~The Kentucky Derby~
(Quatrain)

What a glorious day it is today,
As people of all ages are having fun,
Because the Kentucky Derby race,
Is taking place till the day is done.

You can really see all around the,
Throughbred beautiful horses,too,
That will be competing for the,
grand prize that they'll give today.

There are very large crowds everywhere, and,
Folks are laughing and making bets to,
For their favorite horses everywhere, and,
You can feel their excitement mounting too.

You can see the jockeys walking around,
Displaying proudly all their best colors and silks too.
They all seem to be,more than ready for this race,
While taking last notes here and there to make things okay today.

Well, this wonderful race is about to start any moment now.
The horses are being prepared in every way,and that's true,
As they're all looking their very best from head to hoofs,
The winner will receive a very beautiful cup and great honors, too.

So many bets that are at stake here for so many today,
People are very excited, rushing all over the place to,
As the horses and their jockeys are getting ready now,
The jockeys are looking so proud atop the horses they'll ride, too.

The horses and jockeys are now set for this much awaited race,
They're all in line and in their position to start anytime to,
But it will take a long time for sure for this race to be over,
But already it looks like "Black Beauty" is about to make history today.

My Kentucky In Autumn

My Kentucky in Fall

Peaceful country roads winding through meadows and hills,
and golden rays kiss purple asters, tall ironweed and abundant goldenrod.
Gorgeous colors are greeting me despite the warning that drought
would hold them back this year.
Glowing yellows, warm reds and burning orange leaves are clinging
to the heavy branches, limbs swaying in the autumn breeze.
Fallen leaves dance to the music of the currents,
poison ivy vines wrap the stately maple in crimson.

Damp snapping turtles sun themselves on a rock in the creek,
while further up a blue heron is standing silently, watching the
slow flowing water, until he is ready to strike.

Our majestic Ohio river reflects the cloudless, azure sky
while bordered by densely covered cliffs that are
decked in their autumn finest.
Profusely blooming red cardinal vines cling to the rocky ledges
are kissed by happily buzzing bees and bouncing butterflies.

Pumpkins, ghosts and witches decorate porches and front doors,
gray barns are brimming with hay, tobacco and corn,
contently harboring their bounty.
Acorns, black walnuts and hickory nuts are plentiful, yet squirrels
do not seem in a hurry to bring in their winter supply.

Smiling, waving hikers are climbing the autumn scented hills
to Tioga Falls, and Virginia Creeper vines show pleasing colors
along the old Rail Road Bridge.
On the side of the road the lush cedars have developed
their silver-blue berries,
and wild rose bushes are displaying their red rose hips.
Autumn has come to my Kentucky.

Premium Member A Warm Kentucky Afternoon

Here in warm sunshine I sit,
near by a beautiful lake.
Many birds in the tree like to flit.
Long lush branches the breeze likes to shake.
Pretty birds all around call twit-twit -
Sweetness of which I partake!

Spotting some boats off a way
dotting the lake, happily
I have put down my pen as a jay
swoops on by. That is when I first see
shadows creeping have dimmed my noon day.
Sunlight, as always, must flee.

Heard a soft sufting through the front door.
Must be 'nother telegram from Kentucky.
Never lived there. Never been there.
But God I bet it's beautiful.
Blue grass. Blue trees. Blue people.
I'll make it one day, I figure. Out of this trailer.
Out of this ditch.

Got a 'gram not two months ago from Kentucky.
Mother lives there now. Frail, worried. Probably blue.
Says it don't bother her I never visit.
Says she's sticking around. So I figure I have time.
Time to get to Kentucky. Time to be blue. Time for it all, I figure.

Kentucky boasts about her Mammoth Cave
People exploring it are quite brave
Four hundred miles
Giving them trials
Exploring her passages is a fave.

Once knew a man from Kentucky
Had a boil on his nose, quite unlucky
A state he was in
Not Kentucky, that's dim
Had to squeeze it, oh my, sure was yucky

YOUR LOOKING GOOD AFTER A FEW DAYS REST.
YOUR FANS ARE HERE IN THEIR SUNDAYS BEST.
ACCORDING TO WRITERS, YOUR BETTER THAN MOST.
WHIRLAWAY BUDDY, WE'RE ONLY MINUTES FROM POST.
LET'EM SET THE PACE. WE'LL LET THEM RUN.
WE'LL COME FROM BEHIND MAKE IT LOOK LIKE FUN.
IN THE BACK STRETCH, THAT'S OUR TIME.
WE'LL MOVE UP FRONT AND WE'LL BE FINE.
OUT OF THE FAR TURN AND INTO THE STRETCH,
TAKE OVER THE RACE, THERE'S A BIG PURSE TO FETCH.
FROM INSIDE OUTSIDE STAY IN STRIDE.
IN THE WINNERS CIRCLE WE CAN STAND WITH PRIDE.
WHEN CROSSING THE FINISH, REMEMBER TO SMILE.
WE WANT THIS VICTORY TO LAST US A WHILE.
WHIRLAWAY, BABY, YOU HAVE A GREAT NAME,
AND IT BELONGS IN THE HALL OF FAME.

The Kentucky Hayseed - By Bob Atkinson

The Kentucky Hayseed

  - by Bob Atkinson

he looks a little confused
his mind cast in a fix
how can he concentrate on this
just a little bit

a jerky set of previews
float over and above
his articulated vision on
some confused state of fuss

he'd never seen a problem
like this in all his life
a complex set of jargon
not allowing mushy light

he chewed on a blade of grass
considering all possibilities there
just open ended reflex
on most of which, he didn't care

his mama told him something
when a child was he
he tried to focus reason
when allowed here to repeat

that never ending slogan
of truth and firm despair
carrying nothing in between
his inner and outer ears

the hayseed settled down to work
a tumor he could see
grabbed a scalpel from the nurse
and simply cut it free
