A day’s routine so easily holds me captive.
I confess to mindless, museless departures,
Brainless unpoetic habits so unreflective,
That I cannot dwell in momentary textures.
But January ripens oranges on my neighbor’s tree,
Marking spring’s beginning in California.
Midwestern groomed; such play awakens me.
Fat, lush oranges tumble all over the area.
Bold bright balls, they must be painted,
Landing in my drive, my car mashes them.
With this mortal crush, I breach life sacred.
Yet, once I eat one, it’s no longer a problem.
Tree of oranges brings fruit reviving passion.
Luscious harvest renewal of vibrant conception.

Our great debate is about to start
Over which aspect is the essential part
Of the word 'kiwi' -- Is it that strange-looking bird
Or is it the green, fuzzy fruit that tastes so darn good?
You say a kiwi can't be a bird, because it can't fly
Well, how about emus, and rheas, and ostriches?
They are flightless birds too, say I
You say no bird has a beak so awfully long
Well, just look at pelicans, curlews, and storks
I say you're wrong!
You say alright, o.k -- Consider the kiwi berry
I say the kiwi's no berry -- to the contrary
It's clearly a citrus fruit
You say, No! No! -- A kiwi grows on a shrub or a vine
I concede that may seem like a grape or raspberry
But whoever heard of 'Vintage Kiwi Wine?'
You shake your head and you say
It's rightly called the 'Chinese gooseberry'
While I assure you it's got more vitamin C
Than an orange inside a pail
Of straw, black, blue, and elderberries
Thus concludes our debate
Wasn't it great?
Maybe I won -- Maybe it was you
But when we sat down to eat some kiwi
~ Away it flew!

You are round and bright in your orange suit.
Sweet and at times bitter as you are a citrus fruit.
With painted eyes, nose and mouth you have style.
So you can look at kids with a funny smile.
Jugglers play ball with you as you dance around in a twist.
Satsuma, Mandarin, and Clementine love you as you’re earnest.
You please us with your delicious juices as sun rises.
Vitamin C enriched so we resist disease as we drink your prize.
Your name came from Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language.
You’re cherished by the Chinese for thousands of years---your heritage.
You are the colour of the morning sky of sun’s orange hue.
You bless humanity with your flesh---always on cue.
You’re now part of my fruit collection as you sit proudly on my kitchen table.
Plum nudges you to roll while strawberry wants you as marmalade in this tale.
Other fruits want to grapple with you so you can have a merry roll.
Banana has designs on you and is trying to find your pretty mole!
Alas that won’t be as now kids are playing ball with you
But by end of day, one of them will be black and blue.

ORDINARY ORANGE
Flickering flames within a fire,
the Monarch butterfly,
a burst of juicy citrus fruit,
a slice of pumpkin pie.
The California poppy,
a goldfish swimming round,
lava rock, a hearty veg
growing underground.
A terra cotta planter,
an oriole flying high,
a new day dawns, this color orange
accents a crimson sky.
Important too, it’s vibrant hue
marks a danger zone,
so lets celebrate the shades of orange
from peach to copper tone.

Most importantly it’s vibrant hue,
will mark danger zone,
so let’s celebrate the shades of orange

Healthy state before, trip across the world,
all in the name of duty.
Called away from the safety of home,
doing the job I signed up for.
Safe return home, or so we thought.
All the while, harboring a demon within.
Sleeping in the darkness, hiding, waiting,
finally rearing It's ugly head.
Now I fight.
Struggle to understand this demon of mine,
scarred for life. I have changed.
I can no longer do my will.
I live by His rules.
How can such a small entity control so much.
A miniscule thing made more powerful
by dangerous men in white coats,
working for the European devil
with his hammer and anvil.
All sold to the highest bidder.
This one, know as Satan's Hand
originating in the fertile crescent.
Our Man said none were found,
but slowly, this Wills Millions to Die
and he can't retract words
once spoken aloud,
therefore I am caught in between.
I fight this demon alone
scarred for life, he controls me.
I do what I can
and pray for future hope, future aid.
How long will I wait?
Like the boys afflicted by the secret citrus fruit.
I hope not.
I pray for fast action by our Man.
Dreams, I know, but without it,
my struggle is for naught
