A mottled feather glides,
then pirouettes to the forest floor.
Above me a deeply depressed owl
plucks at its plumage.
Birds of prey are too intelligent
their eyes swivel on lit-up neurons.
Sometimes it all gets too much,
what with the constant hunting,
surviving, keeping warm enough
to kill and avoid being killed,
raising ungrateful owlets.
I pick up the lovely feather
stick it in the hatband of my fedora
walk on whistling light-heartedly.
The owl watches me strolling away
with a very peeved owlish glare.

It was supposed to be a shopping trip,
a time for a mother and daughter
to spend time together,
talking about the latest fads,
and the newest fashions,
and why her mother should
let her get a tattoo.
Time to share a decadent dessert
at a popular pastry shop in the heart of the city,
then light-heartedly complain to each other
about how it would go straight to their hips.
But now dust and debris cover the sun,
as people scream and children cry,
and subway cars are overturned,
and portions of tunnel disappear.
She was about to tell her mother
about the new boy in school,
and how he had smiled at her in the hallway,
and that his locker is right next to hers.
But her mother is no longer listening,
for she lies on her back
looking blankly into space,
a thin line of blood trickling from her lips.
And somewhere in another land,
people celebrate and rejoice,
thinking that God has
heard their prayers.

Star shining down twinkling and seemingly winking,
you cast silvery beams that light the world with twilight.
Sparkling banners coating the sky with their mystery.
Moon adds her own moods as she wax's and wanes
sometimes hidden from mortal sight behind the clouds.
Yet triumphantly she sails into view and gives a wink.
The world turns on its axis as the seasons change
mankind but a blink in the order of the universe.
Long after we are gone life here will exist just differently.
For now enjoy natures bounties spread out before us,
live each day light heartedly with smiles of joy.
Most of all you should love to the full and do no harm.
