destiny
Living your dream in 2015 by acknowledging the power of God
And having a relationship with Him that is straight from the heart
Trusting in Him with all that is in you
Being obedient,loving, submissive and true
And if you lead not to your own understanding hopefully you'll find
That God always has your best interest on His mind
For when you're in the spiritual flow
You don't always need to know
What God is doing and how He operates
Just sit back and let your faith generate
A strong foundation on which you can stand
And not one of sinking sand
Living your dream in 2015 by doing an inventory in your life
To remove all the rubbish and the trash that had caused you nothing but strife
To get rid of toxic relationships that possess not one ounce of trust
That are like a car with no gas going nowhere and starting to rust
Living your dream in 2015 by giving God your best
As only what you do for Christ will be truly blessed
So let God direct and guide your life course
Allow Him to be your ultimate power source
Now understanding that everything in life that you desire
Might not be what God thinks you require
Just trust, believe, be patient and wait
Allow God to give you an overflowing plate
Living your dream in 2015 by coming to understand
That a relationship with God should be your life plan
Oh Lord, it seems to me, You are a God of pain
without which some people say there is no gain.
There is only so much that we creatures can bear
and it’s sometimes I wonder if You really do care.
Throughout the world You’re generally loved, hated or feared
and there are certain times when You are very strongly jeered.
Most people have a hard time making up their mind about You
because of the trials and tribulations that You put them through.
It seems strange and true to say that with Your almighty nature
You somewhat force people to bend to Your imposing stature.
To impress on them that You’re the Only One they should please
You have to prepare and teach them all how Your Will to appease.
Is it because of You’re being Immortal and All-knowing and we are Your heirs
that You subject us all to such rigorous training to overcome illusion’s snares?
One only has to reflect on the lives of Your so-called True Sons of the past
to realize the suffering and attainment their example on humanity has cast.
If I sound to be a little cynical towards You and seem to complain
how could You be so insensitive and not help me get rid of my pain?
Though ignorant as I am to One Who is great as You’re made out to be
please show a little more compassion to those who are helpless like me.
As life in this world demands so much of our time
is it forgetfulness of Thee that You consider a crime?!
This whole world is a cruel proving ground to one higher above
and yet it has been spoken or written that You are a God of love!
If I don’t seem to see the bigger picture now of what really goes on
then You’re held responsible for allowing this situation to drag on.
And even though You have given Teachers to show people the way
the illusion is still so strong that most get caught and lost in the fray.
Remaining a while here where they play out either minor or major roles
being only a matter of time before they too become aware of their souls.
When after much disappointment and suffering that You seem to mete out
they gradually realize by pain that this world is not what life is only about.

Looking out on a lovely garden
flowers so beautiful in every colour
here on holiday on the English coastline
this summer scene is like no other
Such a delightful picture to look upon
but there's a blur to all of this
in the ground deep in the earth
these dreaded weeds you can't miss
They get in among your flowers
wasting your view of the loveliness
you wish to be rid of them for good
which are so filled with ugliness
Working to physically root them out
is a sure way to break your back
giving you a pain that is agony
that's the price that weeds will attack
One answer is to plant artificial grass
which is a very costly thing to do
so it takes hard work to truly kill weeds
no easy answer can be seen in view
(Just some thoughts on holiday last month on the damage that weeds can do to a beautiful garden.)
Sometimes, me and mine fight;
And I feel like I should just take a flight;
To either Toronto or Morocco,
Or Chagga or even Togo;
But I stay and forgive,
Because, I have come to believe,
In what we call love;
When, instead, we are stupid in love.
In any relationship, we have to tolerate,
Simply because our interests correlate;
This, one fresh in love may not relate.
He has slapped me several times before,
But that did not automatically make him my foe.
In these matters, we do not just get rid of the fragrance,
For it is one journey that requires a lot of patience,
Lest we lose it all due to our impatience!
Once, there burned a fire deep within my heart
but that was long ago, before love was torn apart
Scribed were pages of sonnets, romance at its best
I shelved the albums by virtue of my own behest
because they caused me too much pain and sorrow,
and so, I thought, 'I'll get rid of them tomorrow.'
Ten years went by, but today they were torched
Memories, up in smoke, my poems were scorched
I couldn't bear to read them, or I would reminisce
Flames sputtered their cries with an incessant hiss
Sheafs penned when with love I was sorely smitten,
verses and lyrics for countless songs he had written
Gray clouds hovered; tainted air encircled my head
Edges of curling parchment were singed as ink bled
I watched them crinkle and smolder in the trash
The wind carried my words swirling in flurries of ash
I was renewed with pain as I breathed the smoke
It felt like my heart was mourning as thunder broke
There was a tightness in my chest and my throat
I was drowning in the rain, trying to stay afloat
Sparks fed my sadness as smoke drifted to the sky
Sobs escaped from my lips in an emotional outcry
The storm soaked the remainder of prose and verse
I turned and walked away with a groan and a curse

My husband got a coffee cup
Two decades plus ago,
A birthday gift from neighbors
That we didn’t really know.
It had a saying which implied
That getting older’s good.
My husband wouldn’t use it
And I knew he never would.
So it became the one I used
Though it was not my style.
I figured I’d replace it
With a new one in a while.
But years went by and every day
I used that coffee cup
Until this morning when, at last,
Its time on earth was up.
For somehow as I stretched my arm
To grab it from its hook,
I knocked it down and noticed
Smithereens with just one look.
I swept the shards and smiled,
Wond’ring why it took so long
To get rid of something in my life
Which didn’t quite belong.
Over the horizon, the sun rises
A new day, a new hope, a new tomorrow
A reflection of the strength we inherit
The way darkness can't keep us hidden within the shadows
How we don't level with our sorrows
But use them to further bloom
Like a flower born in spring, new beginnings we shall bring
A celebration of life -
Those lost become a starry night
A reminder we haven't lost the fight
The stars our strength to get through, yet another night
Our beacon of hope - the strength to bring justice home
For those who never got to reach that word
Songs of hope passed through generations
Secret codes with messages
Loaded with lyrics of rebellion
Sung with the love of our ancestors
A way to escape, to plan freedom
This is who we are, this is my people
A life led by fear - stalked by the shadows of grief
An Inescapable life of struggle
Yet we rise like a phoenix from its ashes
They may try to burn us, but our embers live on
As much as you try to rid of us, we, black people will never face extinction
like retching up food poison
until there's nothing left to
take or give
you want rid of the destruction
that never should have been
and thirst for what was
meant to be
but it's all poison now
you have no immunity to anything
not even a memory
emptiness is not tenable
but it is necessary for a time
and maybe the memory of
what should have been
isn't exactly what should be
not this far down the road
follow it out of the wilderness
but stop listening like you already know
(that's presumptuous)
let it guide you
you really really need to be
careful
especially about where you are
and what you hunger for
it's not all manna from heaven
We moved house today
This house lacks warmth and heart
Everything in disarray
We don't know where to start
Things in packing cases
Others in a box
A pile of dirty laundry
Underwear and socks
Old toys that the children
Refuse to throw away
Looks like that pile of books
Are also here to stay
Useful gadgets bought and never used
I wanted to be rid of them my husband refused
Furniture that doesn't fit in places as before
Why have we kept that old panelled door?
Pictures, mirrors and photos of the kids
Vases, jars and canisters some without their lids
Shovels, rakes, old garden hat
Propped along the fence
Husband shouting out "We forgot the cat"
How could we be that dense
The children start to complain
"When are we having lunch"
How could I have given birth
To such a selfish bunch?
The dog started barking, the parrot to squawk
I put on my coat and went out for a walk
