The Bougainvillea Tree

It stood on the other side of the wall rooted firmly
for the white bougainvillea tree did not belong to me
Wondered why it always branched this side
paving my walkway with blooms of white

While I patiently waited for my rose bush to flower
it nonchalantly continued its year-long showers
Unbothered unfettered by the gardener’s reaper, it grew
in every direction, old branches shooting off the new

Assiduously each day I tried to broom them away
but they, like a mother’s kisses were always there
Falling softly like advices from an old friend
they were fragile, paper-white, yet persistent

With gentle breeze they glide to me be it summer rain or spring
Innumerable, countless like God’s many blessings.

Word Hoard

They say if you don’t use a thing for a year
It’s time to get rid of it, just to be clear
Feel free to sell it or give it away
But to get clutter free, just don’t let it stay

So, I checked my garage for stuff I could lose--
and found hundreds of words I simply don’t use!

Lilliputian and Sprightly stood on a shelf
Elbow-to-elbow with some wry little elf
Bucolic and Bumpkin were squirreled away
Beneath a big bale of bright yellow hay

Garish and Gaudy were in a glittery box
with Trinkets and Baubles set with fake rocks
Surreptitious and Unobtrusive tried to avoid being seen
But I caught 'em sneaking off with Clandestine

Beyond these loose words, which filled many a bin
Lay whole turns of phrase like Much to My Chagrin
I held up to the light a Gossamer Veil
Then dumped it in a Perfidious Betrayal

An Ethereal Cloud, glued to the ceiling
I scraped off with an Ambivalent Feeling
I rolled back the rug to see what I'd missed,
There before me stretched a Yawning Abyss

Into a huge crate, these big words I did toss
Bobbing on top were Flotsam, Jetsam and Dross
Fatigued by these labors, I took a short break
But that little respite may have been my mistake

Soon I was deep in most Pensive Reflection
On how Assiduously I had built this collection
In crept Myriad Doubts about so brash a move
What if I meet some Cad I need to Reprove?

What if some Craven Cur should Incur my Wrath
But words fail me due to this Ill-Chosen Path?
Well, soon that old crate was quite empty once more
And cluttered again were bin, shelf, drawer and floor

But one thing has changed, this is Palpably Clear
My Leviathan Word Horde I now Deeply Revere
Intrepid and Dauntless, I sling without fear
Iota and Mote.. I dust off once a year!

Premium Member Robin

Mrs. Robin, busy as a bee
  visits my home's skylight annually
She builds a nest there carefully
her private retreat, only I can see

She commandeers my yard militarily
  hopping to and fro imperiously
Ever seeking bark or twig assiduously
to feather her penthouse more comfortably

A half-dozen blue eggs she lays surreptitiously
  Settling down over them protectively
Sheltered from the elements so cunningly
  She awaits their hatching expectantly...

One day, her chirpings' cease, inevitably
  Mrs. Robins' dreams realized successfully
She's flown the coop, perforce happily
Her nest, forlorn ~ stares at me emptily

The Canal

The working navvy did dig deep
He followed Brindly’s new laid plan
A transport system to complete
A salvation for the labouring man

As the furrow cut with sweat and maul
With breaking backs and torn sinew
Each man in turn to heave and haul
Sustenance for starving kin renew

Tracts of land transform through spade and pick
 Veins enriching the countryside
Bringing new life, each shovel, each brick
Levelling earth, raising national pride

A true revelation this arterial plan
Almost lost through modernisation
Abandoned, grown dense, dispirit man
As steam and diesel grew within the nation

Each lock assiduously built
Before first steam engine’s whistle blew
Weeds strangle, progressive man’s new guilt
The canals ebb, debris as seeds strew

More beauteous now than ever been
Our arterial chart of the waterway
Each torn muscle, victuals did glean
Bed and nourishment for one more day

The navvy’s ghosts look down, heads held high
Their gnarled hands rest in heavenly peace
Majestic waterways dug in sweat with sigh
A once industrial, now beautiful masterpiece.

Be Positive

Putrid pus proliferates/purposely preventing
progression's passionate plea -
stifled cries...

Always ascending...and, assiduously avoiding
any acrimonious amounts accrued along apathetic
apertures..."Still I Rise!"

Incessantly fighting the urge to just drop
out of this rancid Rat Race we call living

Still, to abandon sanguine thoughts totally topples the
tenacious toughness that took time to temper...never stop giving

Enervated entities economically embattled

Man, each day we face trouble/In every Third World A Struggle -
singed and burned I'm like stubble/but, like The Ashes Of The Phoenix
to Resurrect from this rubble

Sometimes I shift towards arrogance; The Good Lord Keeps
me humble

Lifting languid limbs loftily to overcome this present Flood

Be Positive is my motto, the flip side?
It's my Blood...

Napoleon Bonaparte

Corsica born, and an emperor mighty indeed.
Who from obscurity came up to prominence,
who from French shores the attacks of armies repelled,
who had at his disposal, Europe's resources,
who to Saint Helena from French shores was expelled.
Of old Italian nobility he was seed.
Shortish in height, yet towering in ambition.
Military genius of the highest distinction
whose military strategy is second to none save
Alexander. Whose courage is held in reverence,
whose cradle at infancy was kept in a cave
from strong invading imperialist French forces.
He gave up an empire so vast at Waterloo;
A threat to the memories of his victories past.

Mighty Napoleon, who at Austerlitz excelled,
you did on the beautiful older Josephine cast
your loving eyes, which were hypnotized with passion,
yet focused still on so lofty an ambition.
Not even your love for her would rival your love
for world conquest, for which you assiduously strove.

Keep Smiling

It is not the mansion tall and majestic
With trees and courtyard of even lawn
Nor the helpers at one’s beck and call
Do help soften one’s fears and worries
But a smile borne of contentment does
Keep smiling always; come what may.

The wealth accumulated so assiduously
Might steal your quiet good nights’ sleep
The tranquil hours of night and dreams
For hoarding sure; breeds fear of losing
To sleep so soundly and to wake up fit
Keep smiling always; come what may.

It is far better to live in a contended isle
Far away from the maddening luxuries
Escaping staring attentions which hurt
Dodging the sufferings that ever haunt
Accepting the luck the way it is coming
Keep smiling always; come what may.

Nuptials Carved By Our Parents

Those lovely little precious moments
Moments we shared and treasured like two lovely doves
Doves that had fallen freshly in love
Love which had been nurtured over a long period of time

Time which had been kept assiduously by our bountiful parents
Parents who had been looking forward to this Nuptials
Nuptials planned since our conception in their wombs
Wombs that had born and bred other siblings

Siblings who had failed to grant them their heart desires
Desires they expect that we shall grant under any circumstance
Circumstances which we can no more bear and tolerate
Tolerate and bear circumstances like their constant nagging

Naggings which are gradually becoming a nuisance to our ears
Ears that have had to put up with these nonsensical demands
Demands which we are slowly hearkening to
To make them happy and satisfy their bitter souls

Souls that have not rested in many years
Years that have seen them hope to make this combination
Combination of their seeds in order to continue the family friendship bond

Winter

The depth of winter hails the mournful song of the currawongs as they exchange a sorrowful lament with one another. The chilled evening air echoes with their call, causing a melancholy dirge to settle within the soul. The white tipped wings and grey streaks on their bodies are reminiscent of the ever present hoary that portrays Winters settlement across the landscape.

His stout crop of hair, once satin, now, what is left are small prickles of grey. The lined, weather beaten face etched with a pallor of silver slate casts its gaze across the numb, frosty country. His eyes carry an intense, glassy glare as they scan the Western sky. Slivers of the setting sun attempt to penetrate the altostatus that enclose the land under the icy fist of winters rule.

The man appears frozen, unable or unwilling to move, like a statue of a stoic savant or relic from ancient times. Winter, he has lived through many, with the march of time each Winter seems to compress the cold through to the marrow of his bones. He scans the sky, assiduously searching for a sign that Spring is on the march, ready to lift the frigid Winter mantle and dispense with the cold. For he knows that just as Yahweh has set the seasons, brighter days are on the horizon and without wishing time away he yearns for the warmth and comfort of brighter days ahead.

The Odious Oyster

There are few foods in this world that I hate
But there is one gnarly and nasty invertebrate
Against which I most assiduously discriminate
And I absolutely can not in any way tolerate

If forced to eat it I would surely asphyxiate
If compelled to consume, I would first self-immolate
Let me be clear for I don't want to obfuscate
If told to ingest it I would violently retaliate

The oyster is something that won't grace my plate
That bilious bivalve should be banished as bait
That odious oyster is fetid incarnate
I can honestly say it's the worst thing I've ate
