The humpback whale is a musical fella
With a sonorous voice that's remarkably "mella".
He doesn't need orchestration
To cause a sensation
When he lets loose and belts out a tune a cappella.

the sky was cold and grey
when
yesterday
you told me where the Secret Penguin lay
in bygone years
they say he was a sight
the avian conundrum
in black and white
operating in ice-cold
frozen stealth
he redistributed the ocean's wealth
some say
he went down in a bullet hail
trying to save a hunted humpback whale
his misty memory
lives down under
he left us with much more than wonder
in the Antarctic wilderness below
his noble three-toed footprint
in the snow.

Come to me krill, humpback whale calls
She feeds on a ton of them each day
Bottle nose comes up through the squalls
Hunting squid and small fish along the way
They are not in competition when they lunch
Both eating their way through ocean with a crunch

Some way from the Firth of Forth
A shoal of glittering mackerel
Swirls and sways
Swells with the sea from silver to black
Flashes white and back to silver and grey
A humpback whale
Juddering its leathery jaws together
With a throatful of panicked fish
For a moment it bobs in place
Then sinks down slowly again
To await its next prey
But some fish get away
Dash, dash, dash
Gannets with wingtips a-black
In fizzing copper-green dive bomb
Pinning their wings back
Weaving, spiral bubbles rising
They spear the blank-eyed fish
And paddle away
In the tidal pools by the beach
Where the tiny sea herds crawl
Hermit crabs pick at morsels
Washed up by the tide
Snipping with their pincers
To nibble mackerel tails
They ward off competitors with their giant claws
Crabby-crawl tiny sea herds
Squabble in the pools of the micro-sea
But steal when you can the more beautiful shell
Of a crab that is greater than thee.

Take me back to Akureyri, sunshine capital of the north
Through lava fields and bluest waterfalls rushing forth
Summer solstice came and we never saw the dark
A perfect time of year for an adventure to embark
Natural hot springs buried like hidden treasure on the way
Find them off the beaten path when it feels you've gone astray
Sipping water from a stream melting off of glacial snow
Refreshments courtesy of Skaftafell near Arctic Circle, just below
As the sun dipped down at 3am to quickly greet us once again
The feeling of a lit up ghost town emanates a calming zen
To see once more the humpback whale and smell the fresh sea air
One day I'll buy another ticket, and tell them, "Take me there."

God's Majestic and Wide
Breathe in an ocean so vast and so grand where seagulls and seashells sprinkle the sand.
So turquoise blue, majestic and wide, homes for God's creatures at high and low tide.
Like the Humpback Whale who sings a beautiful hymn or a baby sea turtle just learning to swim.
Like a stingray, a lobster, a shiny red cod, or friendly grey dolphins who live in a pod.
The Angel Fish, the Violet Snail, a Giant Squid, seaweed, and kale all need the oceans to breathe and survive, all need the oceans to stay alive.
Thank God for the oceans so vast and so grand, where seagulls and seashells sprinkle the sand.
So turquoise blue, majestic and wide, homes for God's creatures at high and low tide.

Flutterfluffing of downy goose
rocks tempest princess port-starboard.
Bed tiers for bride-to-be. Steep steps
of ladder, up t’ward skylight, soared.
Twenty tidal wave mattresses.
Jacky’s seed sprouts into beanstalk.
Ripples of corpulent stitching -
siren depths that bruise like bedrock.
Schlepping sleep on stone-wet pillows.
Won’t Gorgo* make a gorgeous bride?
Honeybuzz of beehive tangles.
The slip and slide of nightmare ride.
The feasible mother-in-law
conjured guest into blue-sea room.
Testing of oars and humpback whale.
Full moon is gold and so is groom.
Oh how this royal navigates.
She’s the sunrise, light as feather.
The salty air will pinch her cheeks.
She’s survived balmier weather.

Gassy globular leap
splendor in chromatic tone
golden brown hues race,
leaping waters of delight.
Beneath prolific waves
A humpback whale
birthing.
A newborn rocked
in mother earth as womb,
discoveries come as sands shift;
The timeless sea has secrets,
she shares with only her offspring.

Which part do you not believe?
That I have a humpback whale in my kitchen or that I found the route to the magical forest?
I do not believe any of that.
Too bad.
Why?
I was going to invite you to come see it.
Really?
Sure.
Okay. When can we go?
We could go now, but you will not be able to see it.
Why?
Because you do not believe.
But I do, I really really really do!
Okay, come on!
My whale’s name is Poindexter, but do not make eye contact. He does not like it.
Okay.
Can we go to the magical forest too?
I do not see why not.

I sat in a boat on the sea
Feeling blissfully happy and free
My eyelids were drooping
And shoulders were stooping
The last thing I saw was the quay.
Imagine when, to my surprise
There appeared right in front of my eyes
A blue humpback whale
Who was hot on my trail -
OK, granted - I hyperbolize!

OFFICE POLITICS OF A HUMPBACK WHALE
I can think of so many words to call that *****!
But I’m better than that, so I’ll just stick with *****!
All the money in the world won’t make her nice,
It won’t give her friends as they come with a price.
She has no manners and she really is quite dumb,
In fact she’s incompetent, from 1 to 10 she’s a zero sum!
She thinks she’s superior…. why? Because she’s rich?
Let’s take away the money and what’s left is a dumb *****.
She will still have no manners, and certainly no friends.
Because she can’t afford to buy them, she’s alone in the end.
So as 2017 closes and I’m summing up my life
I will give no more energy to that *****, the bosses wife!
I’m fully rested and recharged, and beating my own drum.
And a promise to 2018, WATCH OUT! HERE I COME!

Sailboat afloat on a journey of light
Seagulls take wing, navigators in flight
The sun is a timepiece, seconds in the sand
The clock tells no time, it's missing a hand
The wind is a dancer, to the rhythm it sways
As the waves become angry, looking for prey
The journey of light is now at an impasse
In a darkness so fragile it shatters like glass
"Anchors on strings, hanging from sails"
Lifeboat capsized by a humpback whale
On the waves of a nightmare in a sea of surreal
Dorsal fins circle, jaws needs a meal!

Being environmentalist scuba diver's
we ferried our boat out east of the Farallon Islands,
in the waters by the Golden Gate Bridge we ended up scuba diving,
awestruck by the great humpback whale entangled in the quagmire,
Noticing she was bogged down by 100s of lbs of crab traps,
entangled with line rope round her whole body way up to her mouth,
getting our curved knives out we didn't want to waste any time,
steadily and carefully carving through the quagmire of trap lines,
The whole time the whale watched me as I cut through the lines,
this one being very close to her inquisitive whale eyes,
finally freed after cutting for hours she swam around most joyously,
nudging me gently as if to warmly and personally thank me,
In my mind's eye this will alway's be a very special day,
watching that magnificent animal swim off finally free to swim and play,
this great mammal acting so patient and intelligently,
freeing God's great sea creatures was surely my destiny.
