They sat in love below a willow tree,
And from afar, they heard the rumbling sea.
He looked at her; green eyes seemed full of tears.
He asked what's wrong, afraid he saw some fears.
I am afraid, she said. I dare not tell.
The vale is vast, and flowers spread their smell.
I'm tired, my back aches, and I yearn for figs.
I'm hungry, oh, for a plate of spare ribs.
He stood and ran towards the sea in haste,
And with clothes on, he jumped, feeling abase.
The cold sea spray calmed down his tattered thoughts.
He loved her and began to dream of cots.
He took her in his arms and kissed her sweet,
We'll wed and have so many more to greet.

We are trying to one up each other as usual – another story teller and I.
Our stories are getting wilder, less plausible, and we are laughing.
Suddenly I remember my pal Gertrude’s story.
I am pretty sure it was a lie, but it made a terrific story.
Gert was married to a man who was a rounder.
He started going out on Saturday nights, all slicked up and handsome.
He did not take her.
Refused actually.
About six months later her friends said he was getting married.
They had been invited to his wedding – next Saturday.
On Saturday he dressed especially nice with a boutonniere.
Gert said “You look good enough to get married.”
She said he did not even blink.
He did get married to the other woman, illegally.
I have no idea if the other woman knew he was already married or not.
Let’s see you top this story, I thought
There was silence.
Then we both burst out laughing.

She saw my grief behind hesitant smile,
Love behind rage that spilled some wrathful bile,
A child’s pretence hind a put-on profile,
And saw honesty under my raw guile.
She loved me for being more than a friend,
Around home a readily helping hand,
A resort close by, not on far island—
Resort, her tired soul wherein loved to mend.
Too bad, two kindred souls when get married,
The friendship of friends seldom gets carried
To be a husband or wife much harried,
Rare still, the old love gets all but buried.
And what happens to former loving friends?
Maybe, as husband, well, the man husbands.

Sonnet |44.12.2020| friends, marriage
Poet’s note: Is it the expectations of give and take that makes a mighty difference? This sonnet opts to end with a flippant tongue-in-cheek end, but it does hint at a likely root cause.

I don't want to get married
To pretty
Every man
will steal a look of her.
I don't want to get married
To Beauty,
She might not only belong to me
I don't want to get married
To Beauty,
She is colourless,
I might not know Her true colours.
I don't want to get married
To Beauty,
Beauty is a masquerade,
And I might never see her
True face.
I don't want to get married
To beauty
She will full my eyes
And trouble my soul
I don't want to get married
To Beauty,
She is a deep blue sea.
And I might never be able
To swim to the deep
Part of her heart
I don't want to get married
To Beauty,
It is a tool
And might be used against me
I don't want to get married
To pretty
She is a smoke,
And she might vanish away
I don't want to get married
To Beauty,
I might be The
Lion slayer
I don't want to get married
To Beauty,
She is a red poison
And might eat my gentle
Soul away.
I don't want to get married
To Beauty
She is pain
And She is vain.

You could iron your blouse, her mama said,
Thinking this would impress Sue’s boyfriend.
But she did not know how,
He made a mental note of that.
You could make him a sandwich, her daddy suggested.
Not knowing she had never made a sandwich before.
He did not know how to not eat it, so he did, but slowly,
because it was awful.
He made a mental note of that.
You could take him to the barn and show him your 4-H project,
her grandma suggested.
She had apparently been growing marigold seeds in a dark barn, but
of course they would never grow there, needing sunlight, instead of a dark barn.
They were just dead seeds in the bottom of little cups of dirt
They had apparently given up.
He made a mental note of that.
Let’s get married, she suggested.
These people are all bossy here,
and they keep telling me how to do everything.
Apparently she was not a good listener.
He made a mental note of that too.
It was the last time she saw him.

It's Easy To Get Married
(for Bella and Dalton)
By Franklin Price
2/20/2018
It's easy to get married
Just say the words, “I do”.
Place the rings upon your fingers
You've now made one from two.
Forever are the vows you've made
To love and honor year to year
A fifty, fifty proposition
From both sides, I hope that's clear.
Sometimes it's sixty - forty
Sometimes a hundred - oh.
Think of each other, as yourself,
They're your other half you know.
Different points of view will happen
When they come, don't break, but bend
Your spouse is not your enemy
They're your better half and friend
Keep no secrets from each other
Truth and love should be what's told
Adjust the halves, to keep the whole,
And together you'll grow old

"Let's get married," you say over the phone.
I freeze, not knowing what to say.
It's in this moment I realize how much we've grown.
I think of your words all day.
"Let's get married," you say over video chat.
I smile, but you're just so far.
Still, whenever I look at you, my stomach flips like an acrobat.
In the darkness of the night sky, you're the brightest star.
"Let's get married," I say through my tears.
I realize now there's no one else I want to grow old with.
I realize I'm at my best with you, and with you I'll spend a billion years.
What they say about first loves not working, let's prove it a myth.

Young people
Get married young
Because,
They feel that
They have nothing left
To hide,
That is remissive
- And -
Old People get married
So Old,
Because they think
That they have nothing
Left to loose........................
And rightfully so!

Hop on the bus
To go across town
To see my friend Gus
Cause he is so down
I know he just needed
To hang about
So that’s why I heeded
And took the guy out
After a drink
He started to smile
He turned a bright pink
And stared for awhile
It seemed a girl
Had caught his eye
He gave her a twirl
Then he started to cry
The tears of joy
Were there to stay
He was like a boy
Who wanted to play
Now he is married
And never is sad
You should get married
So you’ll be as glad

Baby let’s take this to the next level
We’ve been together for a while now
You should feel my love flowing through your
blood vessels
You know I would do anything for you
By now you should know what I feel for you is true
So Let’s Get Married
And Make It Right
We Can Do It
Anything Is Possible
So Let’s Get Married
Any doubts sugar bring them to the table
Don’t say you do when you don’t
Don’t say you don’t when you do
It’s not up to Momma the answer is
within you
What is it making you so blue?
Are you sure about me and you
So Let’s Get Married
And Make Things Right
We Can Do It
Anything Is Possible
So Let’s Get Married
You are of age now and I love you
with all of my heart
If you feel the same what they say don’t
count
We can have some children
Have a fleet of cars
Several houses with big backyards
If you feel the same what they say don’t
count
So Let’s Get Married
And Make Things Right
We Can Do It
Anything Is Possible
So Let’s Get Married

your life right now has everything
the only thing missing is a wedding ring
remember when aunt Louis said marriage is best
i'm kinda scared is what you confessed
she said it's scary at first but give it time
making the first move is not a crime
you know she means everything to you
you said my girls mean alot to me to
she said that's all the more to marry her
then you said how can you be so sure
as much as they need you
they need a mother to
so man up brother and say i do
we've had this conversation before it's nothing new
and just because your my sister doesn't mean i have to listen to you
don't listen to me than you never do
but the decision you make now
later on is going to haunt you
P.S. this poem is telling the story of my foster dad talking to his sister who is trying to
convince my foster dad to get merried to his girlfriend

u say one thing then you do another
and i realize you dont want me on yo shoulder
u think material things is what i neeed
when all iever wanted was you
just a little kiss just a little hud
but now i realize that ,that's not ur kinda love
right now boy thing may not seem right 4 us
but when we'r in love we listen over the obvious
so what i gotta do ever thing u say everything u do
it seems like you can tell the truth
no matter how hard i try you seem to never be satisfied
all u ever care about is who, what, when, and why
everything has change, when it allways been this way
and i cant give up cause baby i refruse to loose yo love your the only man im

You are happy because over the threshold is where you'll be carried.
But you are too young to get married.
Marriage is a very serious step to take.
You are sixteen and this is a mistake.
Your parents signed the papers but that was the wrong thing to do.
They shouldn't have done that, that would've been best for you.
You better listen to what I'm about to tell.
Seventy percent of teenage marriages fail.
