Premium Member Threshold of Madness

The cold hand of Winter swiftly approaches
Its breath etches frost on my windowpanes
Nearer my threshold, Death now encroaches

Blood is slowly chilling inside my frail veins
Reaper's wild winds pelts hail on my roof
His breath etches frost on my windowpanes

Snowdrifts climb higher on the sills in reproof
Huddled in a corner, my fear is spurred
Reaper's wild winds pelts hail on my roof

This room is the chamber where I'll be interred
On the threshold of madness, I'm losing grip
Huddled in a corner, my fear is spurred

Winter's hand has caused a temperature dip
I flinch at the sound of a knock on my door
On the threshold of madness, I'm losing grip

Terror incites me to curse what I abhor
The cold hand of Winter swiftly approaches
I flinch at the sound of a knock on my door
Nearer my threshold, Death now encroaches

Another year has come - chillingly -
and more chillingly for me than in decades heretofore.
I watch it ranting from my window as I recall. . . .

The year already past had tugged me from those tame and toasty days
when I lay face up to sun
dreaming that my summer would never end.
It brought me to this winter when it withered up and died,
but half a century and more of memories
had fallen for me by now.
Like pretty crystal flakes they fell, drifting through my mind -
places, events and people.

Oh, those people I looked up to in my youth -
fallen as the snow!
How many pretty snow flakes have melted now away?
Only my memories of them remain. . .
memories now piled up like snowdrifts in my brain.

Yes, the newborn year has arrived.
Just one month old and already, it has lost its crawl.
This infant’s aging process parallels, on the larger scale,
that fleeting span of time known as life -
a time that all the living undergo.

The new year carries on (as must we all) to soon complete its cycle.
Let it bluster. Let it wail. Let it rattle at my door,
for soon enough, all signs of it will cease.

Premium Member Winter Magic

Pristine mountain breeze
Shivers naked trees...
Autumn whispers her adieu.
Northern air descends
Chilling snow filled winds,
Pines view a magic milieu.

In the frigid snow
Icy crystals grow
In the beauty of the light.
Snowflakes bring a sigh...
Snowdrifts rising high
As the winter sky turns white.

Warm inside our Inn
Snowbound once again
In our peaceful getaway.
We take great delight
At the cheery sight
Of a snowman shaped today.

This poem is an Alouette:

The Alouette, is a form created by Jan Turner, it consists of two
or more stanzas of 6 lines each, with the following set rules:

Meter: 5, 5, 7, 5, 5, 7
Rhyme Scheme: a, a, b, c, c, b

The form name is a French word meaning 'skylark' or larks that fly high, the association to the lark's song being appropriate for the musical quality of this form. The word 'alouette' can also mean a children's song (usually sung in a group), and although this poetry form is not necessarily for children's poetry (but can be applied that way), it is reminiscent of that style of short lines. Preference for the meter accent is on the third syllable of each line.

Births Spring

Springtime…
Rebirth of life
Brings joy

Joyful
Trees and flowers
Budding

Buds spread
Petals offer
Sweet scents

Scenting
Air with fragrance
Of blooms

Blooming
Spring till summer
Fulfilled

Full rich
Long summer days
Hotter

Hot days
Of late summer
Cooler

Cool days
Transform trees to
Bright glow

Glowing
Leaves of Autumn
Soon fall

Falling
Bright leaves become
Dried life

Lifeless
Winter chill brings
First snow

Snowfall
Brightens Earth with
Whitewash

White snow
Spreads marshmallow
Splendor

Splendid
Holiday time
With snow

Snowdrifts
Disappear with
Sun’s warmth

Warm days
Of sun, rain bring
New spring

Springtime…
Rebirth of life
Brings joy

Marionette

A marionette to the mind,
Whispering fading schematics,
Deluging the heart and soul, in a
Juxtaposition of good and evil,
Betwixt Heaven and hell, amidst
Snowdrifts that swirl before my eyes, while
Spiritless shadows restlessly carouse;
Discordantly, far from reach,
Vagrantly ambling across
Deadened Arcadias, glimpsing
Floating embers, in wake of
Vivid firestorms, swallowing me whole,
Faltering with every step I take,
Decelerating towards the escape I seek,
As it rhythmically scars my timorous nature,
Awakening the monsters hidden deep within-seeing red-
Bleeding out miasmic toxins, as noxious
Spores erupt, immersed in a haze of austerity,
While it seeps and saturates, throughout
Malignant wounds exposed, undulating between
The storms of push and pull, as daunting
Tasks, of rippling sequences, splits my
Chasmic core.
Soulless footprints are all that remain, as
Moon tides wash ashore, ebbing away
Towards dystopian depths.

Winter’s silent soul
Kisses away the darkness
With trembling flakes, snow feathers
Cardinals whisper
Blessing the breathless prayers
From hearts who feel love’s inklings

Soundless as snowdrifts
On the edge of a shadow
Caressing the mountains, the stars
Imaginations
Lift the spirits with lights,
Dazzling rays of hopeful fires

Burning away nights
Hues of laughter, kindness sighs
Erasing the fears, the tears
Stirring memories
Moments who prick the spirit
Collecting joy, so gentle

Endless reflections
Melancholy bleeding through
Branding love onto the dream
Aching frosts, bitter
In graceful, glacial coolness
Amazing artic natures

Imagine loving,
Through the snow blanketed days
Rising to find what love means
Drifting on the stars
Enchanting hopes, glistening
Stardust winter tones, rustling

Winter subsides, soft,
As the mellow flurries, calm
Bearing the twilight season
March arrives soon, winds,
Blowing away the last gusts,
Inviting the spring’s new birth.

BEAUTIFUL FALL

Blowing winds usher in colorful fall's parade
Elusive as a butterfly on the wing in an
Atmosphere that changes everything.
Uniting leaves to depart from their boughs,
Trees dressed in scarlet, gold, orange and brown
Inflight, twirl and dance their way toward ground
Filling eyes with such breathless imagery
Until the last leaf has retired to rest
Leaving bare trees to welcome snowdrifts.

Fall arrayed in hues to warm us from her chill
Always gives us grace from summer heat
Loveliest season of the year when
Lovers rejoice in the poetic beauty of it all.

Quartz Glass Spaces

I love you without surmising 'why',
your passion sets pon dusky distances
betwixt & 'midst quartz glass spaces,
where scented phases astir moon glow
and impassioned fireside involvement
madly erupt above obscure air castles,
beyond a swept away briny rendezvous
of crystallized darkly essential marrow,
like wildflowers penchant for Spring
blooming 'tween summoned fiery March
snowdrifts' lashing bout ignitable flurries
amongst wind's orgasmic undressing,
farthermost indulgent sundown piques
regaling its worth with naught but those
magnificent moments in timely conception,
whence endearment yearns to be evermore

For They Had Deep Faith And True Loving Hearts

Snow was seven feet deep, it was still falling
Life was brutal and crying for frozen feet
Grandfather heard echoes miles away calling
He starving alone, nothing at all to eat

Settler's cabin ahead was his saving grace
For he knew in faith, they had good Christian souls
With faith filled love for those of his redskin race
True mercy, helping others their cherished goals

With no memory of how he had made it
His failing legs got him to that cabin door
Through snowdrifts, not knowing how he had made it
A miracle, he had prayed for nothing more

Suddenly, safe inside, cheerfully greeted
With warm food and their sincere prayers repeated

Note: True story, as we were told by our Indian grandfather and our mother.

A brief narrative written in short, sonnet form, telling of how my Indian grandfather, Julius Parks, was once saved from freezing to death in a brutally cold and massive winter storm, by a Christian family living deep in the woods..
He would finish the story by telling us, kids those people are in HEAVEN RIGHT NOW.
FOR THEY HAD DEEP FAITH AND TRUE LOVING HEARTS!!!!

Premium Member Fragrant Freshness

Spring adds a fragrant freshness to the air
as earthy aromas waft 'neath the snow;
and sunlight melts away Winter's despair.

Daffodils contribute color and flare;
and as balmy breezes bashfully blow,
Spring adds a fragrant freshness to the air.

Snowdrifts dwindle to patches barely there;
and frozen rivers once more start to flow,
as sunlight melts away Winter's despair.

Wildflowers start sprouting up everywhere;
and as snowdrops, tulips and crocus grow,
Spring adds a fragrant freshness to the air

The land no longer looks so bleak and bare;
on tawny trees, green buds begin to show,
as sunlight melts away Winter's despair.

A treat to the senses, scented and rare;
bell-shaped lily-of-the-valley hangs low.
Spring adds a fragrant freshness to the air;
as sunlight melts away Winter's despair.

Premium Member Chill Breath of Winter

Winter's chill breath clouded my windowpanes
Snowdrifts covered Autumn's shades of umber
I listened to music, composed in wistful strains
My family were all abed, snuggled in slumber
Nostalgic tears fell; far too many to number

My sad thoughts were replaced by a smile
as I staunched the swell that freely flowed
Grateful for my blessings, now and erstwhile
for upon me God's grace has been bestowed
I closed my eyes, praying as candles glowed

Show Us Your Pretty Face

The snowdrifts gone from winter long
except for shadowed edges traced
The snow! The snow! The cold be gone!
Show us your pretty face...

Oh, fear not heady breaths of frost,
the icey teeth from sill displaced
the glare of arctic bite is lost
Show us your pretty face...

Oh, come my lovely dreamer shake
from 'neath the sleepy veils of lace
Oh, raise your crown; from slumber wake
Show us your pretty face...

I wonder is your smile on lips
of lavender and sun-sweet grace
and are your eyes like saffron tips
Show us your pretty face...

Oh, for the face of Spring I long
the crocus nestled in her place
Oh, beckoner of robin's song
show us your pretty face...

Premium Member Frightful Forecast

Weather forecast so frightful, so scary
It removes from this season the 'merry'

Howling winds and blowing snowdrifts
Force your car off the edge of a cliff

Visibility of less than half and inch
   Makes an experienced aviator flinch

700 flights canceled in and out of O'Hare
Frustrated travelers curse, cuss and swear

On bridges and overpasses icy conditions
   Blackening every commuter's disposition

Travel advisories constantly warn of the worst
For those on the road in this accursed cloudburst

Oh, that I'd been created as a great big black bear
~ So I could tune all this out -- fast asleep in my lair

See the snow falling
the frozen trees sway
snowdrifts like mountains
a squirrel running
birds at the feeder

Feel a sadness
deep loneliness
thirsty for love
the pain of death

Hear music
the fireplace
the snowplows

Taste tea
brown toast

Eggs
