While the ballots are disseminated,
why not feed two birds with one feeder?

Do this Do that
pulled in one direction
then another and another
overwhelmed
under attack

comes from all sides
a To Do list long as my arm
one at a time
knocking off
a few things
here and there
nothing earth shattering
but with consistency

keeping at it
with each checkmark
one less project
looms over my head

with each sigh
I can almost breathe
and forget the constancy
of me under attack

close enough to bite —
a familiar face.
his fingertips loaded and extended.
she shivers.

black powder on her lips —
silent scream of rigor mortis.

apparitions in black — husbands of widows,
siblings of sisters, single friends,
sons of mothers and fathers...

a black powder line drawn around each victim —
shut-ins for the night...texting and ringing of
childhood homes.

dark mascara drips down, as one by one
a checkmark mars the paperwork,
and scarecrows slip off their poles,
hitting the hard metal ground.

in handcuffs, the thief carries the sundry souls
under his eyelids.

the sandpaper scratches — his demonic eyes —
like hell.

Dress in our best
Ready for their big day
Tux and gown
Hair up and bejeweled
Pose showing our pearly whites
Sunshine ordered as part of the decor
Cameraman getting all his shots

Bride and groom
Going about their day
Perfect blend of stress and bliss

242

Your name is 242

Says the yellow paper
At the end of a patient pen
And ballpoint Checkmark
Readied with fingers, anxious
 to continue shuffling
A deck of cards
Of which I am one
Or 242
But in any case,
zero

Because with one to ten on a scale
 I usually fail around
The part where I protest
That my dress fits me all wrong
And when this lipstick, which is present for
Each song, each cursory choice
tries to make the air
A bit more pleasant
and make me seem
A bit more forgetful
Instead of consciously wrong-
THAT
Is where I fall

My heart is a little less numb
and little more dumb than it should be
But I guess a couple more hits
Is always what it will be
And a couple more scars
Will make me what I should be

I don’t want to be lovely
I want you to love me
Even half-heartedly I’ll stay
If for a moment I won’t be zero
But a name under your
Ballpoint hand

But I am only lovely
on the tip of a needle
And each side is sharp
So, where the sharp side may fall
So will I, blood in my eyes pounding
To get out, but there only be

242
 tears
To cry

he was so professional she was so mean he was completely subservient to her
she was so unclean together they licked the platter clean when money ruled the
earth it seemed to be a certain fact that people are at lack to have a say when
money ruled the day the people suffered and cried bread some found in trash the
poor man cries his cries reminds me of inky flotsam and she was seldom seen
they rule the inner sanctum as they scream and scream they torture freedom and
hide the caviar underneath the cavernous pillow they munch on nothing much
they tweed they maw they fight the ignoramus they eat the bread of queen and
kingly night repast a fraction of the cost at last a brand new management to bring
ungodly gain a checkmark and a balancement the answer lies in forty paces forty
winks the desert beckons the cactus drinks the muck puddle lies with flies and
flying things to dissipate slowly now in winter grace as angels wing in air.
