39 Buick

I dreamt I owned a 1939 Buick.
Later, I realized I did not,
but wondered:
could tommy-gun wielding
gangsters still be historically relevant
without running-boards?

A very cool car,
just ask Humphrey Bogart;
he had a 38 special
and knew how to use it.

I want to tell bogie, I understand
the need for running-boards,
the Fedora, the trench coat - the pose;
one leg on the board,
the lip-hanging cigarette,
the world weary eyes,
the choice of car - the whole works.

I dreamt I drove a ‘Prius',
a nightmare on a skateboard,
still a car is just a car, right?

Premium MemberLoss of Innocence

Cruelty danced 'cross his stencilled mustache
Sparks of Evil flashed from his roving eye
A wicked Sneer curled 'round his too-thin lips
His fingers like claws bespoke a master spy

Trench-coat pulled tight 'gainst the pounding rain
Stealthy his gait down the dark narrow lane
Alas! Two bullets lodged in his fiendish heart
Real life's not Hollywood, Mr. Humphrey Bogart

     Tough-talking film-noir luminary, Humphrey Bogart.
His distinctive snarling voice and lisp set him apart.

Swept film noir leading lady, Lauren Bacall, off her feet.
Diminutive, sarcastic; played characters that packed heat.

39 Buick

I dreamt I awoke in a 1939 Buick
as it sped into the 40’s,
a decade depleted of running boards.

I wondered
how could tommy-gun wielding
gangsters appear historically relevant
without running boards?
Running boards mark an era
the way hats do.

Then I thought, what the hell
I’m in a 1939 Buick
so every tommy gun toting punk
better watch out
running boards or not.
Some classic cars do that,
you take on their vintage persona.

The 39 is a cool car,
Humphrey Bogart drove one.
He had a 38 special also
and knew how to use it.

When you get to where Bogart has gone
(a star in a greater Hollywood story)
the right car is important.

You must drive the 39
like you’re in a movie
where monochrome fog
makes the hill roads
and their hairpins tricky.

When the road ends
stand with one foot on the running board
until a camera flash
goes off with a flare and a pop.

Pose
while you light a cigarette
tip your fedora at a slant,
and grin like a tough guy.

39 Buick

I dreamt I awoke in a 1939 Buick -
the way it seeped into the 40’s
without the running boards.
I wondered
how could tommy gun wielding
gangsters appear historically relevant
without running boards.
Then I thought, what the hell
I’m in a 39 Buick
so every tommy-gun totting thug
better watch out,
running boards or not.
This is a very cool car,
just ask Humphrey Bogart
he had a 38 special
and he knew how to use it.
Tell him I understood
his choice of car
when you get to where he is.

Some invite my contempt,
Others, my ridicule,
Some are opposite sublime,
But none deserves my time.

Inspired by the following exchange between Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) and Ugarte (Peter Lorre) in Casablanca (1942):

Ugarte: You despise me, don’t you?
Rick: If I gave you any thought, I probably would.

Premium MemberMind Bendingly Real

I wake from a bad dream
Hey there new man
That’s what they said to me
Hey there how’s it been lately?
I stand, look and see

Elvis, Martin Luther King and John Lennon walk on by so casually.
Roy Orbison and Freddie Mercury harmonising with Liberace as the queen mother watches whilst sipping tea

As I walk what looks like on nothing
I see Winston Churchill talking with Audie Murphy as Lewis Collins stares at me

I say hello to Marylyn Monroe or Norma Jean as Tony Curtis politely corrects me
Burgess Meredith tells me to do push ups, James Mason steadies me. Richard Burton drinking with Roger Moore on one round table and on the table next to them John Thaw doing a crossword - difficultly!

I walk on aimlessly as I see Bruce Lee training ferociously. Clark Gable playing cards with Humphrey Bogart and General Custer sipping whiskey with Einstein, Herriot, Tolkien and Agatha Christie - something too mind bending to me!

I walk through some glass doors and a whole world of familiar faces turns to see.

I wake up suddenly.

I sit up and can’t believe how real that felt to me.

Soldiers

We ran deep into the woods
from the other side of the wire
 an enemy came with me.
Stripping our uniforms bare
we hid in the river
A mouthful of oxygen from an enemy's lung
And in an embrace ,
We floated in the liquid sky
Above us the fire flowered
With its thousand tongues
raving in riot.

We ran deeper and in the night we made a fire huddled around it
I sang a song
I don't think he understood a word
He liked it though
I can tell .

Deep in the woods
The enemy slept peacefully
 as I kept guard
The fire weakened
I let it wane
And in a dim light
The movie started
In the forest ,
By the lake
I watched for hours
Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman dance.
Deep in the woods,
We were all in Casablanca

Will Stop Poetry Writing

Will Stop Poetry Writing

Sometimes I will stop poetry writing
Another thing may seem more inviting
After much further review and scrutiny
Read about movie called "Caine Mutiny."

Actually, really Caine had a letter "K"
For new vice president now on display
Coin or chip many places often falls
While other things require a lot of balls.

Several places people have often went
While whole globe they did circumvent
And apparently with eyes will probe
To see where you are on the globe.

Around in circles you may go and go
And like I started saying told you so
Kaine has already had his day in court
Now became a becoming peaceful sort.

Once was a display of dubious doubt
Then Hillary chose Tim to round out
Democrat and party that is Libertarian
Versus Trump known blatant barbarian.

James Thesarious Hilarious Horn
Retired Veteran and Poet

Of course, what you usually throw out
is what you will receive in return. If
Trump keeps throwing it all out he will
receive enough back to drive himself
crazy. What do you think?
Humphrey Bogart was in Caine Mutiny.

Leading Men

Errol Flynn a swashbuckler
he was also a wrangler

Jack Webb loved LA
gave us Joe Friday

Kevin Bacon brought us footloose
many years after Mother Goose

Humphrey Bogart had many roles
his acting on screen without holes

John Wayne cowboy and soldier
neither one was more bolder

Ufo Limerick(Unidentified Faulty Organization)

Echoes heard from Mars to Pluto
Sound the alarm on alien radio
Jupiter cried, cause Saturn's ring was lost
"Repeat" no matter the cost!
Heathcare for all, pay it again, Sammy-o

For Carolyn Devonshire's Limerick contest
Thanks Carolyn!! It was fun!

There is an old Humphrey Bogart film with the quote"play it again Sam" That is what
gave me the idea for the play on words. did not mean to offend anyone. I was just
trying to make a rhyme with pluto.

If you noticed this limerick makes no sense, like what's going on in Washington DC
with the healthcare form and reform! (**)
