The Final Poem

I’ve dreamed of you so much,
I’ve walked so much, talked so much,
Loved your shadow so much,
That I have nothing left of you.
All I can do is be a shadow among the shadows,
To be one hundred times more shadow than a shadow,
To be the shadow that will come and go
In your sun-spangled life.
--Robert Desnos

--Robert Desnos

My One and Unique Rose

I Am a Demo Tape Maker

I am a demo tape
Maker,
Compulsive Rock and Roll
Faker,
It is my need, I pay no heed,

To those who say
I won't get anywhere,
I have trained myself not to care,
It makes my day less boring,
My future less worrying.

I keep writing the songs
About the rights and the wrongs,
In the vain hope
That someday somewhere
Among the reject slips,

There might be someone
Who thinks I'm hip,
The last word,
Le dernier cri,
The new McCartney, no...

I know that
It won't happen,
I know that I've got talent,
But I ain't got enough,
I guess that's tough.

I keep writing the songs
About the rights and the wrongs,
In the vain hope
That someday somewhere
Among the reject slips,

There might be someone
Who thinks I'm hip,
The last word,
Le dernier cri,
The new McCartney, no...

The Drawn Heart, Smiled At Me With Sap Tears

The wild hair of the trees
lay down on the ground.
Others burn up in a blue smoke.
The severed branches in small heaps.
I saw, in the middle of the sawdust,
The pieces of the great plane tree,
Where we carved our names.
The drawn heart, smiled at me,
Even with its sap tears,
the wounded sapwood
a kind of last farewell.

La chevelure sauvage des arbres
s'est couchée sur le sol.
D'autres se consument
en fumées bleues.

Les branches sectionnées en petit tas.
J'ai vu, au milieu de la sciure,
Les billots du grand platane,
Où nous avions gravés nos noms.

Le cœur dessiné, me souriait,
Même avec ses larmes de sève,
d'aubier blessé,
en une sorte de dernier adieu.

The Last Hope, Translation of Paul Verlaine’s sonnet : Dernier espoir

There stands a tree in the cemetery
Thrusting itself up in total freedom,
By no means the fruit of bereavement –
Spreading itself out on stone unobtrusively.

In this tree, be it summer or winter,
A bird alights to trill clearly
It’s sad song of such fidelity.
This tree and this bird do us bind together :

You the object of my thoughts, I the absence
That time takes stock of in evanescence…
Ah ! To live again propped up against your knees !

Ah ! To be alive again ! But stay yet awhile, my lover,
Let not the void be my chilling victor…
At the least, say : I live but in your intimate core ?
