something is under the wheelbarrow today
It moved up in the air in a weird way
a monkey? a squirrel? tiger or bear?
a faerie queen with gobs of sparkly green hair?
the wheelbarrow moved ever so slightly
whatever it is, can I afford to take it lightly?
what if it is a kitten, a bird or a large puppy?
a whale? a shark? or perhaps a teensy guppy?
the green wheelbarrow started to shiver and shake.
this is a real story, true all the way through, not a bit fake.
a column of red fire ants paraded out, a thousand in all.
proud and fierce, all puffed up, with lots of gall.
Then a snake, a whale, a dolphin, and a baboon.
They brought with them a storm and a little monsoon.
I stared at it amazed, wondering what else would come out.
My husband was the last one, and he gave a big shout.

Oscar was from Argentina,
Buenos Aires city:
his “go to” word was “lindo, lindo”:
Spanish word for ‘pretty’.
‘Lindo’ if you use big words,
‘lindo’ if you cuss:
´lindo’ is the garden gate,
‘lindo’ is the bus.
Oscar went to buy a pet,
to keep him company:
he walked into the poodle shop –
“how much for a bee?”
“One moment please. We don’t sell bees.”
The clerk heard Oscar speaking.
Perhaps his English needs some help
to get the pet he’s seeking.
“Chihuahuas, dachshunds, corgis too:
simply place an order:
we’ll get a husky, if you want:
we’ve friends across the border.”
But Oscar didn’t take the bait.
He didn’t want a puppy,
or marmoset or guinea-pig,
or parakeet or guppy.
“I’ve seen the bee that’s just for me:
he’s lindo, lindo, lindo:
here’s my money – get it done –
he’s right there, in the window!”

If you want to be happy
get a pet
a puppy a guppy
or better yet
a cockatoo a kangaroo
but if you do
just keep in mind
someone must pick up
what they leave behind
such happiness is not free
it comes with a touch
of responsibility
so here's the news
be wary of which one
you decide to choose

A skeletal smirk at the school door -
the greeter-teacher; 50 years later,
I feel his gimlet eyes at my back,
that leer is now plugged with dirt,
yet it can still be traced in the brown water stains
of mottled toilet walls.
A female slave-unit named ‘Miss,’
She never did speak directly to a kid,
only through the thin lips of her personal intimidator,
a third level teacher who lubricated nerve endings.
I am ‘put right’ by a serial wrongdoer
with a goose steeping gait,
his guppy mouth is a blubbery hellhole.
Next,
a second-tier maniac with a penchant for angry rhetoric,
his large hands flay like windsails as they
slap books and heads.
A last Piscean reflection,
a teach sporting a fish-head grin
as he opens a school exit door for me
while I gladly leave forever.
They would all hate to be in a poem like this
so tightly packed together
like oily sardines choking on the phlegm
of what they could have aspired to,
could have been.

Little upstart, young showboat
Lots of bluster full of gloat,
Been there minutes, thinks he knows,
Blind ambition and it shows.
They say he's bright and tough to boot,
Compared to me, now that's a hoot,
What's Yale and Harvard, simply names,
The constant ones he repeatedly proclaims.
As to the Navy, are we to be impressed,
He only served so he'd be thought best dressed;
The lawyer bit, now that brings on a shiver,
The very thought entwines my liver.
Now as to his wife,
I will admit she's rather nice,
But then let's pause to look at mine,
And tell me if she doesn't her outshine.
So there's no doubt whichever way you cut it,
I Trump this kid with character and wit,
He may be smart, but I'm the stable Genius,
Him all hot air, with me my smarts are intravenous.
As I ponder how I should react,
Knowing I’m the very best at tact,
I thought I'd stick to what I do so well,
While he drones on, I'll just my winning vision sell.
America needs me, not some kid wet behind the ears,
Whose monotone delivery brings us all to sleepy tears,
With me you get that vibrant lively spark
The choice quite clear, a Guppy or a Shark?

Fishermen were holding their arms stretched out longer than a Ford F-50.
Braggadocio stories were exuberant, not skimpy but sometimes shifty.
Great grandson of one had been fishing without a single fish all day long.
When he pulled out a guppy the braggarts broke into a fisherman’s song.
“whether catfish or guppy, minnows even, if you cannot get a bigger fish.
Someone run up and give that guy the reward for the tiniest catch dish.”
The great-grandson knew then they were including him in their little song.
He threw the teensy guppy back, knowing he had done nothing wrong.

Licky butt, oh, licky butt
Lick your bum my lovely puppy
Gonna feed you a dead guppy
It's belly up
So feed it to the pup.

Cascade of colors swirls in a fishy maze,
a tank of topicals swim the watery haze;
as a plastic diver opens his treasure,
what's inside is strictly his pleasure.
Tetra's dream of tasty bites
Swordtails dine to their delight;
albino Catfish sweeps the gravel,
as bright corals do bedazzle.
As bright guppies wiggle, wriggle
and Goldfish's fins flow in a jiggle;
a black Molly races by the snails,
as a tiny crab scurries up the ship's sail.
It's a color-wonderland behind the glass;
flowing in and out of the guppy grass.

The scales fall swiftly from the eyes
And suddenly, we realize
Those fish we flushed down the toilet
Were clever, sentient koi that
Faked their death and swam the sewer
(Shawshank-style, for savvy viewer).
Wool pulled by infernal guppy,
Now we’re walking the new puppy…

But I do not want a fish, a turtle or a guppy.
All I want for Christmas is a Golden Retriever puppy!
You are not getting that, his mother said with feeling.
Absolutely not said his Daddy, his head hitting the ceiling.
Grandpa sat quietly, listening, thinking what he could do.
He wanted his seven-year-old grandson happy, not blue.
On Christmas day, he gave himself the gift of a golden pup.
His delighted grandson came over much more often to sup.

Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear
Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair
Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn't very
fuzzy, was he!
But...
Fuzzy Wuzzy was a ducky
(warm underwater-- how lucky!)
Fuzzy Wuzzy was a gerbil
(naturally, he was non-verbal)
Fuzzy Wuzzy was a kitty
(and by the way, very pretty)
Fuzzy Wuzzy was a puppy
(so much fuzzier than a guppy)
Fuzzy Wuzzy was a packrat
(but don't let him hear you say that!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bird
(and he loved his lemon curd!)
Fuzzy Wuzzy was a kitten
(all who met her were quite smitten!)
Dog: You came to us from the local pound
Cat: An opened door and in you bound
Crow: We rescued you during a freezing rain
Canary: You sang to us when we were in pain
Guppy: Our oldest brought you home in a bowl
Neon: One, two, three...we wanted a shoal
Chick: For Easter you seemed the perfect bond
Duck: You soon took over the children’s pond
Our pets over the years have come and gone
Our children, too. Now, we are alone
Hunters so wary,
Rosco and Larry,
Killed them a kitten-like
Wendigo fairy.
Down went Leviathan
Small as a Guppy
Three-headed hellhound
As sweet as a puppy.
Out on safari
Rosco and Larry
Shotgunned each other
Twas narry so merry.
A fox was a kit and a dog was once a puppy.
Don’t throw a fit, but a fish was never a guppy.
A horse was a colt. And a hen was always a chick.
How about banana split’s scoop, could we call it a lick?
A butterfly was a caterpillar,
A green spotted frog was a polliwog.
A child was a well-loved neonate,
Piglet was once the name of a giant hog.
Fawn instantly tells you something of his age,
Pony is not an indicator at all.
Lamb gives you a wonderful clue so sage.
Animals are delightful to me, big and small.
