THE HEAVYWEIGHT AND THE FEATHERWEIGHT
Poem written for Ridiculous Comparisons Poetry Contest, Miranda Hawley, sponsor, July 23, 2025
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There’s the elephant, a lumbering titan,
a true heavy weight with a heart that beats like thunder,
each footfall a seismic event,
a gentle giant, who with the grace of a ballet dancer
could crush a car if ballet were performed in slow motion
and involved a lot of mud.
Then there’s the hummingbird—a blur of iridescence,
a caffeine- sugar- fueled acrobat, a featherweight warrior
who sips nectar like a drunken poet,
lost in a world of fleeting moments.
It’s a tiny, feathered daredevil,
with the attention span of a gnat.
A step too far, brings right of passage to a ledge
Fluttering at cliff walls, pushing life’s brittle edge
A sheer instinctive thrust, with no trust to pledge
Now or never moment, undermines fear’s wedge
A chick leaps off, flailing frail wings fail to fledge
Featherweight of hope meets a ten-pound sledge
Crashing straight down, no safety net to dredge
Next guy flaps like mad, landing softly in a hedge
Emotions stir eternally enchanted,
each hurricane fades to a black sky.
The listless poet’s quill drips,
corralling every vibrant sunset.
Writing as old lyrics catch the air,
Say it to me again.. ‘Freefall!’
I don’t want to be disappointed
but I know it’s the truth;
Nothing will ever feel as good as you;
Strawberry-orange flavored orchestra,
citrus pizazz on your senses;
Each note meticulously blended,
what a sweet tart of a smoothie.
The next verse begins with ‘Sweetheart..’
Say it to me again… ‘Freefall!’
I don’t want to be disappointed
but I know it’s the truth;
Nothing will ever feel as good as you;
Featherweight feelings floating
in the air are gingerly swirling.
You want to capture them
right then they pop,
translating into something else.
Say it to me just one more time. ‘Freefall!’
I don’t want to be disappointed
but I know it’s the truth;
Nothing will ever feel as good as you;
It’s a welcome free fall you talked me into.
The apartment leaks footsteps,
it’s hard to avoid their featherweight padding.
Fabric and pith teach
walls how to speak;
fragmented recordings
that always threaten to utter
something intelligible.
Ears question,
closed eyes grope for answers.
They abide --- the indwellers,
they nightly rearrange,
whatever you thought was yours
as you daydream of being real.
Extremely Fractured Footles.
Grose art
Faint heart
Write poem
Rhyme time
Compose song
Sing along
Opening night
Stage fright
Break leg Superstition
Big Audition
Ballet dance
On toes prance
Gymnast Cartwheel
No big deal
Tap dancer approaches
Kill those roaches
Featherweight fighter
Must get lighter
Jockey of course
Needs a horse
Happy Thanksgiving
Keep those turkeys living
He records the works of his life, the ephemera
he once scrawled onto the tissue thin,
thinking them indelible blueprints.
Most were fables told to a dying legend,
Pastimes, that were chariot wheels
for his little red wagon.
He is an inventor of sorts, an engineer
of impossibilities.
He accumulates metallurgical oddments
for mechanical artifacts
that have no purpose or point;
contrivances with strange gears.
attachments that bolt on to
only missing parts.
They are pieces of an assemblage
made to represent an unknowable idea.
He structures these devises
on the leeched rims of endless visions.
His minds darkened workshops
flicker with the light of kerosene lamps.
He needs shadows and the gleam of
yet undreamed dreams,
he needs gaslight eyes
while shaping the formless.
Nuts, bolts, levers, and steam driven
small brass sprockets
for the calibration of improbable elements
are his articles of faith.
A life he once constructed
falls apart little by little.
He now searches for stronger,
less breakable mechanisms
to put together, no matter that they
serve no purpose, other than
to girder and frame
featherweight straws in the wind.
The weight of a smile,
Featherweight on the scale,
Light and merry heart,
Happily drifting away,
Unperturbed by the encompassing waves,
Unruffled by the crashing sea.
When I meet that time appointed, after,
I expect angels, a company from heaven's throne,
to meet me in that place unknown, yet known.
What once was darkened glass reflecting death, shadowing life,
becomes now transparent pane,
pristine this view of heaven's King, and God's abode.
My spirit unencumbered, featherweight without its mortal coil,
body shed, my soul entwined in angel arms,
to heaven's house takes wing.
Through heaven's eastern gate, unrestricted,
I enter with the angels a realm of radiance
hued with precious stones, as a bride adorned.
No more the strife of temporal thought, no more ache,
no more lament, no more fettered pilgrimage,
for He Who lights this heaven bids me home.
Fickle feckless floozy Florence Fay
Eliciting no sympathy or empathy from me
Amorous? Apparently with hundreds of others.
Tonight I cut the ties that have bound.
He can have you, I release you, I tell her.
Enthusiastic crying will not sway me one whit.
Releasing her will give me a fresh start.
Wedding vows were pushed on me by her three years ago.
Eager you were to wed me and my money, I remember.
I was in love with you, but you have ruined that now.
Gallivanting all over with every Tom, Dick and Jim
Happiness you seek has not included me in any way
Tonight I will enjoy a wife-less sleep, not worrying about where you are.
Mightily buoyed by cherished blood,
Brazen struts laxest wit undeterred;
And fair nobles her giddy vinos swill
Oftener than mild sips of ironed skill.
Sometimes charmed by gilded gold
Slack sense glues tighter than truth,
Icing to death the latter's warm hold,
Though it be sharp as reptile’s tooth.
Frequent wins heresy’s easy path
Grand crystalline Heaven’s wrath,
And fleeting mirths procured thus
At last become unmitigated curse.
Subtly hallowed by saint and priest
Sneaks warped reason’s sliest gist,
Oiled by figures on oaths deponed,
Sentinels of truth in bold ink toned.
Featherweight thinking finally weds
Strictest law under unspoken knots;
Neutering the former’s diabolic beds,
Desecrating the other's stern courts.
Fallen out of favour
Dovecotes
Of arms
Flapping
The featherweight fight
A symbol's weight
May fluctuate
But the pigeon
Has always
Been a dove
Many Americans, at least it would seem,
Win Megabuck lotteries, inside their day dreams;
What will I do now, with all of this loot?
I’ll jet far and wide, like a Rock Star en route.
And yet, there’s a man, at the head of our state,
Worth many vast billions—no weak featherweight;
Who could have declined, to avoid all the grief,
But instead serves us tirelessly, providing relief.
THANKS to the millions—‘Deplorables’ strong,
Who saw his potential, and sang his theme song;
About Making us Great, restoring times past,
Returning jobs lost with fair trade deals—at last!
Yet mainstream ‘the media,’ despise you and peeps,
Their Deep State criminal, lost to your sweep;
MAGA did resonate—you won handily,
Our thin skin now thickened, by their blasphemy.
In the end no collusion—just more of the same,
Fake news by leftists, with HATE on the brain;
So thank you kind sir, and please drain that swamp,
A patriotic act perfectly befitting...
...#45, PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP!
He shook the blanket and it fell
Tumbling over all trees
Bouncing upon the hillside far
Now veiled unclearly sees
Golden sun behind the blanket
Bright rays illuminate
In straight waves of bright yellow light
Soon day rejuvenates
Roosters crow in dim light and damp
Their melodies supreme
The blanket settles in zizzag
Folks awaken from dreams
A stillness accentuates sound
Or the lack thereof
An eerie feel like the quiet
Before the storm above
As the dark featherweight clouds float
Black as a widow's veil
One ray of hope in the charcoal
A pink colored cloud sails
Finis' Maybe???
waves crash mist and spray
touch upon lighthouse's strong walls..
lights steadily warn
lightkeeper's sturdy
rock home filled with light warmth love..
unharmed as storm passes
delphiniums bloom
their gauze blossoms withstand storm..
strength in featherweight
