While Sittin' At the Light

*written for my daughter Erin's birthday, to be sung by her boyfriend and his band(??)

Rolled up to the street light and there she sat
Rappin ' 'er fingers to the beat on her dash
Where did she come from, hidin' in the world?
How could it be I've never seen this girl?

Sportin' a cigarette 'neath the sleeve of her top
Bumper sticker says she's a fan of SlipKnot
Smiled at me as I rounded the curb
Had to get a second look so I threw it in reverse
Shouted out a tune to me as I caught her eye
No doubt about it she's just gotta have a guy

                                       (chorus)

               Don't know what she's doin'
               Don't know if it's right
               Don't care I'm gonna stare
               While sittin' at the light
Is she thinkin' the same thing?
Is it love at first sight?
I'm gonna get to know her if it takes all night

               Chocolate eyes and caramel hair
She's a beauty in the making
               And I just gotta stare
A captivating smile like she knows what's up
Wanna show her I mean business
And she's gonna make it tough

Light turns green and she's takin' off
Don't wanna lose sight of her down the block
               Wanna take her home
               I grab my phone
               Snap a picture of her
               Before she's gone

               (repeat chorus)

Reste Avec Moi

I could feel it building before she even spoke. The pressure in the air, the deep regret. I recognize the look, the shift. It’s strange how familiar it feels. How easily my heart plummets to the floor. How loud the silence grows before everything shatters.

I spend most of my days translating, reading her tone like the weather. I rearrange my thoughts before they reach her, as if one wrong word might detonate the world.

What am I supposed to say when she asks if it’s normal, if the anger is justified? Admit that I flinch sometimes? Admit that I hear my father, incalculable and groundless? No, she’s not asking for the truth; she’s asking to be soothed for what she’s done.

Then comes the warmth, the soft embrace, the breakfast in bed. So I forgive her again, watching her form a trashy mosaic from what’s left of me, my pieces pressed together with cheap glue that never really holds.

It’s not all bad. There are still mornings that feel safe. I stay for those small reprieves, the moments she’s gentle enough to make me question my own memory. I stay to hear her whisper reste avec moi, but I’m not sure I understand the language anymore.

A quiet voice asks if I should go. Give up justifying the cage she’s put me in. Give up waiting for the love she’s saving for someone else. But I’ll stay, if just for the strange comfort of familiarity.

I'll do the dishes

If you’re cooking
I will do the dishes
If it’s the last thing I do

Because you’ll fight me
Kick me out of my own kitchen
Giggling like kids again

I’ll do the dishes
If you cook for me

I’ll curl up in my corner with a book
While you’re on shift
And smile when you come back

And you will – come back
To me
And my kitchen

Stick on that one song
'Bout the young kids in love
From way back when

The times when we laughed
Cried-bickered-danced-cared
The point in life when we decided
You’ll be the one cooking

And I’d go get my degree
You’d go off to be a hero
And I’d wait in the chair you built me
That rocks just a touch
Enough to swing a tad

A smile cracks as you stare at the sight
I turn the page
You still there staring
I feel your gaze
But I let you stand there

Knowing eventually you’ll turn
Towards the kitchen
Just to yell
“What you want for dinner?”
“What I want is to do the damn dishes tonight"

August Sighs

A good bye
I hate to say
tiny tears
get in my way
Your my perfect dream
I promised myself I wouldn't cry
Twelve days
were my perfect joy
You brought back my true smile
that I thought i''d lost
forever
Fighting still
your heart grows sore
still you wait
for any cost
You gave me faith
in life
and in love
you brought back
a lifeless soul
God
and eternal joy
are the gifts you prepared me for
In this lifetime
and
in the next
And at night
I dream
Laughter paints my ceiling
and rings off mountain tops
silly games where you
run
your arms along me
and I am stuck
Yet loving
the earthquakes of our laughter
You move me
To
singing in the shower
and
dance
You move me
to breathe deeply
and sigh
You move me
to
experience life
and to let go
Of
everything thats unimportant
And to just hold you.
close
because thats the life
that i am waiting to be mine.

Corona

Corona
by Michael R. Burch

There was a moment
without the sound of trumpets or a shining light,
but with only silence and darkness and a cool mist
      felt more than seen.
      I was eighteen,
my heart pounding wildly within me like a fist.
Expectation hung like a cry in the night,
and your eyes shone like the corona of a comet.

There was an instant...
without words, but with a deeper communion,
    as clothing first, then inhibitions fell;
      liquidly our lips met
      —feverish, wet—
forgotten, the tales of heaven and hell,
in the immediacy of our fumbling union...
when the rest of the world became distant.

Then the only light was the moon on the rise,
and the only sound, the communion of sighs.

With all the understandable gloom, doom and despair over the coronavirus, I was reminded of this early poem of mine that used the term "corona" in a much more positive light. I wrote this poem around age 18 and it has been published by Grassroots Poetry and Poetry Webring. Keywords/Tags: Corona, coronavirus, touch, union, communion, sigh, sighs, expectation, unity, trumpets, heart, heartache, pounding, youth, virginity, first love, teen love, romantic love, relationship, sex, sexy, sensual, arousal, union, ecstasy, consummation, consume, consumed, consecration, omen, comet, shooting star, talisman, moonrise, moon rising

Love with your head

Many fall in love without
presence of mind.
They repeat the mod cliché
    that love is blind...

But sensible matchmaking
chooses more feasible soulmates.
Kids need adult  supervision
in the matter of dates.

Love is a very special emotion
that causes much commotion
in the heart and soul,
where it has a big role.
Love's possible anytime, anywhere,
and many are caught by it unawares.

But don't let love be just a stupor
from which you wake up in horror.
Don't let love be a one night stand drink
from which you get a hangover.
Committed Love shouldn't be a fad or spell
from which you just get over...

When young minds play their own cupid
To many that has brought heartache and sorrow.
Underage kids dating is even more stupid
They usually regret on the morrow.

Reason doesn't work in a fit of passion.
So its best to love with
your mind and consultation.
Having love affairs without deliberation
is harmful fashion.
Head over heels
without discussion,
with well-wishers
may cause concussion
headache
of so-called lovers...

Use your head before your heart
Not every spark
    should start a fire....

To the one I seek

I cannot write of love,
For I know nothing of it.
So I shall write of you
Did you know your head tilts when you listen to me?
Or when you’re anxious to get in a game you start to jump up and down?
When you are upset your eyes turn a darker blue,
And when you’re truly hurt they flood like dams.
Did you know when you smile, a real genuine smile, your eyes twinkle like stars.
You smirk like the Cheshire Cat and yet there is no malice in your glint.
You have changed my life.
You piss me off, hurt me, drive me insane, make me cry, and yet the worst you’ve done is steal my heart.
I’ve already said I know nothing of love,
This is true.
All I know is that I would burn the world for you.
I am nothing without you.
Friend, foe, lover, whatever the case I am yours should you want me.

A tiny seed in blankets deep,
With secrets that the angels keep.
The first sweet gummy smile appears,
To chase away a parent’s fears.

The "waddle-walk" on kitchen tiles,
And chocolate faces, messy smiles;
A world where cardboard boxes fly,
And stars are caught in jars nearby.

Then comes the storm of teenage years,
Of slamming doors and hidden tears.
But through the fog, a "puppy love"—
A gift sent from the skies above.

The static hum of a late-night call,
Shadows stretched against the wall,
The gasoline scent of a first new car,
Chasing the light of a distant star.

Young adulthood brings the test,
Of leaving home, the empty nest.
The trials of rent and long, hard days,
To find your feet in city haze.

Then comes the shift, a quiet change,
Where roles we knew begin to range;
No longer just the child at play,
You build the magic, lead the way.

Then adult life arrives in full,
With gravity and a steady pull.
The Good is found in quiet bread,
In prayers whispered o’er a sleeping head.

The Bad is a debt that’s never paid,
And the Indifferent is the dust where dreams were laid.
Mid-life brings a deeper hue,
Of skies that turn a darker blue.

The bittersweet and heavy part,
Of holding joy within the heart.
For children grow and take their flight,
While grandchildren bring back the light;

With gardens planted, seeds of thought,
And wisdom to the neighbors brought.
Now silver threads and creaking knees,
Like moss upon the ancient trees.

The body yields, a slower pace,
But leaves a light upon the face.
The graying hair and weathered skin,
Where all the stories of the years begin.

With wisdom as a walking cane,
You find the sun within the rain.
A sage now stands where once a child
Ran barefoot, curious and all too wild.

With stories etched in every line,
And memories like a finely aged wine.
The journey ends where it began,
Within the grace of life’s great plan—

A circle closed, a spirit free,
The beauty of the legacy.
And when the candle flickers low,
To join the wind and homeward go,

I do not vanish, lost to night,
But step behind a veil of light.
I’ll watch you from a distant near,
To catch each laugh and dry each tear,

With eyes that shine and heart that’s true,
Still smiling down in love at you.

You were gazing at me as I looked in your direction
You, caught in daydream's reflection
Both of us wondering if we've made a connection
As you stand with your friends by your locker
As both of us are caught up in this moment
Both wondering if the other one knows it
Both wondering if the other will show it
Having our love listed on the docket

You writing our names on your notebook
In a heart our names, in your mind nuptials took
Me stealing your heart like some kind of crook
As you lean back on your book nook
I saunter over, parting your friends
I fumble for words, my heart beats intense
I manage to muster these words in defense
"You've captivated my heart with just a look!"
