Affliction

AFFLICTION?
It is said of young physicians when they first set out to learn
All the symptoms and conditions that known illnesses convey
They perceive these indications each one causing more concern
‘Til they make the diagnosis to their shock and their dismay
They arrive at the conviction
They themselves have the affliction

Now when learned academics write a thesis that proclaims
All white people are infected with a racism endemic
Filled with symptom and with signs supporting dogma that defames
Fragile folk are then persuaded by this plausible polemic
And arrive at the conviction
We’re all guilty of affliction

What could be more direful to survival of this blessed sphere
Than wild nature, once benign, by human feckless acts betrayed!
“See the wild fires, melting icebergs and the hurricanes!”- we hear
Computer forecasts yet sole factors we can truly call ‘man made’
Should we therefore have conviction
Of a terminal affliction?

Data now in a profusion never seen before these times
Flood our eyes and ears and minds in ‘monu-mental’ mind-bate range
Those with focussed strong agenda choose a menu that defines
And steers us, if undiscerning and from reason then estranged
To unquestioning conviction
THAT in truth would be affliction

DID SOMEONE SAY DELETE GOD

I've heard it said that Democrats want God deleted
But judging from what the Bible says
God, in His sovereignty, cannot be defeated

I speak only for myself, though others may agree
I'll watch these undiscerning political nuts
As they one day take a knee

It won't be take a knee to a flag or any such thing
It will be that every knee shall bow
And every tongue confess, Jesus is King of Kings

And the idea to defeat God will serve them well
As they hear these words, depart from me
For an eternity to be spent in hell

Defeating God is a dangerous road to take
For all who choose to do so
Will spend eternity in a fiery lake

Her Stride

A self-assured progressive projectile
Locked on its target like a heat seeking missile
Confident, a smile all the while
Marvellous like a polished marble tile
Strong, but fragile
An ambiguous profile
To remain unresolved, a mystery file
Trendy, always in style
Smooth like a silky textile
A lioness on the prowl
Hear her roar, fear her growl
The feminization of a species
A natural selection of beauties
A temper so feline
A manner so divine
An awesome design
A perfect being born to reign
A mind map that he can neither navigate nor define
A mosaic that only He can refine
Provoked, her stride is heavy
It is a charge to envy
Her walk is easy
It can mislead as lazy
It is a march through boundaries and norms
A journey of a million no’s and no yes’s
An irrational continuation to an unknown destination
A premonition to know, to sacrifice for the unborn generation
A hope that peace will come no matter how dark the skies
The intuition to continue to love when hate fills the air with cries
An incessant knock on that closed door
The insatiable hunger to always wanting to know
A road laden with thorns and paved with broken glass
A never ending test in an unassailable class
At times, it is a burdened conquest
A seemingly impossible quest
At the end of which the rewards are already taken
A rigged race, the winner already chosen
The credit to someone less deserving
Her pain from a tradition undiscerning
But she’s unstoppable like a silver bullet
Hitting with penetrating impact
Her dreams riding on the tail of a comet
Untouchable like a rocket to a far away planet
Decorated, an achievement in perseverance
An acknowledgement of her undeniable presence
The order of a female monarchy
Female atop the hierarchy
A proven recipe
His failed conspiracy

I Held Your Hands, You Did Not Pray

I held your hands, you did not pray
Your silence withered me like a wreath
I smiled at you inscrutable like a new day
And waited on time for soon defeat

When love has lost its voice it has no will
For nothing sings inside a desolate heart
The eyes are drooping limbs in winter’s chill
The bodies like ships so slowly drift apart

You are enticed by gardens with more gold
My neighbor’s once watered dying grass
Where artificial flowers bloomed in the cold
Undiscerning I competed, I spent and lost

Resisting winter to boast my unfading rose
Foolish in love then, and phony you the more
Love is all we should be, nothing that we pose
We make the gift alone who knew what freedom was before.

Fate of the Faithful

The orb of light that once shone through
Confounding the darkness permeating time;
Now the boiling pot of a dark brew
Of a sinful repulsive and slimy grime

The lighthouse that once guided ships
With the luminescence of the sacred truth
By greed and falsehood, in perpetual eclipse
Its every beam, we must now doubt the sooth

The holy place of service and congregation
Where redemption was taught to be by grace
Now, a market place for trading salvation;
The wealthiest, the swiftest in the race

Now earthling men are elevated
To gods, by their undiscerning sheep
Powers of the Most High are arrogated
By them to keep their sheep in perennial sleep

The devil and the bride; now hand in hand
Their adultery reeking its awful stench
Magic and miracles take a joint stand
To further ensnare the confused wench

The spiritual works of the gullible faithful
Whose toil; weekly exploited for personal gain
May in the end weep, rather than be cheerful
As their life long labour, may have been in vain.

Blinded

Fool's Gold
Show up in my life
So beautiful, wholesome
Like a angelic magician
Turned my cloudiness to lightness

Set my psyche to tenfold
Shaped me to feel unbroken
Cherished my flaws in all
Vertiginous by your tenderness
Sent my guard out the window

Sunlight turned into murkiness
Phosphorescent rotate to duskiness
Laughter looped to despair
Heart became disgusted
Soul tie turned unequally yoke

True colors revealed itself
Narcissistic knock on the door
Almighty dollar was the goal
Emotions was a put on
Undiscerning steered to deception

Hey Pete

hey pete
by Michael R. Burch

hey pete,
it's baseball season
and the sun ascends the sky,
encouraging a schoolboy's dreams
of winter whizzing by;
go out, go out and catch it,
put it in a jar,
set it on a shelf
and then you'll be a Superstar.

When I was a boy, Pete Rose was my favorite baseball player; this poem is not a slam at him, but rather an ironic jab at the term "superstar." Unlikely Mike
by Michael R. Burch

I married someone else’s fantasy;
she admired me despite my mutilations.

I loved her for her heart’s sake, and for mine.
I hid my face and changed its connotations.

And in the dark I danced—slight, Chaplinesque—
a metaphor myself. How could they know,

the undiscerning ones, that in the glow
of spotlights, sometimes love becomes burlesque?

Disfigured to my soul, I could not lose
or choose or name myself; I came to be

another of life’s odd dichotomies,
like Dickey’s Sheep Boy, Pan, or David Cruse:

as pale, as enigmatic. White, or black?
My color was a song, a changing track.

Head In the Soon-To-Be Desert Sand

Climate churning, quite concerning.
   We go right on oil-burning,
Science spurning, undiscerning,
   Old-time habits not unlearning,
Profits earning, blindly yearning
   For our carefree youth's returning.
.....Little hope for tables turning.....

Titanium Roses In Her Pocket

And later that evening she sauntered
along the halls of the cathedral
with callous egoism jingling in her pocket
whilst chuckling of undiscerning humor
I know not the definition of such folly
though strangely I must attest that I weltered in rapture
When she evanesced with no concern for a colloquy

Dog

Your short shaggy stumps
That graze the ground
Of dead leaves and dirt
Your wet, black snout that smothers the soil with smell
Your empty eyes that dart from where your first patch of paw leads,
And the last follows
Your contained existence
From here to there
And back again
What else have you?
This moment’s piss,
That last moment’s slumber
The thoughtless then and now dance you do
Without consideration for what the final performance may look like
And it looks like nothing
Except for all your futile nows
That you execute with reflexive precision
Your hind leg in the air
Your hollow pug face stare
Your undiscerning bladder flows
On some beckoning bark
Then you trot off
In circles
Much like me,
Coming and pissing and leaving
From tree to tree

Lauding the Creative Minds

When I can't sleep my creativity is at its highest peak...
I write poems for friends who are alone and need solace,
all my senses are at work, sharper than the owls by of the creek;
my restless fingers find an outlet and holding the pen,
they transfer the heart's emotions to the blank pad!
And I give them life, to define them through my grace...

Words flow from this exploding brain;
and its expressive lines are extracted,
like the juice from the sweetest grapes,
to be on everybody's table for a delightful drink!
Inspiration, ignite my stagnant imagination:
to give my verses a unique meter and rhyme...
that they may stand out and be noticed for all time;
and this literary treasure could outlast those precious diamonds
that superbly dazzle on the elegant dresses of the elite!

Sculptors have their chisel,
and if their creations seem too real,
like Michelangelo...they should hilariously scream:
to make them walk and talk!
Painters have their brush,
and with colors they paint images
of landscapes, of celestial bodies, of angelic and human faces:
unseen by the ordinary and undiscerning eyes;
patience is their secret, but rush
can cause havoc and make them lose their individualist touch!

Musicians, don't ever you get tired
of playing your instruments to entertain the insatiable public;
how exciting is to perform a new song,
written by the struggling songwriter and composer!
How thrilling and delightful are the new lyrics and music;
what about the singers, who gather up the crowds on the dance floor?

Ever admired an ancient or modern Cathedral
or an elegant, towering skyscraper,
which was truly breathtaking?
And the geniuses behind them
began to draw from their most
innovative and plausible prospective,
to convince themselves of their capability to create
many wanders from a simple idea!
Architects, your artistry is the outcome
of a sentiment, which was inactive...lying in the depth
of the unconscious mind...until it was awakened by desire!

My Thoughts Are Stars

"My thoughts are stars I cannot fathom into constellations." - John Green
_____________

They all glow with varied fury
with raging heat, emitting light
Each a small piece of a story
or a character in the night

Some will capture brief attention
as they streak across my sky
Dipping in and out of focus
fleeting past my mind’s dull eye

A few twinkle in sheer beauty
in buoyant reds and whites and blues
Others flounder, out of vision
in dim undiscerning hues

Some explode before they vanish
and get lost to time and space
but spread their magic far and wide
to make my mind a better place

Oh, these specks of light might guide me
as one-by-one, I see and grin
But to view as constellations? -
No, I really can’t begin

Premium Member Change - 2

I like for things to stay the same
But changes come and I always exclaim
“Jesus, Help me – I pray in Your name…
Guide me past the worry and shame”

I miss the way things used to be
When I was young, alive and free
Joy rising in my heart, I agree
This was the time of miracles for me

I long for those moments of hope
Knowing Jesus would help me to cope
With sorrows that caused me to grope
In fear, feeling like I was hung on a rope

Refrain:

Darkness dims my soul’s view
With colors black and blue
Reminders that I always knew
Without Him, I can’t face the new

Changes like this are often burning
Dread and doubt are there, churning
Reminding me of the shift as I’m turning
From the familiar to the alien, undiscerning

Worries reflect my worries and strife
As I tremble with fear from their knife
Will I ever find hope in this new life
Where I struggle to adapt despite rife

Time presses me forward into the new
Guiding me to believe in the joy that grew
With a prayer answered by the One who
Loves me like His child, with a love so true

Premium Member Becoming

Being explores
The cause becoming
In transcience here

Brief is our stay
On earthly shores
Where being explores

The way to go
In script unsure
Is mostly trial-and-error

Follow the heart
That seems to know
Just how and why

The answers come
In unsure steps
That reveal hindsight

So many questions
That come to light
In odd equations

Some seek to find
The unknown sea
Yet fail to be

True magic is found
As courage acts
To fact and form

Be unafraid
For fear casts a veil
Burst all illusions

Life yields to love
Surpass the mists
Go beyond fear

A deep dark cave
Protects the truth
From undiscerning fools

Illumination comes
With layers peeled
Life's like an onion

See that you see
Beyond all sensing
Truth waits for you

Recognize your gifts
Use well your talents
Reason why you're here

Each to a lifetime
Well worth living
God makes no mistakes

Being starts flow
Becoming now grows
Blessings here show

Seek the true light
That lights your way
Dare to be just you

Just like a flower
Bloom where you are
Live your best face

Bubble

Bubble
by Michael R. Burch

                Love—
          fragile, elusive—
      if held too closely
    cannot withstand
  the inter ruption
of its bright,
  unmalleable tension
    and breaks, disintegrates,
       at the touch of
           an undiscerning
                   hand.
