In my youth's frolic at King Lear and Pi
all my daze was a Shakespearean tale.
Not algebra, not prose did edify
yet test and limits we pass lest we fail.
To learn and open closed minds to ideas
but I learnt before a fall comes a pride
with a conspiracy one alone bears
yet co-conspirators had much to hide.
For each lame alibi concealed misdeed,
each mad ruse and jape blotted my ledger
but we all do a true life lesson heed
when worn is a cowl or crown to measure.
Comic is the court and jester in school
but better a wise king than a wise fool.

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
Jovial Dr Jekyll played for juvenile Justice
a just jaspered journey
jokingly jumped a joyride
to juicy jukebox jabbering
in jackal jackboots
from nearby jungle
Dr Jekyll clasped a jackknife eating
jambalaya to justify a
juggled juxtapositional
jurisdiction jamming
as jugular vein jingled jewels
joyfully jauntily jaywalking
to a jay named Jim Jolly !
Onward he jumped to a
Jungian junction
Jupiter jocund watching his
journeying joints
journalese seemed a jibe jig
but neither Jewess, Jesuit
or jeweller jiggled this job
So he jerked his jess
like a jape for Japan
Jejuning onto January for the
next jangle of jasmine
No jellyfish was Dr Jekyll in Jordanian jerkin
though sometimes Mr Hyde
with jeroboam swirling alongside !

My trump suit against lifelong tragic tone
Lodged leisurely inside my funny bone.
By dismal doom I decline to abide -
I crack it up to a facetious side.
In each pickle, regardless size and shape,
There is a laughing matter in a jape.
When unwelcome hiccups simmer and spout,
I’d pick and poke something to smirk about.
For every spiteful slap and whopping whip
There’s an amusing snicker of a quip.
Farcical figures of speech I’d pour on -
Absurd, irony or oxymoron.
When on the dark my mindset dares to dwell,
Biting sarcasm and sharp satire mix well.
Last not least parody’s comical spin
Converts my frown into a happy grin.
Don’t sweat to second my funny bone, folks -
I chuckle and chortle at my own jokes.
Speaking of which the punch line in the pun -
And so I lived to die for - having fun!

Birth of the Night
Thou eyes look low, though
I dare thou to gaze on high,
As have I, even now my pupils dilate, they grow,
Despite my tendencies to lie
So, please, forgive me when I pry,
as there is, in fact, no sky.
I swear it, Tis not a jape,
Tis truer than if mine eyes had undergone visual rape.
I have not mistook, nor mistaken,
and please now, do not be shaken,
as though from a slumber thou art now awoken.
So I urge you to look, at what was taken, at what they took
As when your gaze lifts high, even I can not deny
what I struggled to see with thine eye,
together gazing into the abyss that reached distant and afar, oft leaving us bewildered with jaws ajar.
'suppose thou art fated to die,
my good friend, you and I?
For the great shadow has doth descended
thereby devouring the sky.

Memories of childhood days long past
When summers seemed to last and last
And in those summers' days long gone
In memory the sun always shone.
And I remember now
Something quite funny;
Most of the time
We had no money.
Not yet men yet not quite boys
Past the stage of playing with toys
Long days spent on Cowden beach
Two miles away so in easy reach.
And life was a wheeze a joke a jape
As almost daily the girls changed shape,
And, one of the things I remember the most
Was Mrs 'Odsons baked beans on toast.
Many a mum was put to the test
But Mrs 'Odsons were always the best.
These days they still have
Baked beans of course
But they seem to have messed
With the sauce
And what I think
Is such a waste
They seem to have gone
And changed the taste.
Simple pleasures, simple ways
In those long past summers' days.
Poor in possessions
But rich in joys
Just a Yorkshire village's
Growing girls and boys,
And when Mrs 'Odson played the host
Yummy scrummy baked beans on toast.

Vye chat ap toujou rete vye chat
Yap toujou aji menm jan ak yon vye krab
E yap toujou konpote yo kom yon vye rat
Renmen moun ki renmenw
Apresye moun ki apresyew.

Break me into a thousand shards. I'll feel the pain
and make myself whole again, so once more you can
split me until my spirit has been torn to shreds
and I will call out your name; my blustery nemesis.
No longer will I avoid the misery you try to cause.
Burn me alive and I'll not scream for mercy, then
let me be forged into the crucible of deep agony...
into the most perfect instrument of my destiny.
If you dare throw me into the far reaches of despair,
do so and it is I who will accept what you impart
and return the darkness tenfold, nay...twenty!
Then it will be your soul crying out, "Break me!"
For my heart will eagerly jape at your affliction,
and grin as you struggle to free yourself from me.
Horrid, I may be called for this loathsome conduct.
Berate me and the rope of shame circles your neck.

Laughter's healthy, contagious, and brightens your day.
It's pun that's a groaner or joke that's risque.
It's a belly laugh, horse laugh, or laugh like a loon
At a comic strip. slapstick or clown or cartoon.
Laughter's chuckles and chortles, a snicker or snort.
It's a humorist's quip or a jester at court.
It's amusement that's droll or the last laugh that's best
Or a rib-tickler, knee-slapper, jape, or a jest.
Laughter's mirth and hilarity, wisecracks or wags.
It's a yuk or a cackle and zingers and gags.
You can giggle, guffaw, or can laugh up your sleeve,
Bust a gut, or with levity tension relieve.
Laughter's wit that's impromptu or monologue planned.
Its a sitcom with punchlines and laughter that's canned.
It's a pie in the face or a pratfall or prank
And comedian's laugh all the way to the bank.

A genuine soul as clear as crystal
An amazing blessing from above,
A light in a world so terribly cynical
You brighten it up with your true love.
Your smile matches the afternoon sky
In the sun's velvet haze setting,
And it's not a jape nor a lie
That you give my life real meaning.
The lady Luthien of my life,
Your songs make the leaves sway,
Your laugh can stop any strife,
Please be mine for another day.

Fate's cruelty strikes me once again
Her fiendish grip on me had already touched me then,
To meet you at a time when I've already lost so much,
I've already gained fears and even sought death's touch.
Fair maiden whose sharp eyes could cut my soul
What remains of my heart is a dark empty hole,
I'd only bring you a pit of sure despair
Leaving you with nothing but my utmost care.
Whenever I see you a warmth in me begins to grow,
Whenever I see you my vulnerabilities begin to show,
Fair maiden whose sharp eyes could see through me
To only have met you now is surely fate's cruelty.

London suffers more catastrophe
As screams awaken sleepers in this tower
A high rise block with only one exit
Oh, many folk will take their mourning flowers.
Some have made the SOS sign now
Seen by people standing in the street
The firefighters are not allowed inside
So soon it will be death these people meet
Who designed these cheap and dangerous flats?
I can’t believe they had no fire exits
Was the Referendum a cheap vote?
Will we be asked to suffer through Brexit?
These cheap flats brought death to many folks
To leave the EU now seems but a jape.

A nosegay is just a bunch of flowers
The 'Gift' is a bunch of special powers
A day is just twenty-four hours
Lemons and limes are a pair of sours
A poem is a group of words that rhyme
(At least they do some of the time)
Larceny is just a petty crime
Dirt is just another name for grime
To come out on top is to be the best
To act the fool is to jape and jest
To badger and annoy is to be a pest
Taking a nap is taking much needed rest
To press lips together is to enjoy a kiss
To yearn for someone is to really miss
Trying to find the meaning in all of this
Is to realise I'm just taking the...... !!!

Wicked wind I hate you so,
I’d rather sit in ice cold snow,
Your breath is cold and touch
So fraught, I think your soul from
Devil bought
A paragraph from weather’s
Tale, you’d think you were the
Holy Grail; speeding, pushing,
Blowing crush
None escapes your windy whoosh!
Cutty Sark or clothes on bush,
Strutting, cutting, butting breeze
Lifts old maids’ dress past their knees,
Blows the lash from pretty eyes,
Takes the thrush and clouds from
Skies; no escape from this cruel jape
Windy, weather, mistral‘s shape
