was Muizenberg, South Africa,
then again, in August,
the lady surfed Honolulu,
Hawaii, where,
by Duke Kahanamoku,
there may have been taught,
and in Waikiki lost her shorts.
Who would have thought,
of all the girls
in the whole wide world,
she was the sort to shoot the curl.
Tho' a novel way to spend the day,
no crime this time,

Hawaii, my birthplace, and hometown
Fell victim of being colonized and uprooted
Those dirty rats ceased the cheese
By the 1900's the U.S annexed the territory
In other words, Hawaii was taken by force
And without consent
It's like the dirty rats came in and flexed their muscle
Much to the heartache and protest of the natives
Those disease-carrying

Petroglyphs

Petroglyphs scattered
All over Hawaii
Carved on black volcanic rocks
Mysterious they are
Stoke human curiosity
Unendingly

Human and other forms
Numbers and writings
Carved by the island’s ancient natives
Long before the Whites entered the scene

No one can gauge
What they truly meant
We are left with guesses and conjectures
Lots of touristic balderdash

Me, a frail, wavering human frame
At late seventies
Walked across the blackness
On cracked volcanic

Naupaka

A flower in Hawaii
blooms in halves -
half on the mounts
half on the shores.

Naupaka is its celebrated name -
we hear there was a princess of the same name
long long ago 
and she fell head over heels
in love with a commoner -
a prohibited misdeed for royal ones.

Perhaps stop at a luau
And  devour some

Feeling Hawaii

I had never been to beautiful Hawaii before
did not realize beaches can be pink
the sea is a spectacular golden color
soft balmy wind raises hairs on my arm

As we walk along the beach in Honolulu the sand welcomes are feet
The warm sun and the gentle trade winds are a combo not to be beat

Autmn In Hawaii

As the leaves begin to fall on this Autumn season of mine 
I sit by my window and sip on a glass of Chardonnay wine
Wrapping a shawl around my frail shoulders I sit and long 
for the days when I was vivacious, beautiful and strong
