Premium Member A Place of Timeless Harmony - a Tribute To Connie Marcum Wong

She rides on a sailing ship high in the skies
embracing creation of her wandering star
cheerfully greeting her guests.
Some pleasant and chatty,
some on occasion she may ask,
            “Please don’t fall over me.”

Hawaii is where her heart lies;
and island of poetry that inspires her soul,
of orange sunset against sublime radiant blue.

She strolls up and down the tan beach,
enjoying the feel of warm grains of sand between her toes,
breathing in the whole innocence of beauty
as tears of joy blend in with the cool briny sea.

A place of timeless harmony
her peace of heaven

Premium Member White Lace and Snowflakes

Nervous as a harried hen, Mom was in a dither
Would wedding guests be kept away by the winter weather?

My cheeks so rosy from the sting of howling, bitter winds
White lace and pearls, car door opened and a young girl stepped within

Fresh mums adorned the altar of “Our Lady by the Sea”
Blue bridesmaid angels led the way; John waited lovingly

Vows exchanged as God smiled down, crystal kisses danced in air
The reception band played merrily, all invited were there

Many guests remarked they’d never seen a happier bride
At midnight John took my ring-adorned hand, we ventured outside

Snow drifts piled ‘round the cars, Great Nor’ Easter just ending
My mate high on love (and champagne), wheels on highway spinning

Pulling into a gas station, trying to get a grip
Still in my bridal gown as the dipping temperatures nipped

The station attendant ran out and smiled, he’d seen us reel
But we were laughing and trading places behind the wheel

My tipsy spouse in a tux, truly a sight to behold
When we reached our new home, I carried HIM o’er the threshold'

STILL LIFE WITH FRUIT

In spite of the orchard
A far white moon dominates
Its sick room presence lifts the eye

Still life with fruit –
Crescent dish with bananas, apples, pears -
A wrinkled bed spread falls off the sky

In all an angular canvas,
A drowsy cubist squint,
Imposed shapes, lines – Picasso pie

This pointed, silver vase pokes through
Its ample gift of flowers,
Destroys the view – Oh, my!

I’ve come to, limp right arm yet hangs over,
Attendant tells, “Breakfast time. You hungry?
Let’s sit up. There! Good guy.”

What's In a Name

Find it in an anagram, its a name of French descent
It has four vowels in it,and is a long nine letter word.
The main noun starts with C , and ends up with an E.
Its beauty lies in sugar-coated charm,Its carefree as can be.
A melody of lyrics where graceful swans belong
If you'll get to know it, it means you found a Song.
It owns a friendly attitude like Blossoms of May
Pleasant yet stubborn, and does plenty in a day.
A bountiful orchard bestowing delightful gifts
Of kindness, calm serenity ,and truth upon the lips.
It empowers the one who owns it
with a will to change the world.Born to be
a hidden leader whose voiceless men defends.
Endowed by empathy.Spiritually insightful
Emotionally endearing ,with a tint of mystery.
By Shakespeare ,Cleopatra's attendant was called the same
but as the Bard penned , 'What's in a name'
Would you treat me differently if I just called myself
Madame,Mademoiselle or Dame?
Would my light shine brighter if I was called a star
Isn't it our heart which proclaims who we are?
Isn't it our soul which reveals identity
Isn't it our life-lines which prevail our destiny ?

No Service

Discarded cotton t-shirt shrunken and stained
on the side of a street pot-holed and veined
pants sagging low with no shoes on his feet
headphones blaring to the latest hip-hop beat

Heading down to the corner looking for a score
the old 76 filling station with the boarded up doors
how times have changed in a mere forty years
youthful exuberance gone now nobody cares

Flash back we go to the days of my youth
hard work the requisite as was the truth
running on empty our roll was real slow
clean-cut attendant with bow-tie for show

Service with a smile, thank you and please
gone is simplicity and enjoying the breeze

Premium Member Daybreak: Observed From An Airline Window

The sky shone gaunt gold
on the lip of the storm
before the anvil shaped clouds advanced
upon the burning margins of the world

Like a dream
the thunder rolled away
leaving cotton candy swirls
before a spreading dawn

Gentle white horse clouds appeared
pulling pastel chariots
bearing angels -
rainbows, tinted on their snowy wings

Down they plunged
gilt-edged, into a pit of pure white
popcorn clouds

Feeling God-like before
the breakfast service
I watched delicate washes of pale lavender
mist into daylight.

Aerophobia-The Fear of Flying

Apprehensive and panic-stricken
I practice assuming the crash position .
While a “ fasten seatbelt” sign flashes
like a beacon, foretelling our demise,
cool beads of sweat form on my forehead.
A paralyzing anxiety washes over me.
My knuckles are chalk white as
my hands grip the armrests.
I try to swallow but my throat is dry as dust.
I frantically push the bell to summon an attendant.
I need water…..anything!
She appears looking concerned
and I’m impressed how calm she remains
in such a dire situation.
My knees tremble as I once again
examine my seat, ready,
should I need it as a flotation device.
Feeling uncontrollably trapped,
my chest tightens, my lungs scream for oxygen.
Suddenly the plane lurches, the engines roar,
then silence.
Oblivious to those around me,
terror has me tight in her grasp.
A pounding headache
tortures my disconnected thoughts.
A sudden wave of imminent diaster engulfs me.
Assuming the worst,
I close my eyes and pray for a miracle.
In response, comes the ominous announcement,
"Ladies and gentlemen,
we will be taxiing to the runway momentarily,
we apologize for the delay.’’

Where Do I Sit

(Austin, Texas, 1955)

I see in a bus
All the black faces in the back
All the white faces in the front
I’m neither white nor black!
Where do I sit?

Greyhound bus station
I see two signs
‘Whites Only’
‘Blacks Only’
I’m neither white nor black!
Which one do I use?
Ask a bus attendant
He scratched his head
And smiled
‘Go to the wall
Between two doors’
Then he tapped my back
And said
Either is OK with me
Young man

FIFTY YEARS LATER

I visited Austin
No more black faces
Sitting in the back
No more
‘Blacks Only’ ‘Whites Only’ signs

I didn’t have to ask
‘Where do I sit?’
‘Where do I go?’

Premium Member My Single Resolution for the New Year

“There are enormous possibilities for one to improve in life, as world is a great university and we are taught through text books of life’s experiences with sagacious sages and savants as our teachers and the precepts of great men who have left a great legacy behind.”-- ~By Poet~

As New Year dawns, promising a fresh start,
We pledge to see the graph of life rising in our chart.
At this time when all make resolutions many to be won,
I have boiled down my resolves to a single one.

All I wish is to be a better person in body and mind
To love others, forgive my enemies and be kind
This is something I have been striving all my life,
Get along even with my detractors without strife.

Train myself to be considerate to all without exception,
Be compassionate to the needy without expectation.
Live my life smooth without many a nagging care
And never let my heart sink into dull despair.

Scrub away all my glaring imperfections clean.
Bring healthy practices everyday into my routine.
Admire nature and tend it in all its attendant glory.
Add memorable and sweeter episodes to my life’s story.

Be a loving partner in whom my man can spy,
An ocean of love surging in my dewy eye.
To my children, ever remain as an adorable mother,
A confidante, a friend and guide, giving them succor.

Through words and deeds, show them the miracle of love.
Teach them to be thankful for the blessings from above.
Thus enact my role as a wife and mother in the best way possible,
Accepting, for my success and failure, I alone am responsible.

Premium Member Dueler's Thrust

What's the scariest book you ever read?.. Some Stephen King book like "Salem's Lot" or "The Shinning"?

For me its Kate Millett's "Sexual Politics".. Oh, man.. Now THAT will scare you to death if you're female.

I discovered a man, (overheard) at my church, who actually believes his sex a sign of power, and of superiority..

WHY am I so startled? Some childish trust not yet scrubbed off? - Or worse yet some belief, not yet strangled, in a better world?

See, stupid me, I thought this bill had been paid, by sufferance, by real people like Elizabeth Stanton, Carrie Catt and Martin King.. by entire generations who ran through those tangled woods emerging cut and bruised.. if at all.

What is it like for HIM? I see him eying us, his little inferiors who bleed with the moon, with secret, catlike distaste.. regarding female opinions as slightly impure then, with calm, God like grace, granting the form of servant to assume.

Can I, can we, be forced to accept this inheritance? I don't know..

All I know is that this prejudice, so strangely without substance, strikes me like the duelers lucky thrust robing me of attendant rights and wit.. springs that tender trap of doubt in the future and abandons me to stammering.

The Friendly Skies

Talk about a frightful flight
I think it was last Thursday night
I was heading out of town for work
Our flight attendant went berserk
Instead of the normal spiel they gave
This lady starts to rant and rave
Her own airline she really trashes
Screams about bad luck and crashes
No, it was not the friendly patter
She came across as a Mad Hatter
The other crewmen try to stop her
Eventually we had to hop her
Hold her down, call 911
This all before the flight’s begun
We had to taxi to a gate
As on the local cops we wait
Something had snapped, she couldn’t hack it
They took her off in a straight jacket
They took our numbers, took our names
Loaded us on other planes
No explanation of what just happen
Perhaps recruiters once were nappin’

All in all I now surmise
Unfriendly fly the friendly skies

My life seems to last forever now that I’ve start aging
The sudden onset aches and pains start engaging

My home is in a theme park petting zoo where other animals live and rest
Each day zoo attendants feed, water, and groom us to look our best for our guests

These little creatures called Children come into the petting zoo
With the sounds of ooohs, aaahs of surprise as they walk through

Sheep, goats, rabbits, to feed and interact physically with safety
Some of these little creatures try to chase me, some of us get shaky

A tall creature with a long mane and forelock yells, “Wait a minute baby!”
Is this tall creature going to save me?

A young pony, a true friend is 7 hands at the wither not as tall as me
Wearing a blanket and saddle for a rider to sit, and bridle to guide in safety

Zoo attendants teach the proper ways to handle animals
while brushing my forelock, poll, croup, and withers

They lift my gaskin the area behind my leg between the stifle and hock pointing to my fetlock explaining that is actually more like the ball of the foot on a human

Naming my coronet where it meets my hoof down to my frog; a highly elastic wedge-shaped mass on the underside of the hoof and supports both locomotion and circulation

When all is done the attendant extending a hand placing a treat close to my muzzle treating us with love and kindness, as we bubble full of admiration

Premium Member Farmer's Plow

The roadside implement left without attendant,
an objective lesson of technology progression.

Long lacking use, should be rot and rust.
Yet is anything but, even years without digging rut.

A hand once guided, a horse once dragged.
Hung up like the harness, and the feed bag.

So roadside it sits, repainted and new.
A plow, a tool of a past we honor, that men would use.

Historic and remembered, now a monument,
to the hard working farmer and time that he spent.

Fathers Day

Every June it happens,
Big celebration that never ends.
This is their sunrise-to-sunset,
Should us to commemorate.

An attendant at night,
Attentive parent at light,
Presence never leave us,
In every challenges we have.

Greatest gift of all,
A huge thanks for all,
You're our and my loving father,
And I must say I love you.
