Hitchhike Poems

A Fly

The windows have been shut for days
So I cannot begin
To comprehend exactly how
A fly has gotten in.

The A/C’s working overtime
To counteract the heat
And though we’ve ventured out at times,
We beat a fast retreat.

It’s possible, I guess, that fly
Did hitchhike on our clothes
Or maybe in a shopping bag
Or someplace no one knows.

No matter how he made it in,
The next time he is sighted,
The swatter will be on the move,
‘Cause he was not invited!

Premium Memberhitchhiking to mars

We’ll hitchhike to mars
on a rocket not a car,
so say your au revoirs.

We’ll steer towards Polaris, the north star
right through the center of the milky-way-bar.
See, the universe is dark and chocolatey.

Stars that glitter like multi-faceted gems,
are just shiny, yellow, peanut M&Ms,
take a handful, if you’d like, they’re free.

We’ll dodge the silhouetted moon,
which is made of enough coconut macaroon,
to make a French confectioner swoon.

As we go streaking, like a comet’s tail,
drag a finger through Saturn’s rings as well,
those are made of marshmallow.

We’ll pass nebulae made of cotton-kandi,
and here’s a fact Einstein would have found handy,
the speed of light doesn’t apply to candy.

Sue wanted her cats to see Italy, Paris and London too
Wished to smuggle them in suitcases, but they both mew.
You could hitchhike from country to country, someone suggested.
His idea was a horrible idea, rides were few, bad ones manifested.

They spent time in back of pickups with cows, goats and mice.
Or in cages upon car tops, which did not feel very nice.
The next time, I might have to leave you at home, said Sue.
They were appreciative and gave her their most appreciative mew.

Sight Seeing

From my English cottage
I can see America.
Éire sings, as it labors in my field of vision,
it's drunk on nostalgia as usual.

A great sail-winged albatross
glides across from one eye to the other.
The trip to Ohio
is a drawn-out unmusical note in a leaky
squeeze box.

From my Midwest window I can see
the top of a Walmart roof,
it has a beauty all of its own.
Morning and evening,
snow white seagulls fly in from Atlantis,
a dreaming place that only appears
when the sun perches upon
puffy eyelids.

In a twilit garden
(a place where paper roses
wrestle with living thorns),
time circles
seeking its way past another day.

The days hitchhike on my shoulder, I must travel
across the luna surface of my mind.
One deep breath should be enough
to push me just beyond the city dump.

Premium MemberMaverick Woman An American Sonnet

If I danced in the middle of the road
would you grab me or say ‘Go faster’?
Take a chance on a hitchhike across town
or go back afraid of what you may find?

Bohemian hearts wrapped in map pages
hold each destination’s stamp so tight;
I’m chasing the tide I welcome that ride,
life’s a joy as a Maverick woman;

When there is a risk I can’t hit the brakes
I gravitate to and chase adventure;
Bated with a look at a mile high wave,
man let’s go who cares about tomorrow?

Free spirited flights of fancy for life,
riding rogues as a Maverick woman.

The Hitchhiker

This highway's mine, goodbye to Jayne,
so long, farewell, Virginia Plain,
strife was yesterday's heavy load,
life is tomorrow's open road,
it's time to hitchhike once again.

Heading where songs, don't sound the same,
and no-one stops to ask your name,
they'll think I'm another Tom Joad,
this highway's mine.

Generations tried to explain,
through war in Spain, and Catskill rain,
how quickly continents explode,
but somehow memories corrode,
and now the past returns again,
this highway's mine.

Winter Begins

The winter sky so old and gray
Sun sells warmth on a winter's day
Leaves hitchhike with the winter breeze
Eyes close till coming of summer,
-taking a long sleep

Personification of the Elements – 9-1-23

The Elementals

Frigid currents gather stirring
Mists to rain hail in fists of fire and ice
From fractured magma stone eruptions
Crust and fire collide
In melted tornados
In hollows where minerals hitchhike
Into purple ruby hazes
Igneous bursts into fevered conundrums
Where four elementals convene
In cryptic crystals, intoxicated by emerald,
Fused laughing enigmas,
Shedding molten aqua teardrops,
Where fire and fury reside
Imprisoned in liquid stone,
Sparkling matrix thunders,
Compressed grit in animations
Of clear-cut brilliance
The Elementals speak
In captured eternal flames,
Water, stone and breath.

Premium MemberMy Reconnaissance

Move fast when given a reason to strike,
I go hard become my blood and turn cold;
My venom exactly what it seems like,
as is the firm squeeze of my stranglehold;
Upon disrespect my weapons hitchhike
the nonsense you speak is becoming old;
I’m fighting a reptilian response
brought on by all of my reconnaissance.

We stopped in Cincinnati to see the cousins; that was a mistake.
We are still throwing them out of the car, they can hitchhike home.
We had never been there, and frankly seeing them was great.
But quite honestly I only came to Ohio to write this poem.

The travel advisor was so full of exciting things to do and see,
I was overwhelmed by the list – there were twenty-three
So I shut down the idea of another itinerary today and focused on the who’s.
Buckeye state claims Jesse Owens, Bombeck and Al Bundy who sells shoes.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is waiting just down the road for us
The National Underground Railroad Museum has caused the car a bit of fuss.
There is a German Village my husband is interested in, but not me.
I want to see The Christmas Story House, Number Twenty-Three.

One thing for sure, the next time I come to the Buckeye State, I come alone.
So I do not have to see the Dexter Mausoleum where I do not want to roam.
My husband and I have different ideas and I mean by the dozens
Which is why I am ready to dump him along this highway with his cousins.

Wind, Seasons, And Life
Written: by Tom Wright

In spring it arrives disguised as a breeze,
In summer, heat, causes premature browning.
Of manicured lawns and foliage on trees,
Which often induces a homeowners frowning.

In fall, trees are cloaked in a contrasting blend,
Wearing make up, in colors of various hues.
In winter, snowflakes, will hitchhike this wind,
While we’re stuck inside singing the blues.

But whatever the season that we most embrace,
God spoke it this way and not without reason.
Like seasons, life passes, and we leave little trace,
Think of life as being, God’s eternity preseason.

James 4:14 King James Version (KJV)
14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

Santa's reindeer's decided to strike
So poor Santa was forced to hitchhike
He struggled with his load
But made it to the road
Along came a cyclist on a bike.

Santa said "any chance of a lift
Cos I've got all these presents to shift”
It then started to snow
And the bike wouldn't go
Then shot forward straight into a drift.

The army took pity on his plight
And gave up their partying that night
The Presents got delivered
With the cold they all shivered
And many got struck down with frost bite.
