Suncatcher --Recited

A visitor—
icicle fingers
tapping on my windows' pain—
white blanket in tow

Hurting enough, I paid him no mind
so he kept tap, tap, tapping
‘til cobweb-like cracks appeared:
a final, gentle tap
shatters my windows
My rainbow world
now smothered, pallid,
forced into boredom and slumber,
sunlight chased away

and I am never the same again…

Soul gets plunged deep in the cold
blinded by whiteness, numbed with simplicity
there is an eerie stillness,
almost as if no one dared to breathe,
even the barren trees refused to quiver

brittle dendrites seem to claw the sky
futile though, for they are frozen,
grasping at nothingness,
clouds stubborn and stoic,
brooding in silent grayness

…and then from within, a filigreed whisper escapes
palpable and brave~
it weaves its way through the branches,
gathering strength wherever it went
it beckons to the sky, which in turn

gives in and celebrates ~
letting dainty confetti fall
white, yet amazingly graceful
each flake falls softly on the ground—
a fashionable brocade

trees softly sway now,
and dance to a winter song
the sky weeps with happiness
for seeing a glimpse of life—
diamond teardrops

they catch a bit of evasive sunlight,
of which I thought I’ve lost
and give birth to miniature rainbows…
all this time, Sunlight was there
I just
never knew
how to
catch
it.

Under the Stars

The cobalt sky has many eyes;
they're brightest just before sunrise
as starlight.

Sprinkled amidst the indigo
we stop to let the sandman sow
his stardust.

Glittering `cross the peaceful night
we view a shooting star take flight;
we're starstruck.

The sky becomes a starlit show
as sea reflects its silver glow,
so starbright.

In awe we kiss and say goodnight.
I watch as you walk from my sight,
soft . . . starlit.

Premium Member Stunning Revelations From Ancient Maps

Professor Hapgood’s studies on ancient maps were fixed
Einstein said his theories should be added to history’s mix
Perhaps it proved too big a leap for other minds to take
But his ancient culture findings, Hapgood would not forsake

6000 BC, before Egypt’s pyramids were built
Millennia before Pompeii’s lava had been spilled
Or small fishing boats hugged the Mediterranean Coast
And Columbus’s “daring” voyage was not even close

Ancient seafarers drew with astounding accuracy
Maps of the world they once knew, the fishermen’s legacy
Antarctica sans ice and closer to the equator
The Mid-Atlantic Ridge once an above-sea sky scraper

Siberia touching Alaska with no Bering Strait
(Palin could have seen Russia without snow from her back gate)
Cuba, England, Sweden, too, on these maps appear clearly
But Sweden’s fully glacial; England’s blanket an ice sheet

If we believe Hapgood, a civilization once thrived
Thousands of years before language; maps keep memories alive
Technology to chart the seas was lost in ancient times
With latitude and longitude measurements quite refined

Sea kings’ cities may have succumbed during the last Ice Age
Surviving nations lost their skill when history turned a page
Geography to be found again when the Earth had healed
“Discoverers” reinvented the forgotten ship’s wheel

Magellan, perhaps not the first to sail around the globe
Admiral Byrd not the first man to visit the South Pole
Spirits from a colony of seafarers can be found
From deep beneath Antarctic ice, they try to spread the word

But laugh they must as scientists forecast global warming
And man attempts to alter life and heed their dire warning
Shifting poles? Natural cycles! Men would be well advised
To study the maps Hapgood found and open their closed minds

Premium Member Table For One

Insistent starkness claims a leafless day
Where morning breaks with silent calm and dread
The slope of field is framed, behind the glass
reveals a fallen tree, with jagged edge
and grassy hills now laced with autumn rust

Inside we find a plain and cheerless room
The table sparce, an empty chair
A plate, a knife, a saucer, without spoon
One empty cup, will wait for no one there...

Ambiance of what has been,
 ...still lingers in the air,
as amber glows, with threats of snow,
are just a hint, instead

Lonely hours, and lonely days, and lonely shadows blend
The endless songs of yesterday, slip in from window's ledge
A meager meal will spread upon a table set for one
Where breaking bread alone without a friend
is companioned by a solitary end

The angled sun, casts shadows deep and long
A somber mood, reflects this quiet calm
Upon the walls, where gardens grew, are faded memories
where yellow blooms of yesterday, are just a step away

Where, once were two, who loved and knew their sun would rise again
There now is one who sits alone ...at the table set for one
Where hope has gone, when morning comes...
                                       to sing a lonely song

Premium Member Feel My Reprimand

This poem gives a slightly different viewpoint of the meadow in 'Two Painters,' written by Arthur Vaso. His poem can be read by visiting his site at: http://arthurvaso.weebly.com/current-poems.html

From a hill overlooking the meadow green
I watched two painters with canvas and brush
Eyes focused on each other and nature's scene
I saw when her face took on a faint tint of blush

A basket lunch was laid beneath an apple tree
Skies grew dark when the serpent slithered in
Forbidden fruit not bitten, I watched them flee
Turning away from the evil temptation of sin

The meadow is again lush with morning mist
I removed the evil one with strokes of my brush
Two painters fell in love with their first kiss
I stand at my easel listening to songs of a thrush

I created the meadow and the man with my hand
It's you, evil creature, who will feel my reprimand

Premium Member But I Must Stay

My wife may go, but I must stay
My unused ticket in my hand
Her flight is finally underway

The Nazis held my full dossier
The word had come from high command
My wife may go, but I must stay

Our cigarettes within the tray
With lipstick stains upon her brand
Her flight is finally underway

My passport stamped with letter "J"
A clerk is typing - I am banned
My wife may go, but I must stay

One golden earring gone today
The other one tight in my hand
Her flight is finally underway

I lied: "It's just a short delay."
Perhaps one day she'll understand
My wife may go, but I must stay
Her flight is finally underway

Doubts

Dear members of Poetry Soup, here I present my most awesome poem to date.
It is best appreciated while listening to my mate Andy's recital.
So please open-
http://www.andyevansfiction.com/interviews/andy-reads-a-poem-called.html
and read along.
Here goes:

DOUBTS

When the sanctuary
Of sunlight sinks
And dark shadows
Lay across your thoughts
Spiteful talons
Scrape against your reason
Their dragging
Resonating
In your mind

Out beyond your vision
In the darkness of the hour
Your doubts stir
Shuffling
Muttering
Foul damning words
That pierce you
Slicing through your certainty
Severing the flow
Of your integrity
Chill words
Spoken so close
They breeze past your ear
And settle like ice
On your dignity
Threatening
Menacing
Sounds of movement so near
That doubts brush
Your confidence

In the gloom
These doubts
Analyse
Scrutinise
Your every mistake
Real and imagined
Emphasised
Magnified
Demonised
Your honest intentions
Mercilessly proven
Futile
Trivial
Infantile
Your courage
And Morale
Shattered
Scattered
Lost in the darkness
Surrounded by doubts

Fearful
Deceitful
Doubts twist
Blur reality
Ripping
Façade
From hidden self
Clawing
Screaming
Igniting fear
Pupils dilating
Stupefied
Skinned
Heart racing
Blood
Gore
Torn from your chest
Undesired self
Splayed
Exposed

When the sanctuary
Of sunlight rises
And dark shadows
Are chased from your thoughts
Hopeful hands
Massage your reason
Their comforting
Relaxing
Your mind

Premium Member Extinction Is Forever

He wakes as sun surrenders to nightfall;
emitting a haunting howl, he rises to prowl.
Bright amber eyes fixate on sources of nourishment.

Leaving his protected den in Yellowstone,
gray predator becomes the prey.
Just feet beyond the National Park
farmers shoot to protect livestock.

Defenders of Wildlife beg of Congress
“Stop the shooting!
Ensure the future of once-endangered wolves!”

Regal kings of the mountains and prairies,
nearly extinct in the ‘30s,
rebounded but are still vulnerable.

Their future rests in the hands of man,
a species that exterminates thoughtlessly,
posing threats to many of nature’s gifts.

Wild one, remain in protected areas.
Survive and thrive; extinction is forever.
Mankind’s death knell tolls for too many.

* Information on the gray wolf is provided by “Defenders of Wildlife,” a U.S. group that works to protect many endangered species. Each day we lose 25 to 150 animal species. Premium Member A Love Couple Cuddling On a Couch

The cute figurine I am looking at now
is one of a couple at home on a couch.

The guy, at the end of the couch, comfortably
relaxes, a pillow upon his left knee.

With her head on the pillow there at his knee,
his gal reclines sideways while they watch TV.

On the top of the couch is perched a white cat,
which I picture them now and then giving a pat!

In front of the couch of this sweet figurine
is their loyal puppy, completing the scene.

How nice it is to be comfy cozy
snuggling together, a picture so rosy.

How precious the moments in one’s family,
for with those we love is the best place to be!

Pangolins

Oh precious little Pangolins
How many people know of you?
Though forty million years you've lived
Your numbers have become too few.

While hunted for your scales and meat
By poachers, a great price they seek.
You curl up in a little ball,
Such easy prey because you're meek.

Unless donations keep you safe
Extinction soon will be your fate.
My prayer is that to know of you
The public will appreciate

Your contribution to this Earth.
Of ants and insects do you dine,
A gentle creature of the wild.
Your presence here is quite divine.

Lucky Numbers 2, 10, 24, 65, 93

You don’t know this but
we’re all ISBN’s. At birth,
we’re tattooed across our asses
with barcodes, ID tags, social security numbers.
The only doctors allowed
to perform this surgical move
were trained in suits and sunglasses,
were handcuffed to computer suitcases,

held galas in mansions in the hills
of Virginia, roamed secretly through tunnels
beneath Abe Lincoln’s feet, they infiltrated
every hospital, mandated staff to hand over
the key cards. Don’t be alarmed.

Chocolate brownies can still
hold good dreams, peanuts, and marijuana.
This information should not stop you,
you wondered before about those
seven digits printed across the tops of your pay stubs,
didn’t you? And the 48906 signature on every document
from your university.

Yes, you see now. All along,
that tattoo on your soul numbers destiny:
one of the numbers stands for the birthday
of your child, one for the day your parents will find
cancer sinking its teeth in their osteoperostic bones,
and one lists the street address of the building
you will die in. The hospital’s phone number
is merely a set of numbers. Ask them

what they’ve done to you, and they’ll shrug
their white-collar shoulders.

Premium Member Sandman Nursery Rhyme

When the Sandman’s near
I can almost hear
his soft footsteps breaking ground.
With his tender touch
my eyes feel so much
as he sprinkles sand around.

I don’t want to sleep
but I want to keep
all the dreams he has for me.
So I welcome sand
from his gentle hand
and I drift off peacefully.

Prized for perfumes and medicines,
Rainbow personified & God’s messenger,
Resting the souls of dead women,
Decorum of the graves,
Delight of the ancient artists.

Blooming on Minoan Walls,
Sculptured in stone at Karnak.
Living memories of the French revolution.
Clovis put you on his banner
And won over Germanic tribe.
Louis VII adopted you as device,
‘Fleur-de-lis’ the symbol of France.
Germany suspended you in beer barrels,
And France to enrich the wine,
England to give flavour to brandies,
And Russia flavoured a soft drink.

Then, plucked in a state of chastity,
Now, relegated to flavour toothpaste.

They swim in skins
not their own

calling us
into them
they amuse us

we are fathoms deeper

they
