Haiku With Variations (Both Sonnet & Free Verse)
Haiku Number 2
hail rides air updrafts
raindrops crater planet's skin
your breath’s clouds, fall skies
May 12, 2016
Mother of a Winter’s Night – Shakespearian Sonnet
Her distressed sighs rise up like nascent hail,
(Tears blown to ever colder zones of sky),
Where frozen prayers see gravity prevail,
Release their pain on what they think is lie.
These raindrop tears sew cratered fields as well,
While farmer's labor washes out to to sea,
(Those tender roots that split rock - time's to tell),
But impact strips her lover’s legacy.
And with the fall as cold means leaves turn blue
New growth goes dormant and awaits Spring’s lease,
Confusion reigns as her breath’s clouds subdue
And haiku’s calmer images release.
If I am wrong let no one take offense
She’s not to blame, but my own lack of sense.

Poet's Note:
Please excuse the paraphrase of Shakespeare Sonnet #116's couplet. :-)
Mother of a Winter’s Night – Free Verse
Your distressed sighs are the updrafts
That hurl nascent hailstones skyward,
Freezing tears colliding, clumping as they go
Into tortured spheres that could kill a horse,
Certainly knock shingles from the newest of roofs,
Or pound a field of sunflowers straight into the ground!
My vulnerable fields cratered by your tears,
Whether in their frozen form or flowing wet,
Top soil now enroute to the sea itself,
As if the history of its creation were of no consequence,
Tender roots that pried a farm from solid rock,
Swelling into cracks that are always present,
Turning stone to fertile soil.
The sea’s surface, that not so long ago
Mirrored a most gorgeous sunset,
Now a tortured and a rabid foam,
Laid to waste, craters overlapping craters,
Gone in an eye blink, all my love a non-event
In geologic time it seems.
Winter has come early as your breath’s clouds
Mask all reason and confuse me,
A bitter chill fills every corner of fall’s skies,
Even leaves turn blue and cannot breathe,
Oxygen sucked from the room we live in,
My only recourse is poetry and prayer.

Long Tooth
Poet's Note:
It was an interesting challenge to try to write the same poem three times and keep the meaning of the original haiku intact.
IF EVER I HAD A COUNTRY: LXXVIII
for Suzanne DELANEY, in appreciation
(Prelude: CAN THE WRONG MAN BE RIGHT ? ABSOLUTELY !
If only he were NOT guilty of the self-same crime !
For instance, here in Europe, acceding to « nationality»
status can be quite ludicrously irrational: those migrants
even "totally ignorant" of the host country’s culture
and official tongue obtain their "citizenship papers »
sooner or later, while clinging desperately to their
own culture and country to the exclusion of their hosts’- some more fortunatethough enjoy « dual nationality » and therefore DUAL rights to LOYALTY ! And talk tough once they take over responsibile positions in society. And the
ones on whom the latter prey most of all are precisely
those « other» less fortunate migrants at their mercy !)
IF ever I had a country, a country NOT « wholly" put together by
either IMMIGRANTS or REFUGEES, you see, but by conquering
IMPERIAL ENSLAVERS on the backs of blacks and
on those fleeing from hunger, from religious
intolerance as "indentured-labourers », mainly, you’ll agree
WHERE the indigene was routed and rounded up into
RESERVES through superior "fire-power" by the
COLONIAL and local ARISTOCRACY
AND where TAXES and LEVIES imposed by the « Foreign Power »
drove the locally-born MASTER to revolt against the MOTHER
COUNTRY
Until the whole CONTINENT united « nation » after « nation »
to become the foremost mid-twentieth century « COLONIAL »
SAVIOUR of the WORLD country
Only to find its internal structure and economic power usurped
by other NON-NATION constituting ethnies
AND one-by-one take over from the original WASP founding PATER
FAMILIAS confederacy
Yes, then, I’d keep the NEW-COMER from wagging his/her tongue or
shooting his/her mouth tout azimuth - despite the legislative mandate -
as though he/she were the backbone of the nation or from attempting to
take over my « dear » country as if it were their « god-given » patrimony
Even if I never ever had no country stuck together with spit and elbow-grease to look like a pyrotechnically-powere Bollywoodian jamboree

Never she said to me
I like your words but not how you express your poetry
Why must one take the negative in life
Although its the truth doesn't make alaways right
You are so on yourself but it won't work with this chick
Listen to yourself your riding your own .....
Okay you think you can get me
That will never happen okay we'll see
I will never be just another one of prize
You are too arrogant for me with too much pride
I will not be a victim of your games
My love will not be traded for pain
I am worth more than that I will not share
No matter what you do or say I do not care
I know you guys or should I say males are all alike
You on'ly care for one good night
You have three kids with two different mothers
There is no room for me becuz I am a selfish lover
I require to much attention
And with three girls in the picture is too much tension
I can be your friend but I have a sure plan
And I'm certain to be standing right beside my man
Okay things did not go the way I wanted the too
Now I think I have time for you
I know what I said and I know what was done
But now I changing the present to change my later outcome
I realize I was wrong
And I guess I wasn't quite as strong
I guess you were right we live and we learn
And you said it best we learn to live
Now I'm constantly thinking about the things we did
I never felt that way honestly speaking
Now the thoughts of you are having me constantly tweaking
I got mad at you for eating my gummies
A few hours later I was laying on your tummy
Few moments later we were having fun
The next day I'm questioning what had begun
Where did this feeling of happiness come from
What does the future now hold the two
When I said never just a few weeks ago to you
Now I'm trying to have an open mind
As I leave my whole life's destiny and fate in the hands of time
I never seen this coming I wouldn't believe it if it's was only a story
But all I can I sat is amen and to God Be The Glory
These are my words and this is my life
What is wrong or what is right
What is day and what is night
What is dark and what is Light
All I know is certaininty is uncertain and life is a constant fight!
Daughters of today with your purpose and beauty,
Know your worth and stand tall with pride and dignity.
You are more than what you see when you look in the mirror,
And years from now you will realize that you have great power.
See yourselves as the best and never ever put yourselves down,
Find something to smile about daily and replace that lurking frown.
Never let the problems of life make you ever give up or stay low,
Find the strength from deep within and just let go.
Let go of your negative thoughts and all that makes you weak,
Sing a song of freedom and find your voice and begin to speak.
Speak of your journey and all that you want to achieve,
Let everyone that you meet along the way know what you believe.
That greatness is your right and your rich legacy,
You were born to be the mothers of this nation and create history.
The plans that you have today will take you further than you’ll ever know,
As women of great worth and purpose you’ll be as you continue to grow.
Stand in awe of your greatness and your limitless potential for all to see,
Give life your best shot facing each day like a queen basking in your victory.
You are the star of your own destiny with all your talents and capabilities,
Never look behind but keep moving forward as you vow to face your realities.
Not weak as one without hope but with purpose and determination,
And being beacons of hope and change of this great nation.
Never accepting defeat or anything less than simply the best,
You are undoubtedly more than meets the eye and you will surpass the rest.
Always stand for something or you will find yourself sunken so low,
Make the world a better place by being the star of your own show.
Let no one take you for granted or change who you have vowed to be,
Speak up and speak out and let them be mystified by who they see.
You have what it takes to change your situation today all around,
Know that within each of you a wealth of greatness can be found.
You are daughters today who will lead the way tomorrow so be wise,
Daughters of every tribe and nation , stand tall with pride and arise!
Word for word your obituary was read
everyone was there just like you said
mostly enemies they weren't happy
glancing at the photo you chose for
the viewing ma was so brave too
knowing full well that casket was
empty thanking everyone for the
flowers she felt so guilty she had
them all donated to hospice each
and everyone she spat on the shoes
of on lookers demanding no one take
any flowers she said it was bad luck she
didn't need she said she felt like she
would suffer greatly for this grand
scheme oh look how the Knights of
Columbus nearly dropped the handles
alerting the crowd that the coffin was
empty ma began blowing her nose so
hard into the rose embroidered hankie
damn right he's in a better place try
Oklahoma for starters she said she
hated her card buddies were there
just watching waiting on her to lose
it even a few kids you frequently yelled
at in the shop were there peeking behind
the pews asking for cake a few of your
old girl friends arrived in pairs whispering
it should have been me he was so good
that's when your buddy Barry kicked
the seat out right shouted whose ever
funding this funeral needs to settle his
debts with me before you leave this
church that limo ain't free like him
I thought oh my is he serious yes he was
the funeral director wrote him a big fat
check on the spot I couldn't figure out
why so many people lined up to view
your photo it was clearly a life size
portrait ma kelp squeezing my hand
this was all stand up for me really we
just had coffee then you give us an
obituary and catch a flight to the Midwest
shh they want me to say a few words
I can't take it I release this uncontrollable
laugh bringing me to tears naturally wait
wait I would like to thank everyone for
coming out he just called me he missed
his flight he say's will one of you imbeciles
drive the hurst get out to Ohara midway
airport right away pick him up like yesterday
before somebody sees him and you all know
what that means for Christ sakes he needs a ride
The day goes on and I encounter more
Feelings, a hurricane of emotions
Quaking through this vessel
Threatening to toss over in the winds
Capsize in a sea of invalids
Negating my validity, testing my fidelity
But truthfully
I can not always put a smile on your face
Nor can you put one on mine
Feel free to try
Suspicions lure as more trips are taken
Talks are talked and walks are walked
Beneath your exuberance lies a bubbling
Of insecurity I’m not mistaken
For it is seen many times over
The façade of the strong willed
When broken down and torn apart
The innards apparent
For you are ill
I call to you and you play me down
Turn your head and shun me off
Why?
We are all made different so what is it
That abides in me that makes you veer
Away from me even in times of glee
Your eyes have caused you to witness pain
Deceit and lies in all the rain
From that point on should one take that step
You look down your nose
Peer at them from head to toe
Turn your head and off you go
Never to be heard nor seen again
All I wanted was to be a friend
But because you pre-judged me
The thing you needed you lost in me
‘Til maybe one day might be brought out
A fisher of men amongst the drought
‘twasn’t meant for all to achieve
But in the end we must all believe
That the goodness shall shine through
Can’t win them all but
One at a time I will leave a mark
Little at first, something small
A seed is planted and it takes root
But my sadness has shown
My spirit is true
Plagued and burdened every aching day
Of something different
Something magnificent
Respect a privilege
A privilege to respect
But yet
Everyone requires to be respected
But none has paid that price, neglected
That it is to attain that level
But upon the precipice shall I finally find
Rejuvenation
During the death of a nation
I tried to save them, I tried to love them
I really wanted to see better of them
But now I cry as I lament
And sing my songs of sacrament
Until one day, the breath of life is stripped from me
My despair… can’t you see???
Form:
Working past with words of flaw,
winding world and shielding thoughts;
dreaming across the points of low,
wondering minds next where to go?
If we act like we don’t care,
absent minded and one take stare,
bagged eyes thinking hard or just A fooling layer;
There is no take on what is rare?
Meanings given to what is just put there
how actions need to be more worthy to mean?
Your presence cant be felt there
up where your conscious yet hasn’t reached.
The world stays high here
where awareness has no issues;
The body in which your soul resides
is where your mind lies bare.
Empty Empty Empty in here
where I am hesitant to go,
In here is the world of Christ
in here I tend to bow;
In here in here is the signs of an evil
in here is from where I have rose.
It stays rigid with what I have grown
It keeps coming way backand forth…
Challenges and what`s my opinion,
goes together to the growth I could know.
StillDeep rooted and deeper is stored what In here is Raw.
Working past with words of flaw
winding world and shielding thoughts
dreaming across the points of low
wondering minds next where to go?
I don't know weather its deserving or not . But each time I read it ,it gives me answers to many of my anxieties and the first and last four lines are what is conveyed in each verse in the middle broadly. First line speaks what we have done already in the past ,something that we are guilty of and how we work our past out .
Second line depicts living in this world with our identity yet shaping it accordingly. A dilemma we carry to hold on ourselves confident or grow with change.
Third line is about the frustrations we carry with sorting things out and procrastinating things just not there. When we fall apart like destroyed homes.
Last line indicates hope ,conviction of our mind ,finding THE thing which can carry us our hopes ,indicating our mind is not stagnant and always finds possibility.
Take one trying to put myself back together. First tries are always the worst tries, quoting "don't fix a heart that you didn't break" but I'm here. Fixing my own. Image, picture me imagining myself in a welcoming place and then take me out and put me on the rocks. Darkness speaks to me on volume hundred, so did you when you told me that the door of departure isn't for you but you arrived in the same door and spent hours deciding whether to turn back or go straight in and still weren't done till I pulled you in. You never voluntarily comforted me until I... took your hands and wrapped them around myself and forced you into saying "it's going to be okay". When there are still no signs of okay near. Each night, anxiety sweeps me and my emotions together to an amusement park called inferno. Where the fire feels beautiful and your eyes feel real after watching yourself burn, I mean we've been doing that for quiet some time now. Can I rest my head on your chest?
Take 2 trying to tell myself that I am better than yesterday when I know that each day feels the same. Without you around. All I do is shiver and question myself till sadness, and then decide to hop off the bus and walk to happiness where the same bus of sadness always finds a way of hitting me. "I am tired" is my favorite song to sing when "just sleep" is yours and I thought you knew me better than I knew myself, I thought you knew that sleep isn't for the broken-tired and it's only for the tired-tired. But you tell me now that you don't have time for my conspiracy theories when you'd draw unicorns under my name and thank with a forehead kiss. Take 2 trying to tell myself that I am better than yesterday when the 2nd takes are the riskiest.
Dear self, I am sorry for these many takes that never worked for us, that never protected us or loved us, just kept on teaching us the same thing over and over again. Wearing our misery, well at least we got brainwashed in style.
SHE'S MY CHOICE AND MY CROSS.
You told me beauty is merely skin deep
Wasn't that the reason I wooed her in the first place
Said it doesn't cook afang soup
I've not forgotten my way to mama put
You said she doesn't respect my mother
Excuse me don't make that sound like murder
Forget graduate Tinuke
I prefer beautiful unschooled Amanda
Even though she can't prepare amala
You said she's not intelligent
She does what I like and she's so efficient
Who said she's not sound
Have you heard her bedroom sound
She is not of classy source
But she's sassy and I dey enjoy her ponmo sauce
That she is mentally scanty is mere rumour
Even if she is, I enjoy the momentary humour
Who even needs that educated feminist
I have had enough troubles with chemistry
She can't speak fluently in the crowd
You need to see her in bed so succulent and loud
If you say she's crude and lousy
Excuse me sister , crude oil get value pass kerosene
Say my wife no go school
But she sabi hold spoon
Asking who will help my kids with their assignment
How that one take be your concernment
When we have kids we'll make arrangement
You dey tell me say I no get sense
Sister, you no dey see well go wear your contact lens
You claim she's using juju on me
But I'm enjoying the fufu she gives to me
You claim she's full of violence
You're wrong she doesn't just like pretence
Though she slapped me once in the open
It was because I burnt the food in the oven
That won't make our love to be broken
Now she's fat and won't hit the gym
It's OK Yoruba men don't like them slim
She's daft and can't stand a mental debate
Who even likes a wife that argues
If she ties wrapper round her chest
She doesn't want men to covet
If she was born of parents of colourful poverty
I've acquired the asset and the liability
Right now she's my sole property
Say all you want about her
She's my choice and my cross

Spare the noose - let one live!
Just moments and life's gone,
for the lives one hack
and for it never to come back!
Isn't justice flawed with 'glee' to adorn?
The noose has a strong say
and so do the bullet!
Can one take a call with ballet,
to snatch a beautiful life away?
So easy to take than to give -
easy to take a tooth for a tooth
and eye for an eye ! Won't it soothe,
to keep a person alive?
If a single person's decision
that took life is wrong,
so, will be - a collective throng!
Can justice be seen in 'retaliation'?
Civilisations claim to civilise -
by deliberately inflicting pain
and causing agony only to gain!
How is it an attempt to harmonise?
Taking life by force in a system,
meticulously planned
and with the gallows manned -
Who rests authority for any such dictum?
Rules are guidelines laid by the man,
for the man - for humanity to steer,
itself to sheer and for some to fear!
Gives no right to kill - ain't it time to ban?
And how qualified, a Judge,
to ascertain the quantum?
Doesn't outcomes of a post-mortem,
reveal their susceptibility to fudge?
What is travesty, if this is not?
In a civil world with respect for life,
survival - a day-to-day strife!
Isn't this for sure - an ugly face of human rot?
Life formed is by its own will,
from Life by life's own choice,
and not by any fancy voice!
Why plague it with collective ill?
Look at corrective steps instead,
even incarceration till death,
or community service till end cometh!
Kill for a kill will only make hatred spread!
Executing executions even on ones own self,
when all the wrongs to right with might,
fall flat on the face and not worth a fight!
Won't condoning surge from deep within the 'Self'?
Find space in thy heart to forgive!
Religion that imparts killing as a tool,
of course paves way to 'paradise for a fool'!
Can't retributive justice be seen by letting one live?
