Reach for the light
arcing over stars bright
Once attained
not to stain
Ease it on home
brighten the night

There’s a peace that whispers soft
when I step beneath the open sky,
trees stretching in green prayer,
branches swaying like the hands
of a thousand saints, lifting their weight
toward something higher.
In moments when I’m alone,
that wide sky pulls me in close—
a blue blanket tucked around shoulders
on a night lit only by stars.
Crickets keep time, their gentle song
finding rhythm with my heart.
I think of the quiet crack of a baseball bat,
the ball arcing high, a promise carried on the wind,
a flight so clear it feels like love.
In a way, it's the same—a swing of hope,
the reach for connection,
the leap toward something more.
And isn’t that like a prayer, too?
Those small moments when I feel Him,
like sunlight slipping through autumn leaves,
or in the crisp warmth of pajamas fresh from the line,
or the sacred stillness of a Sunday afternoon.
Nature wraps around me like comfort,
reminding me I am never truly alone,
even when no one’s near—
because in each bird’s song, each gust of wind,
each blade of grass bending beneath my feet,
there is something holy, something here.

A whispered shhh hung in the air
Tall grass rustled nearby
A slight sniffy, snorty snout sound
Preceded the crinkly crunch of dry grass
Sweat slithered across my brow
A large head appeared
Violently shaking
Hanging jowls jousting
Saliva arcing aimlessly
A growl ruffling the air
We ran
Screams scurrying ahead
Saliva spewing demon behind
Fear fueled our flight
Her hand thinly slipping from mine
She fell
The demon approached
We heard her
Breathlessly shriek
“DAD
….CALL THE DOG”

My partner called out cars she sent
as we stood at opposite ends
of the work zone, and when
hers had passed, I called out mine
sending them along a narrow passage.
We found a common language
to communicate, and we made
small talk when things were slow.
The construction crew struggled
to settle each fresh coat of asphalt
over a moist bed of clay
of a two-lane in northeast Nebraska
arcing and curving over hills and valleys
between two unincorporated areas.
Black angus cows grazed
on a grassy hill, coincidental beauty found
in another time and place,
and a bull bellowed
to declare the spread his own.
After work my partner and I stood
outside our rooms at the hotel.
She talked about her husband
and I talked about a librarian
who read my poems.
While we spoke about our
lives back home, a light in the lot
shone a distant star.

As I lie neath an early summertide planets-aligning
eve of a celebration,
silver shooting star's sparkle above the endless
bridge of the cosmos-
a bridge where those who have passed from
earth before us stride.
Some of them children who run and shout in
astral play,
young and older couples with snowy crowns,
people of all races, all ages,
in reuniting bliss with loved ones.
Friends from their past,
and pets with eyes of welcome.
Thousands of angels as bright as many
Milky Ways on gold-gleamed chariots aflame
with newly parted souls,
escorting them to the entrance of the
starry-blessed bridge to begin their heavenly
journey walks.
I dreamt in God's colors in rainbows arcing
in glorious spectrums,
synchronizing with music of hereafter
coursing in my elder veins,
delighting my psyche.
And I recall in deepest sleep,
memories of the goodness of many
strangers,
so pure and unbenighted. ~

To be the ones to see that storm
Rage across the jungle
And witness the light arcing in flames
From sky to horizon
To feel the imminent thunder rumble
To the pads of your toes.
How close will it come?
At first it was a thin black smoke
Spilling across the sky towards us
But now it's coming on, and on.
It can take half a day to arrive
Or it can roll like a spirit in half an hour
The power of forked lightning
Sparks from peak to peak
Burns the ozone and sets your feet tingling
And the hairs on the nape of your neck.
The sudden deluge of rain
Is so strong on the sand
We pick up our packs from the side of the lake
And ran to the hut.
Contemptible humans! I’m not done with you yet!

He’s a guy, he’s just a guy
He will not look away
He will look you in the eye
He will fart
It will stink
Blow his nose
Spit in the sink
Cuz he’s a guy, just a guy
He will help ya change a flat
Tell ya when you’re gettin’ fat
He will take two twisted wires
And with a pair of pliers
Fix that toy that made you cry
Yes!! He’s that guy
If he’s really lucky
He’ll meet a damsel cute and plucky
And when people ask her “why”
She’ll reply:
“cuz he’s my guy!”
So all you guys in waiting
Beware the traps that they are baiting
For all “fishermen” believe
It’s not the catch it’s the retrieve
Just remember they’re are women
Who still enjoy naked swimmin’
And a walk along the beach
Her guys hand in easy reach
But, he will stop to take a pee
Arcing it into the sea
Then forget to zip his fly
Cuz ….HE’S A GUY

Thus
They flee
Absconding
In guiltless flight
On fattened feathers
A pointed arrowhead
Guided by some hidden force
Returning to their beginnings
Arcing slowly over icy peaks
Circling the history of their valley

By the river in the silent morning sat a particular stone,
Among many, but it stood alone.
The little stone had a plan,
It wanted to cross the river’s span
With all the others, it jumped with its unique stride
And after starting, it joined the tide
With every toss, a leap of faith,
In the dance of the river, the skip’s wraith.
Why was this stone the chosen one?
Its tale skips under the golden sun.
Could it make it to the depth’s mystery?
That’s only a tale of the bridge’s history.
The longer it took, the more rounds passed.
It was proving its worth, steadfast to the last.
It had to make it; the end was near,
With each bouncing stride, it conquered fear.
The skipping stone told its stories,
Of arcing flights and watery glories.
After everything, the stone went through,
It reached the end, its journey true.
All the bridges crossed, and it sunk through the water’s kiss,
It’s skipping legacy, a moment of bliss.
This journey was it, the stone’s test.
It made it to its final rest.

The former MVP pawned his very last ring
like the others, it had begun to sting
Bittersweet memories of his storied swing
that for a decade had made him King
He'd hit home runs in every park
high-arcing 'rainbows' his pet trademark
Now resting quietly in a subway dark
he rattles his cup, his rags pock-marked

dark bone-chilling wilderness chant
From horizon rising from a distant North
the summer smiled at the arcing sand dunes
in the lonely desert, echoed by a sandy splash
oasis-flowered waters from a celestial spring
Watered destiny as it grew in her youthfulness
blossoming, while fate plays her major cast
"The villain" of the drama called Life
a brief flutter in life's journey
a memorable one beckons at every step and at every stop
The miles covered are little when compared to
Mirages of success shown like dark seas.
desolation in low spaces
Fear tripling down like little mist.
humanity wandering to infinity
chaos playing the drums for a dance
sanity lost sailing into destination unknown

Three Point Shot
You reach the line, an almost perfect semicircle, racing from one side of the court to the other, avoiding the hoop In a soft wide arc, Your shoes biting deep into the floor, As you come to a halt, Announcing it to the world with a short, piercing squeak Tearing through the atmosphere, to the stands With the ball nestled in your hands, just yearning to take flight, You rise, knowing that your defenders can’t reach you Everything but the ball and hoop a distant memory Your hands travel through the same motions you know so well, Knowing, even before the ball leaves your grasp, you’ve already won, This time You finally release the ball, with a quick, decisive snap of the wrist Sending it arcing through the air with pinpoint accuracy, Racing towards the net
Silence, and then, swish
Crisp, clear as a spring morning
Play continues on

Swish
Crisp and clean as a clear spring morning
The ball drops through the net, as the net snaps upwards
You breathe a sigh of relief and relax,
As play continues on
