Wars That Fight Against Themselves

I hesitated
And the world collapsed under my supervision
Some people rip open scars for romance
But I'm sweating like a sprinkler head at the chance
Is it time to wear a cape and save the day?
Or are the only images I could conjure, the TV waves?
Besides, watching someone be a hero is almost as good as actually being one
I'm a walking tape recorder of flirty whispers you used to shower me with
But what happened to it?

You left your smiles under abandoned highways
If not all who wander are lost,
Then what does that make you?
Lost in the ability to wander through ambivalent feelings
For a rapacious man of many clandestine manic lines I call poetry
Pick up a pen and map a trail of ink through a lost art
and you'll see what I mean

Am I the teacher if I'm proctoring a test?
Or am I the student cause I haven't mastered this yet?
But where did it go?
You tied a rope around those words and left them hung
The verbal sequencing of dripping roses off the tongue

Your sockets went wide like alligator eyes
And did you think I wouldn't notice the crackling of your voice when you said goodbye?
Like the sound of burning wood
Are you made of stone?
Your voice traveled fields, but still you stood
Am I made of glass?
because my aching bones, you see right through
You left your smiles under abandoned highways
That are more overgrown than my sense of responsibility to protect you

But why did it change so subtly?
And if not meticulously,
Then why did it falter so innocently?
The crusade of romantic fiction that flutters off your willing tongue
That's meant for me
I want it back
I want it back
Let's write a book of your best quotes
and make it nonfiction
You poked the bear
And so it’s growl swam the sea of trees
and shattered winds
You left your heart on the chopping block but you let the axe swing
I want it back
I want it back!
You're a gem,
And I'm ready to surrender and kiss the ring
I want it back
I’m muddled at the way it ever had to leave
The day you stop trying to appease me
Is the moment when my badge of hypersensitivity
Breaks from my chest and flies away from me

The Perfect Motion Picture of Johnathon and Josie

He said, “I love you”-
          she said, “I need you"
As he was glaring so true,
into those eyes of baby blue.

The day came when wedding bells rang,
the vows were spoken, the choir sang-
Their depth of passion captured romance,
holding each other sharing the first dance.

The honeymoon came and still in love,
hearts flying freely like an ivory dove-
With each embrace they felt the sensation,
of being grateful for each other’s creation.

A perfect motion picture on the television,
a baby was conceived just like they envisioned-
            Another baby blue-eyed beautiful girl,
they knew one day she’d laugh and twirl.

Watching her sleep, they fell in love again,
remembering how they became best friends-
He needed not material things, just her hand,
she needed not diamonds, just her adoring man.

The people all viewed their fondness on screen,
so much compassion and ecstasy was seen-
They grew old and then came the cancer,
He was going to die, she needed an answer.

His final words were spoken in a hushed breath,
“I shall love you until eternity, beyond my death”.
She cried and moaned in pain and woe,
finding it hard to let her beloved husband go.

See this is a tale of a love lasting a lifetime,
a film at the cinema of marriage so sublime-
Conquering heartache yet filled with adoration,
a depiction of a true story of appreciation.

When the award show aired they won a trophy,
those actors who portrayed Johnathon and Josie-
Little did everyone know off screen they fell in love,
a perfect motion picture meant to be from above.

They soon married and had a baby of their own,
my how fast had their baby blue-eyed girl grown-
Every anniversary they’d watch their nonfiction movie,
seeing true love turn into reality, a cinema beauty.

Legend of the Crazy Ball

One day I sat next to an Old Man. He looked at me and asked if I knew who he was? I told him all I knew about him is what they call him in town. They call him Crazy Man. He laughed and said that I Am. He told me he had an idea one day, he decided to melt down some rubber threw in some colors and swirled it all around. Then he rolled it up into a ball and let it cool and through it on the ground. He said that ball bounced all around and higher than he expected it would ever go! The strangest thing is it would always roll right back to him whenever he threw it, it was the strangest thing. I had to name that ball, so I named it after me! Only a Crazy Man could make a Crazy Ball like that you see. One day that Crazy Ball just disappeared and I looked for it everywhere I thought where could it be? Time passed and I went to town and I saw a man sitting on a bench and my Crazy Ball was in his hand! I said that's my Crazy Ball you have. The man said it was the craziest thing that this crazy ball rolled right to my feet while I was sitting on this bench out of nowhere. I picked it up and had it ever since then.So if a Crazy Ball rolls up to you. Your the new owner of a Crazy Ball because they have a mind of their own! That's because they were made by a Crazy Old Man like me you see. That there is how the legend goes about the Crazy Ball so pass it on like it was told to me!

My simple library contains no fancy morocco-bound tomes,
Like those found in majestic castles and rich folks' homes.
But the books on its shelves that I truly do treasure.
Over a life-time have provided so much reading pleasure!

There's no greater gratification, ensconced in my favorite chair,
Than reading a fascinating book, forgetting all of life's care.
Tho' my bewildering computer contains absorbing information,
Words from an author's soul holds for me much more fascination!

'Tis truly a joy reading the verse of my mentor Edgar A. Guest,
A bard of simple phrase by whom we have been so blessed.
Nigh the hearth reading Ogden Nash's brilliant poetic wit,
Causes me to double over laughing 'til my sides nearly split!

There are books by Agatha Christie about Miss Marple the sleuth,
And adventures by Richard Dana during his reckless youth.
When I need more laughs I read Bennet Cerf's humor and wit.
Rudyard Kipling's works keep me spellbound I'll readily admit!

There is fiction, nonfiction and poetry in my library,
Also, old high school and college books with historical commentary.
The greatest Book I own (and I value it for the guidance it gives),
Is my Bible, teaching forgiveness by the One Who yet lives!

I Am Thankful For

Standing here I begin
to take in my worth
So much I have achieved
to date on this earth
My mind drifts back as my
face is kissed by a breeze
Blessed through life, struggles
never being at ease
I have my children who are
my joy and my pain
They have helped me in
remaining blissfully sane
One marriage, but even if
it didn't work out you see
I could never be with one
who'd not let me be me
I'm raising a child and it
doesn't matter she not mine
I love her unconditionally,
as if it was by design
Never questioned any of my
life's major decisions
They've always led me through
life's insightful visions
I'm always learning I've never
done anything 100% right
But I've learned from my mistakes
it's a never ending fight
Grateful for my friends on soup,
you've all been so great
Each of you with your amazing
talent and unique traits
I love how we are continually
growing you see
Each new day we are never
who you once use to be
Take pride in your struggles
they help you to grow
So very many lessons in life
I've learned, I'll never just plateau
So I take inventory of my life,
announcing my benediction
Spreading words of what I'm grateful for,
my story of nonfiction

The Critique

Are you our sort of writer?
Do you write
Stories or poems
Memoirs or nonfiction
Or some other form?

Blank pages wait for something new, do you
Put something on it before you walk away?
Stop waiting.
Open your notebook,
Empty, empty, do you need a pen

Click it and write
A passage or metaphor
And with it
Will you marry your thoughts
It is your destiny.

To rest your eyes you’ll see
Something with your mind
You’ll take stock of your life
And leave your heart naked
Do you want a disguise-

Rouge and bright
Will you marry your lines
Will they shatter or fade with the sun
Will they weaken with the passage of time
Others remember you by.

Now your muse is weary
I have an answer for that.
Come on friend, sit at the table
And see what you make of that.

Your thoughts will be silver
Your words framed in gold.
A shimmering life if you look
Images for the heart
It will sing to you.

It works, even if just a little
Your story has a hole, a ghost to tell
Behind your eye, you have an image
It’s your time to shine
Will you marry your lines?

Thanks to Sylvia Path for her great works. My poem is based on her piece, titled “The Applicant.”

The Late Jon Pertwee

He was a British actor who died on the 20th of May.
He died in 1996, he died twenty-five years ago today.
He was an extremely talented actor and his name was Jon Pertwee.
It's hard to believe that he has been dead for a quarter of a century.
He starred as the third incarnation of the Doctor in "Doctor Who" half a century ago.
About one decade later, Pertwee starred in "Worzel Gummidge" as a dumb scarecrow.
A teacher told Jon that he'd never amount to anything as an actor but he was full of crap.
That teacher was so wrong and Pertwee should've given him a slap.
Pertwee died of a heart attack in his sleep while he was visiting the United States.
When people learned about his death, it was something that millions would hate.
Pertwee said that Worzel Gummidge was his favorite of the characters who he portrayed.
It's very sad to know that this brilliant actor has been deceased for two and a half decades.
He was in Connecticut when he passed away and his body was cremated.
When he left this earth in 1996, his friends, family and fans were devastated.

[Dedicated to Jon Pertwee (1919-1996) who died twenty-five years ago today on May 20, 1996]

"Medicine is my lawful wife, and literature is my mistress. When I get fed up with one, I spend the night with the other"
 ~ Anton Chekhov

She brightens the skies with her twinkling eyes
As they fall on the pages presented to her
Offering her the honor of a poetry prize
To cause her to smile with satisfaction as she will purr

Poetry and prose lift up like she can sometimes
With emotions so pure they bring conviction
Whether they’re about romance, history or crimes
Addressing the affections with nonfiction

Either by poetic vise or prose that materialize
In dreamy lives who welcome our pen and paper
We will find the inspiration to always idealize
The ones we discover behind a life filled vapor

If it be my wife or the love of my life
The novel, the noun, the verb and the pronoun
I find ways to work through all my strife
With the delight discovered when we write down

Our love for the words we read
As well as the wife we heed

Together, they are a masterpiece indeed!
