FLYING SQUIRREL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Seth the squirrel was tired of leaping from tree to tree.
“My commute’s horrible! Got ta be a better way for me.”
Scampered to the toy store, bought toy bike from pal, Mike
Attached some balsa wood using Gorilla Glue. Wah la! He was birdlike.
Next day from hustle and bustle of commuter traffic, he happily did flee.
Unbeknownst to Seth, flying squirrels in open airspace don’t mix,
Ostracized Seth was—not a member of the flyer’s club, a squirrelish clique.
One day was almost hit by specially designed spy drones
‘twas Putin’s, for their black flags bore a skull and crossbones.
Fearing for his life, Seth sold his plane-bike on eBay, his flying days nixed.
blue wind flying squirrel
acorns each cheek value pearl
red sun melts like cheese
If you know who Rocky and Bullwinkle are
Get behind me
We are going to skip and hop
And laugh with a loud tee hee hee
We are going to find Boris and Natasha
And give them a piece of our mind
We will be stern
But we won’t be unkind
If you see a flying squirrel
And a large brown happy moose
They are Rocky and Bullwinkle
And it means they got loose
acorn faerie flitted out of the way of the giant tail.
in for a landing came a flying squirrel with a sail.
where did you come from? Asked Cousin Dale.
thought you were in the hoosegow, the county jail.
interested acorn faerie is enthralled. A jailbird!
she has never met one, or gotten to have a word.
she quizzes the squirrel the way cottage cheese follows a curd.
ignoring their protests, as if they have never been heard.
I heard this scratching noise, coming from the kitchen.
I walked closer to the old wood stove and it got louder.
I discovered something was in the chimney pipe trying to get out.
I went outside and opened the door where the ashes may be.
Out jumped a flying squirrel, jumping right at me.
I don’t think it could see well in the day and thought I was a tree!
I was now jumping around the yard too with this squirrel after me.
I ran towards a tree hoping it would get the hint, that I am not that.
Thank God it surely did and it was then gone out of sight in a flash.
Flying squirrel I’m not
It’s my arm flaps hanging down
Long sleeves now a must!
A beagle pup curled up on a carpet of green grass
Peering at the noonday sky
Contemplating the actions of a fast moving cat
Along the old rickety fence
Effortlessly tippy-toeing like a cat with ten lives
He wonders what it’d be like to spend one day
Just one day
As a dog with a cat jumpsuit on
Hmmmm….he pondered.
I wonder what fun it would be to pounce from behind a
pile of leaves at a fast moving ant
Or what it would be like to jump from the hood of a car
Pretending to be as agile as a flying squirrel
Or what about licking my paws after eating from a can of cat food?
Oh what a joy to be a cat!
Then with a bit of hesitation the dog grew sad
He thought of all the wonderful attributes he already had
His master, his bed, his own special treats
“What was I thinking? “ said the dog
I’ve got it made in the shade here with my own family
I don’t want to be a cat after all
He quickly put an end to that thinking
And continued on with his almost perfect life
Never again would he go there with his thoughts
Of wondering what it would be like living a real cat’s life!
She stalks the garden looking for a feast
Once she gets one, she can bite or incite
Gaze into her playful eye for instance
Quickly am caught in her magical trance.
As the sun sets, she comes out of her den
Cycle of life goes on from dusk to dawn
Espoused to live by the light of moonshine
With nocturnal visits of joy consigned
She’s the lower cavum nester’s delight
And don’t excavate her own nesting site
Managing for food and warmth for winter
Taking vantage of other’s living quarters.
Known over the world, a flying squirrel
As dawn breaks she plays in dim auroral.
